General

  • Set in rural Wales with spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons
  • A 15-minute drive from outdoor activity centres in Brecon
  • Horse riding centre, farm park, shows, workshops, café and indoor play

Farmyard fun is the firm order of the day at Cantref Campsite, a family-friendly place three miles from Brecon town centre and surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Stay here and you’ll not just get to meet the friendly animals: trot next door to the kids’ farm park to get hands on. Shows and workshops run every half-hour throughout the the day, with antics including pet handling, bottle feeding lambs, tractor and trailer rides and madcap pig races. (Bargain hunters, take note: families staying at Cantref get two days' farm park entry for the price of one).

Got a particular soft spot for the horses? You’re in the right place – the site’s also got a horse riding and pony trekking centre, catering for all abilities from baffled beginner to experienced horse handlers.

Now, it does occasionally rain in Wales, so the clever farm folk have installed a pleasingly spacious and heated indoor play area at the farm park in case the outdoor rides are too damp. For eats, Cantref Campsite's farmhouse café serves light lunchtime snacks, cakes and homemade specials and there are a couple of country pubs within a 10-minute drive.

Great staff and good site08/11/2019

The site was really well presented and clean. The staff were lovely and extremely accommodating. The food in the café was lovely and my son really enjoyed the Adventure Farm Park. Great views across to Pen Y Fan. I would visit again, the dislikes are more as a message to the owners.

    Disliked:

The showers were really clean when we arrived (we were the only people on site) but the design (no water barrier or real slope to a small drain) meant no matter how much I tried the water went everywhere (including under a floor to ceiling partition into the toilet). The pitches are level but only once you go down a small grassy slope, which was challenging to drive back up with wet grass.

    Disliked:

Pitch and shower block. This site rated itself as 4 star luxury with a new shower block with level pitches. Their idea of 4 star luxury differs greatly from mine. The level pitch was set up by the one eyed scrumpy drinking toilet cleaner. The campervan could only be parked one way, which led to a night of me rolling onto the other half squashed against the side of the van. The 'new' shower block stank of urine and had an abundance of mud in the shower cubicles.

The pitches were nicely organized and clean. The view was absolutely amazing, especially for the price.
I was only there for the night so I cannot comment on the vast daytime riding activities.

    Disliked:

The checkin times were confusing , the profile said checking is between 4pm and any time, I said I would come at seven, arrived half an hour earlier and they closed right after I arrived.

Poor customer service. Received no apology for the fire pit we ordered and paid for didn't arrive, lights on the campsite didn't work, no emergency number was given or any other information, lights for the walkway by the toilets and washing up area didn't work. Small pitches, bench placed on the the parking space for my pitch, main sign for the layout of the campsite is upside down. Wouldn't recommend to anyone

Cantref is a lovely, small, secure site which was fantastic for our young children to play with other children whilst staying in sight. The facilities were easily accessible and due to its small size, always available. The pitches provided gorgeous views of the Brecon Beacons.
The access to the farm park for the whole of the stay is excellent value for money and well worth it!

    Disliked:

Some of the pitches are pretty small and not as easy to access the tent from. We had pitch 12 which was one of the smallest pitches on a very steep bank which did become very muddy and slippy following some rain.
When we first arrived the site was very full (bank holiday weekend) and the tent next to ours was pitched very close to our pitch. They were only there for the one night and so this did not cause a problem but may have been more of a nuisance if they were there for the duration of our stay.
The showers/toilets are located near the exit from the farm park and were also used by the public so by the time the park closed each day were quite dirty however they were cleaned mid evening each day.

Lovely location, peaceful site, friendly campers and atmosphere around us. The pitches are small but this was fine for our large group. It was also just the right size to let our children enjoy the outdoors independently but not out of our sight. The farm on site was also fun for the children which we went to on our last day.

    Disliked:

Pitches are very close so there wasnt much room directly outside the tent.

Pitches were perfect with an incredible view! Very clean and parking was right next to the pitches so made setting up and packing away super easy! Great value for money when it comes to the pitches with the farm inclusion! Water access was plenty available throughout in pitch area also has a wide space behind the pitch area for the children to run around and play games! Toilet, shower and dishwashing area are very close to the pitch area which was handy with a small child! Fantastic stay and we are already planning on when we go back!
The adventure farm was amazing! The staff are all super friendly and nice and what’s there is incredible! Brilliant indoor soft play area, pony rides and loads of activities to do throughout the day. My daughters favourite was pig racing! The food was great quality and the price was brilliant too! I think display wise they have the best beans on toast I have ever seen (wish I ordered that when it came out for someone else). Can’t wait to go back.

    Disliked:

The men’s toilet has only 1 cubicle which made it a little difficult at times when there was a queue (rare but did happen) to take my daughter there.

Local attractions

Views out over the surrounding mountains and valleys will no doubt tip you off that there are plenty of options for mountain biking and hill walking nearby. Several biking and hiking routes start near the site, with heaps more around the rest of the Brecon Beacons National Park (including five mountain bike centres and 14 trails ranging from beginner to expert).

If you’re up for other outdoorsy activities, activity centres in Brecon (15 minutes’ drive) can hook you up with days of canoeing, caving, climbing and sailing. For a real challenge, get set to scale Pen y Fan – south Wales’s highest peak is 20 minutes away (handily, the easiest route up is also the most convenient here – no need to let on to the folk back home.)

For something a little gentler, take your binoculars to Craig Cerrig-Gleisiad or Talybont Reservoir (both about 20 minutes) for some excellent birdwatching, or crack on to Crickhowell Castle (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Brecon Mountain Railway (8.7 miles)

  • National Showcaves of Wales (14.8 miles)
