General

  • Set in the grounds of an old manor house
  • Three miles from Narberth and 10 minutes' drive from Oakwood
  • Modern facilities, heated pool, amusement centre and family pub

Think 18th-century manor house and the words ‘value for money’ may not be the first to spring to mind. But Grondre Holiday Park three miles from Narberth has cleverly combined the two - huzzah.

Set in the grounds of an old manor house, Grondre has the style of old Wales matched with modern, family-friendly facilities and entertainment. There's a stone-walled, beam-ladened amusement hall on site with pool table and arcade games on site for starters, and a heated outdoor pool (open from Whitsun until 31 August - weather permitting), free for guests to use.

Bingo, quiz nights and other evening entertainment are all run in The Stable Inn during high season - the holiday park’s family pub, which has plenty of draughts on tap and proper Welsh grub to eat in or take away.

And if the activities on site aren’t quite enough, Grondre’s Pembrokeshire-Carmarthenshire has easy access to many of the area’s most popular attractions including Oakwood and Folly Farm adventure parks. You just need to decide where to start...

    Disliked:

No disabled toilets in the caravaning area.

Toilets were frequently not available (no hot water or even no water at all), though they were fixed reasonably quickly.

    All pitches are sloping.

Take care exiting the site as fast moving traffic can appear suddenly, coming round a bend on the right.

The grounds were well maintained, showers and toilets were clean and the staff were very friendly.

    Disliked:

The pool and club house were very small, the touring pitches had families who didn't stop swearing with young kids present and made references to drug taking.

Loved this site, staff extremely helpful, shower and toilet blocks were always clean. great atmosphere on site, lots of people enjoying their holiday but still staying respectful to others. only downside was that the pool was closed and we was not informed, my little boy loves swimming and was a little disappointed, although plenty of other things to keep the kids entertained. great location for oakwood, heatherton, folly farm etc.

    Disliked:

    Leaving
shame no service pitches, being next to the water tap on water fight day was a little bit of a pain, but once we joined in it didn't matter so much ha ha.

Local attractions

The little yet lively Welsh-speaking town of Narbeth is just three miles south of Grondre. Pay it a visit to take in the rows of pretty cottages and shops, boutiques and the Creative Café, where kids can decorate their own pottery and admire their efforts afterwards over a cupcake.

If the pool at Grondre isn’t sufficient for your water baby, head for Blue Lagoon Waterpark, which is just over a 10-minute drive south-west. Open all year round, big kids can have an aqua adventure as they brave the flumes, battle the wild waves, and give it their best on the inflatable ‘Eliminator’ (available at limited times), while kids can explore Nippers Cove…you can relax in the in- and outdoor hot tubs too.

If you’ve still got excitable youngsters with energy to burn, Oakwood Theme Park at Canaston Bridge is just a mile or so further south from Blue Lagoon. Take the troops here for rollercoasters, gold panning, 3D experiences, miniature golf and a trip to Neverland among loads more.

If it’s the seaside that’s calling, Saundersfoot is on the coast 11 miles southward (just over half an hour in the car), while the beach at Amroth is slightly closer (around nine miles, 20 minutes) and the popular resort of Tenby is half an hour’s drive in the same direction.

The half a mile expanse of flat sandy beach at Amroth is perfect for beach games (just check the tide times before travelling), while rockpoolers can head to the western end armed with their net and eagle eye to spy some natural goodies.

Tenby, with its Norman heritage to impress history buffs, fab beaches for sun worshippers, boat trips to Caldey Island for the explorers, shops for the moochers, and a whole load of cafés, pubs and restaurants for those ruled by their stomach, will entertain everyone.

Head north for about 40 minutes (18 miles) for a day trip cycling, walking and picnicking at the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park too. Don’t worry if you don’t manage to cover all the hundreds of miles of public footpaths and bridleways around the park: you can always come back...

Must see
