General

  • Bothy in a hidden garden bordered by woodland and a stream
  • Wildlife country in the midst of the Ceredigion countryside
  • Three miles from Lampeter and seven from the Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Everyone, even the cynical, should have a little romance in their lives. Especially if it includes free breakfast (a holiday extra that we have found thaws the icy hearts of the cynical even more than blazing sunsets).

If you possess a cynic as a life partner, direct them to this listing, show them the snap of the Teifi Meadows bothy shepherd’s hut, and tell them that by hook or by crook, you must holiday here. And yes, there is free breakfast. And yes, use the term ‘brownie points’ – or ‘doghouse’ – if you have to.

If you prefer going away armed with tent, tourer or motorhome, Teifi Meadows should also warm the cockles of your heart, and the battery of your camera. This is wildlife country – look out for red kites overhead – in the midst of the greenery of the Ceredigion countryside, and close to the walks, dolphin-spotting and beaches of the Ceredigion coast and Cardigan Bay.

National Trust sites, River Teifi fishing and canoeing, mountain pony trekking, Roman gold mines and blooming great gardens are in the area too: ask your hosts Jane and Julian for their top sightseeing tips.

The bothy at Teifi Meadows is in a hidden garden bordered by woodland and a stream, with loo and shower facilities – fluffy towels included – in the Ty Bach (little house) alongside. Linen, fridge, kitchen utensils, a gas barbecue and indoor woodburning stove are all included.

And yes again, there’s a free breakfast: bothy guests get a breakfast hamper on arrival with free range eggs, scones or cake, and home-produced bacon and sausages. Get the other half to cook it in the morn: it’ll be romantic.

For supper supplies to sort alfresco eats and stargazing, the village of Llanfair Clydogau is about a mile away and has a well-stocked licensed shop as well as a post office selling rod licences if you’re plotting to fish on the Teifi.

Lampeter, about three miles away, has plenty of food shops, independent stores and a farmers’ market, and the pub at Cellan, also three miles away, serves food and Sunday lunches. Sunday pub lunches are romantic too.

Lovely relaxed site with all pitches around perimeter of field leaving the centre free for children and families to play. We enjoyed a few different ball games with other campers, kids of all different ages and parents joining in some good fun together!
Good facilities, nice and close to all pitches, x4 showers, never had to wait for showers.
Swings and Wendy house which our kids loved (age 5 and 7).
Firepits available on request. Bag of logs and kindling £5.
Great location, beautiful surrounding countryside, and lots to see and do in this area. We visited Dollacoulthi gold mines (fab family afternoon). Beaches (New quay, llangrannog, Aberporth) 35-45 mines away.

    Disliked:

    Ground slightly uneven in places.
Had to walk down the road to find the dog an off lead walk as all surrounding fields had sheep/cattle in.
It would be great if an area was cleared for the kids to be able to access the stream.

OK - What we liked was it took us back ... 29/05/2018

OK - What we liked was it took us back 10 years to "camping" days - I am sick of all the policies and rules and regulations a lot of campsites currently put in place - This campsite was NOT like that - pitched up where we wanted, in a formation we wanted, with awnings and event tents and camp fire and everything we needed to make us have an amazing time - none of this £2 for an awning, £3 for a washing line, £1 for a sneeze - just good old fashion field, with electric hookup, decent shower/toilet block and lovely people. Thank you so much !

    Disliked:

Not a lot really - only gripe was the bridge was a little narrow on the entrance and there was quite a lot of Cow Pats around our pitch - apart from that - lovely site !

The location was so peaceful, the owner was very welcoming. The breakfast hamper was great, they went out of their way and did a vegetarian one for us, which was lovely. The accommodation was cute and cosy, had everything we needed. We loved sitting out by the fire on an evening.

    Awesome location.
Lovely owners, hamper on arrival was excellent and very tasty. Cooking facilities more than enough.
Lots to do around local area - owners also own ice cream shop Zukos in Aberaeron.
Fire bowl and kindling were lovely too.

If travelling from Tregaron you will pass through the villages of Llandewi Brefi and Llanfair Clydogau. The campsite driveway will be on your left, approximately half a mile from the village. Teifi Meadows is flanked by two brick and stone gateposts.

Local attractions

Everyone, even the unimaginative, will find something to do in Ceredigion and the Teifi Meadows surroundings, although the choice of what’s on offer may overwhelm dithery types…

Historians of old should start off at the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines less than seven miles from bothy or pitch, the only Roman mines discovered so far in Britain and a deeply groovy place for underground tours.

Also from the National Trust, twelfth century Dinefwr Castle and its eighteenth century landscaped park lies high on a hill above the River Tywi near Llandeilo; and Llanerchaeron house, estate and walled gardens gives a glimpse into how the Welsh gentry lived in the eighteenth century.

The Trust manages a couple of beaches hereabouts, magnificent Mynt, regarded as one of the best hidden beaches in Europe, and Penbryn, which James Bond fans might recognise from scenes in Die Another Day.

Both are on the Ceredigion Coast Path, so don your boots for romantic walks: it’s 11.7 miles to Cardigan from Mynt, and a much more strollable 1.7 miles from Penbryn to Llangrannog.

The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is a 6.5 mile walk from New Quay and we thoroughly recommend a day in both: Aberaeron for another spectacular beach, and New Quay for dolphin-spotting boat trips, day-long fishing trips and the only bee farm in Wales.

Further along the coast in Aberystwyth, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway up to the smashing falls of Devil's Bridge.

Inland – we did say there was a lot to see – the landscape of Elan Valley (‘the Welsh Lake District’) is filled with stunning scenery to see by bike along the Elan Valley Trail; hire your own wheels at the visitor centre.

A tad too sedate? Go mountain biking instead at Bwlch Nant yr Arian or Brechfa Forest, both home to many tumultuous trails.
