Wide and grassy pitches

General

  • Clifftop site a three-minute walk to the pub and five to the beach
  • 10 minutes’ drive to Tenby for its castle, harbour and boat trips
  • 10 minutes from Heatherton and 30 from Oakwood

Penally Court Farm... a clifftop cracker.

Sandy beaches, castles, coastal walks with spectacular views, colourful harbour towns... Pembrokeshire needs little introduction. But this little bit of it, in Penally just above Tenby, deserves more than introducing though: ideally via fanfares, fireworks, a parade...

But none of the above is needed on this peaceful family-run site. In lush green fields on the cliffs overlooking Tenby, it concentrates on simple, well-maintained facilities that don’t get in between you and the surrounds. You can park up where you stay, cook up feasts alfresco on barbecues, or take a three-minute stroll to a pub with grub in Penally. The village also has a shop for stocking up on basics; bigger stores and supermarkets are under 10 minutes' drive away in Tenby.

Not that you’d only visit Tenby for baby wipes and beef burgers... it’s a handsome harbour town with pastel-hued houses, a castle, a fort (on an island) and lots of spots for eats and treats. And a beach. The 20-minute walk into town is a terrific way to introduce yourselves to the area, or you could just run into the sea (five minutes’ walk from the site).

Tenby and surrounding area is lovely

    Disliked:

    No level pitches
24 hour noise from main road alongside .. so close their speed in the night rocked the van. Like being parked on the hard shoulder of the A1. Next to the road is the railway line and if your really unlucky the army firing range will be operational. Not a tranquil site
Beach is not 5 mins away .. even Mo Farrar wouldn’t do it in less than 20mins
No wash up facilities and was told to use the wash basin in the toilet and get hot water from the showers!!!!
    No local information available
    Website is totally misleading

Proximity to Tenby, south beach, coast path and Penally village, which has a nice pub. The walk into Tenby along the beach is lovely but much longer than the website claims (45 minutes 2.1 miles).

    Disliked:

The site is bounded by the main road through the village and the A4139 with traffic noise 24 hours a day. Just beyond the A road is a railway line (in use 6am -11pm) and immediately beyond that an army live fire rifle range. Beyond this some of the higher pitches can glimpse the sea. Also close by is Penally army camp and sewage works.
The website is generally misleading with inaccurate distances, descriptions and stock photos - only 2 images that show the site itself.
The site only has a short stretch of tarmacked road at the entrance and the rest is grass. It quickly turns to mud with a little rain, with cars getting stuck on the slope up to the entrance. The pitches are on a slope, at the maximum you can level a caravan on and are ill defined. The 2 facilities blocks are old and tired with insufficient number of toilets when the site is full. They are clean and the showers are free. 4 new wet rooms have been added which helps slightly. However, they are lethal at night with 4 unlit steps outside(light broken or turned off and no other lighting on the site) and no natural light or ventilation inside. The washing up facilities consists of one belfast sink with no hot water, plug or drainer for the whole site. There is no laundry, local information, play area, shop etc. Drinking water is not marked. The hook ups are mostly only 6 amp (again not mentioned on the website) other than the couple the site manager has modified himself. There is free wifi, if you are close enough to ariel at the entrance and can find the single postcard with log in details stuck in the window of the site managers caravan.

The staff are what really spoil this site. The site manager cruises round the site in a 4x4 glaring at customers and shouting at any he thinks have broken his arbitrary rules which aren't displayed anywhere. He walked onto our pitch and started messing with our property, whilst we were there, without talking to us. When I asked if I could help him he immediately started threatening to throw us off the site. This was repeated on a second occasion when he threatened to get the owner down with his tractor and drag our caravan off the site. We also witnessed confrontations between him and other guests. Speaking to people with seasonal pitches on the site they avoid talking to the manager for this reason. There was also a pair of odd job men who set up a radio blaring music on the wall at the back of our pitch about 4 foot from our caravan and proceeded to dig a hole whilst we were having breakfast, without speaking to us. The hole and numerous others dug in a similar fashion around the site were left open and unprotected overnight on an unlit site. This was repeated over the next two days, while posts were placed, then concreted in the holes. On one the battered tractor and trailer they were using for this work began to roll way down the hill towards other caravans due to a faulty or unapplied hand brake and an accident was only avoided by the quick actions of one of the staff.

There are lots of other sites in the area most of which will be better or cheaper and don't involve being threatened. I would stay elsewhere next time.

Local attractions

Tenby is a port of call for people wanting more than a paddle on the sea: boat trips will take you round the cliffs or out to spot the seals (pick a sunset cruise for marriage proposals, or just to be romantic) and to visit Caldey Island, a rocky nugget of peace, nature and history offshore where monks have been living since the sixth century (not the same ones, but of course).

To hit the beach, popular Saundersfoot and Pendine are 15 and 30 minutes' drive away, while surfers head for the big waves at Broad Haven and Newgale (40 and 50 minutes). The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is 186 miles long, but don’t feel you have to do it in a day; marked trails along the cliffs give you cracking views and plenty of opps for nature spotting everywhere you go. (A popular short stretch is the eight-miler from Tenby to the castle at Manorbier. And the pub.)

Also in the area, Heatherton World of Adventures (10 minutes) gets you zipping through the trees, climbing ropes and driving go-karts; Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour) has rides to thrill and spill your drinks over, and at Folly Farm (20 minutes), you can combine a traditional fairground jolly with meeting farm animals and exotic beasts.

Must see

  • Pembroke Castle (8.4 miles)
  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (9.6 miles)
  • Pembrey Country Park (18.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Tudor Merchant's House (1.5 miles)
  • Stackpole Estate (9.0 miles)
