General

  • Peaceful site next to the river Taf in rural Pembrokeshire
  • Close to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Preseli Hills
  • Woodland walks and friendly farm animals on site

Pembrokeshire’s perhaps most famed for its stunning coastline – that’s the feature that gave it the country’s only coastal national park, after all. Inland’s definitely worth a bit of exploration too though, especially if you’ve bagged a spot at Wellstone Country Camping.

A stay here is a proper rural escape – the peaceful South Wales site between Tegryn and Llanfyrnach is on the banks of the Taf river, with woodland and riverside walks around the grounds and corners where those with the appropriate licence can dangle a rod in the waters. Kites and kingfishers are among the natural residents you may spot as you wander or relax around the place, and there’s a little farm park where you can hang out with furry friends including bunnies, goats and chickens.

This is a wifi-free site, so you’ll need to step away from the gadgets and find more traditional entertainment. Free-roaming kids and dogs (and grownups too, of course) have plenty of space for games, barbecues and campfires, and there are heaps of family-friendly days out nearby (beaches, horse riding, theme parks, a waterpark – the list goes on…)

Facilities on site are fairly basic but well kept, including a modern, heated toilet and shower block, and a washing-up area. A couple of pubs are within a few minutes’ drive if you fancy having dinner cooked for you.

Wonderful stay at Wellstone camping 06/09/2018

People on site were very friendly, the yurt was really cosy and clean. You're so close to the stream that you can hear it in the evening and it's wonderful.
The yurt also had kindling, logs and fire-starters provided at no extra cost. You really don't need to bring cooking equipment as they have thought of everything. There were evening colouring books for our 4 year old.

    Disliked:

Not the sites fault but our sat nav took us off road and through a farmers gate. One evening we found the path blocked and had to reverse and find an alternative route. Unsure if this was done on purpose or if it was just bad luck. I'd stick to the road route just to avoid it though.

Facilities and safety were a let down. 28/08/2018

We stayed for 3 nights in badger Yurt (1 of 2 Yurts) and found the campsite clean and peaceful. The Yurt was clean and comfortable and they provided a travel cot for our toddler. The lady taking care of the site and guests was friendly and welcoming and dealt quickly with concerns raised. The kitchen shed had everything you needed to cook meals for a family, kettle, tea and coffee. As the campsite is small, we didn't feel like any of the other guests were on top of us and there were no problems with noise.

    Disliked:

The facilities for showering and going to the loo were on a par with family festival camping; a bit smelly and cold, hot cold showers, paper towels ran out, the loo roll ran out and the drain was blocked on one occasion meaning my first shower was spent with water from the toilet end of the cubicle swimming around my feet. The shower and toilet block is basically a very good shed with no natural light, upvc doors with locks that were stiff probably due to the doors sagging very slightly on the hinges. I met another family that were going to the toilets in pairs to avoid being locked in.

We had to descend some rustic wooden steps to our pitch that were extremely slippy in the wet. The wooden area around the pitch was also very slippy and we all slipped despite being careful in walking shoes. I came off worst when carrying my toddler.

At night, the campsite is completely unlit and the eco lamps we were provided with in the Yurt were not sufficient to safely get us to the loo. I was glad to have brought some of my camping gear for me and the kids in the night to resolve this.

    Rustic feel to the site.

    Disliked:

No freezer to replenish ice packs. Wasted food because of this. Toilet doors do not unlock easilyour resulting in panicked children, also not cleaned regularly enough. Cars cannot be driven to pitch to unload or pack up. This make it difficult in wet weather. Wood provided (£3.50) for fires was wet so useless! Unfriendly dogs allowed on site.

From the manager...

We do have a large freezer for customers to use and is available 24/7
Toilet doors open and shut easily if children are unable to open them then perhaps they should have been accompanied by an adult
There is a large trolley for customers to use to unpack and pack up
We do not allow cars on site for children's safety
All dogs are required to be kept on a lead at All times
The wood has been dried for at least 3 years and if the customers leave out in the rain they can always ask to swap for another bag
Customers are able to purchase wood from local shops in the village if they prefer.
Toilets are regularly cleaned as are the free showers, guests are requested to remove out door foot ware in the showers to help prevent muddy floors
As mentioned in previous reviews we are always happy to help our guests in anyway we can, I wish you had mentioned it to us while you were here

Spotlessly clean toilets and free hot showers which we never queued for. Fire pits & reasonably priced wood available . Peter, Thelma and caretaker Jo are very friendly & couldn't have been more accommodating, providing maps to borrow ,freezer blocks, freshly laid eggs & local knowledge. Lovely location for walks , beaches a short drive away . Local butchers & health store in Crymych .Supermarket in Cardigan ( 20mins) Fantastic value for money. Would recommend this place to anyone looking to get away from it all!

The campsite is small and quiet with a small river running through it which was great for the kids to explore. It is was very shallow, so no worries about our 6 year getting in it for a paddle. The animals were also a big hit with the kids. There is virtually no noise from roads or anything other than an occasional car. Also there was very little light pollution and my husband got up in the middle of the night and said the stars were amazing. The owners were very friendly and helpful--they even loaned us some spare buckets and spades for the beach. The showers and toilets were very clean. Newport was lovely and the beaches were great. Newcastle is worth a look too. I wish we'd had longer to stay at this little gem. I'd love to come back sometime.

    Disliked:

    I only booked for 3 nights--wished we'd stayed a week.

Local attractions

Between the site and the coast (about a 15-minute drive) are the Preseli Hills, a fab area for a walk, mountain bike ride or a horse/pony trek organised by one of the local stables. It’s also an intriguing area on a historic front, for there are many ancient wonders lying around the area: Castell Henllys Iron Age site and the Pentre Ifan Bronze Age burial chamber are both about 25 minutes away.

If you do fancy heading for the coast, there are splendid beaches in all directions – head north to Newport Sands or south to Pendine; both are about half an hour away. For coastal activities, take a long walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path or head to Cardigan (25 minutes) for coasteering, kayaking, rafting and the like. The town's Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park is worth a look for sightings of seals and dolphins.

This is a fab area for family-oriented days out too: Oakwood theme park, Blue Lagoon waterpark and Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo are all within a 40-minute drive.
