Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site: Overlooking Porthsele beach

General

  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • On-site coffee hut open daily and pizza served in school holidays

Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas.

You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you).

The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele.

Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. This is also the spot for dinner with a view – pizzas are served above the beach on certain days during school holidays.

Sea views & access to the beach, this is what makes Pencarnan site special. Unfortunately during our stay the site had only just opened for the season and was still under covid restrictions so toilets and facilities weren’t open so I can’t comment on these. Whilst on our stay in the Rhosson View field there was a lot of farm equipment mess that obviously hadn’t been dealt with yet but I am sure it will be cleared soon.

The touring fields were all grass and there were some level pitches with good hook ups. Water and waste points in the middle.

Central area with the facilities looked to have been upgraded this year but were open yet but looked fine.

    Disliked:

The dog tax! We had to pay £4 per dog for our stay but there was no facilities for the dogs, no dog poo bins and in fact there was fair amount of dog poo around the site from the free running farm dogs. There’s no justification for charging for the dogs in these circumstances.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, and we're glad you enjoyed your stay on the whole. Thank you for your feedback regarding our facilities for dogs, we are always looking for things we can do to improve and will take that on board. Pencarnan is a working farm and there will always be a certain amount of evidence of this around the site, but we will look at this too.

Quiet site in a great location. Straight onto beach and Pembrokeshire coastal path . Pleasant management team

    Disliked:

Pitches were really wet and although we didn’t need towing in and out most others did. Be prepared for some mud as no hard standing due to local rules. Toilets and shower block were cold, quite dirty and very poor for hot water ( maybe partly because of the time of yr though no attempts to compensate by adding a heater of any description etc.....)

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land.

There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months.

Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
