The Sleeping Shepherd: The view

General

  • Cosy adults-only shepherd's hut 15 minutes' walk from Manorbier
  • A 10-minute drive from Tenby and 20 from Barafundle Bay
  • Sea views from the private deck; direct access to the coast path

If this is what real-life shepherding is like, then it’d be a miracle if you got to the end of your hols without jacking it all in and signing up for a crash course in sheep keeping.

The Sleeping Shepherd lifestyle (admittedly unlikely to be one that bears much resemblance to full-time animal husbandry…) is a fine one indeed, mainly involving roaming around a particularly pretty part of Pembrokeshire, chilling out on your private deck sipping wine with a sea view, and cosying up in a comfy handcrafted hut for peaceful slumbers.

This peaceful little glamping site is 15 minutes’ stroll from the coastal village of Manorbier, where there’s a small supermarket, a pub and a tearoom. Folk travelling without a car can get here easily from the station 20 minutes’ amble away, and then continue local explorations by bus or with wanders on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which can be accessed on a direct footpath from the site.

Walks on the coast path are highly recommended of course, as are outings to some of the area’s stunning beaches (Barafundle Bay, a frequent entrant on ‘world’s best beach’ lists, is 20 minutes away by car). But perhaps even more highly recommended are lengthy periods of hanging out on your deck, gazing out at the spectacular views over Manorbier Bay towards St Govan’s Head.

A kettle, toaster and hob are in your hut so you can create some breakfast to go with the view, as is a fridge to keep the wine chilled (and the bangers, if you’re planning a barbie…).

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

Bookings must not be for more than 10 consecutive nights.

We loved the sleeping Shepard. The host was welcoming and full of useful information about good places to go when we arrived. The campsite it’s self was lovely and quite for the middle of august, and from the hut we had a lovely view of the Bay.
The outdoor bath was a highlight at the hut, it felt so refreshing and relaxing.
Also having a dog with us it was nice to know We had our own fenced gated area around the hut so we could leave the doors open and the dog could play on the grass.

I really enjoyed my stay at the sleeping shepherd. Location is great with lovely views, toilet/ shower is only a few steps away and there is a local shop, cafe and pub within walking distance with paths clearly marked through the field. The hut was pretty, clean and nicely presented with all the items you need. Joe gave a warm welcome when I arrived on site and set up the bbq and provided coals. It was a great base to explore the area, coastal paths are clearly marked and the likes of tenby and barafundle bay are in close driving distance if you are not looking for long walks. Overall exactly the relaxing break I was looking for, Joe was contactable and happily helped point me in the directions of things to do and the hut was lovely. Plus a bath to watch the stars 😊 would definitely visit again

Lovely peaceful location with views over the bay. The bed was very comfortable. Cooking facilities are basic but sufficient for a short stay. The campsite toilets and shower are also fairly basic but kept spotlessly clean.

There is a fantastic, uncrowded cove only a short walk away though the fields provided you are fit enough for the 200 odd steps and a scrmable over some rocks at the bottom. There is also easy access to the coast path for some spectacular walks. The village stores, pub and main Manorbier beach are also only a short walk away.

Everything about our stay was fabulous. The shepherds hut was so well equipped, everything you could need was catered for and the pack of Welsh cakes on arrival was very nice too. Joe couldn’t have been more helpful. The site was the most tranquil we’ve ever stayed on. No road noise just birds chirping, heavenly. The view of the sea from the sun deck was lovely and at night the stars just shone as no light pollution. We would definitely go back. Tenby and surrounding areas are truly beautiful. We had such a lovely stay. Highly recommend.

    Disliked:

Having booked on trust pilot rather than direct we struggled to find the site as it’s call High Hill Farm and we were looking for a sign for the sleeping shepherd but a quick call to Joe soon sorted that.

Fabulous Hut with everything you need for a relaxing break. We had amazing weather for September so the views were spectacular looking out to sea from the deck. Friendly little site and well maintained. Great for the dog as has a small fenced area and a field in front for a morning run. Close to a well stocked shop and pretty little beach and castle. The outdoor bath was very special and a great added bonus. Perfect spot to explore the coast- especially recommend Freshwater West beach and Cafe Mor :-) Definitely recommend 10/10!

The dog didn't like the flies in the Hut! So a fly screen would have been good!

Local attractions

No one would judge you at all if you spent your entire break on Pembrokeshire’s gorgeous beaches – there are plenty of them to pick from. Start at your local, Manorbier beach (25 minutes’ walk), or stroll to Skrinkle Haven (half an hour) before continuing along the coast path to Church Doors Cove and the sea caves at Lydstep.

Jaunts further afield might take you to the resorts of Tenby (10 minutes) and Saundersfoot (15 minutes) for boat trips and some well-reviewed restaurants, or west to gorgeous Barafundle (20 minutes), Bosherston (25 minutes) for a walk past the lily ponds to the beach, or Freshwater West (25 minutes) for surfing and cracking lobster rolls from famed Café Môr.

If there’s another thing that Pembrokeshire’s famed for, it’s castles… there’s one in Manorbier, and a couple of other fine examples in Carew Castle and Pembroke Castle (both 15 minutes). And although you’ve not brought kids along, who’s to say you can’t have a day out at Oakwood Theme Park (25 minutes) or cooing over the creatures at Manor Wildlife Park (10 minutes)?

Must see

  • Pembroke Castle (5.9 miles)
  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (7.3 miles)
  • Pembrey Country Park (20.6 miles)

  • Tudor Merchant's House (4.1 miles)
