General

  • Private streamside pitches in a secluded Welsh valley
  • Close to the coast and Skomer Island
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; breakfasts and dinners available

What a super little site is Slate Mill Lodge, in a secluded Welsh valley with plenty of privacy for pitching up.

Birdwatchers and nature fans – this Pembrokeshire coast park is for you, as it's near the birsdspotting haven of Skomer Island and within a short drive of the wildlife-laden coastal path to regard puffins, spring and summer wildflowers, and seals nursing their pups at the end of the summer season. (You'll see all sorts of other species soaring and roaming around the site too.)

Beach buffs – this is also a site for you: Slate Mill Lodge is within a mile as the crow flies of at least four peaceful and pretty Pembrokeshire beaches for plunging into/ onto water: kaykaing, sailing, kitesurfing, diving and windsurfing are all easily accessible from the site. As is fishing, and this is possibly now the place to point out that Slate Mill Lodge allows campfires and barbecues...

Facilities on site include a comfy and modern lodge, where guests can dig into the big breakfasts of a morn or dinner of an evening, all utilising homemade, fresh or free range produce from the Slate Mill Lodge organic garden.

Pitches are along a stream and alongside the lodge, with plenty of privacy from other campers. Among the amenities are a modern facilities block with separate male and female toilets and showers, a washing-up area with hot water, charging facilities and use of fridges and freezers.

The place was awesome! It was not busy at all we had only 1 tent in the field with huge space for kids to play around. The owner was very polite, friendly and very helpful.

The area is well situated with plenty of sightseeing around the area with a short drive or a walk.

I will definitely recommend to my friends and colleagues and we are hoping to come back again!

A small friendly site in a beautiful countryside location by a running stream with wild flowers everywhere. Sadly the owner is selling up, so I really hope that the new owners will retain the lovely environment for camping.

-The owner. Lovely well spoken older man.
-Remote campsite with a small stream running through.
    - Areas where you pitch your tent was mown tidy and flat.
    -Private camping from neighbouring campers.
    -Clean facilities.
    -Hot showers.
    -20 min drive to Lidl/Tesco.
-7 min drive to Dale where you could arrange to go on a boat fishing if you want to.
-10-15 min drive to walk on Pembrokeshire coastal path.

    Disliked:

-Inability to park your vehicle right next to your tent. However, the owner was absolutely willing for us to drive as close as we could get. I just happen to drive a Mondeo and didn't want to rip his ground up as it had been raining a day or two before we arrived.
-I think the price inc elec hookup for campers could be reduced a little. You don't really get anything more for your money ....BUT if I was purely paying for a peaceful weekend, then yes I did get value for money :)

It was easy to find. Once we found reception, we were directed around the site and showed our pitch. Showers had hot water and plenty of sinks for wash up.

    Disliked:

Booked this place due to the description of a peaceful pitch and a pitch that was private. Due to us having dogs it would have been nice to be offered this. However we where put onto a general pitch with lots of other people, where on one pitch was being taken up by us and 2 other motor homes! The site it’s self was rather run down and looked like it could do with some love.

Unusual, with stream runing through middle of camping, individual secluded tent pitch sites. Very nice, special in quiet time.

    Disliked:

Could not park car next to tent, need to carry everything to pitch site, but thanks to that campsite is very charming.

A very well looked after campsite such a shame the owner is currently selling it on! The layout of the campsite is great and allows you to have privacy in your own little area. We had hedges surrounding our pitch! There is a stream that runs through the campsite and we were lucky to have our spot close to it so we woke up in the sound of birds chirping and water flowing. Facilities were also well maintained and there’s a fridge available to use!

    Disliked:

No wifi!? Or maybe we just did not ask. We were lucky that it turned out to be a quiet bank holiday weekend at this campsite when we stayed, otherwise it may have been crowded at the toilet/shower room as there is only two showers and two toilets for ladies.

Wonderful campsite with semi-private areas. All the facilities you'd need, plus chickens and quails. Friendly and knowledgable staff. A wonderful trip, and a good pitch up en route to Skomer Island.

    Disliked:

The showers could do with more hot water, and perhaps a tidy.

Local attractions

Slate Mill Lodge is in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only fully coastal national park in Britain and crammed with cragged cliffs, sandy beaches and estuaries – all most excellent locales for coastal walks, swimming, surfing, fishing and other watery pursuits.

Make for Dale a couple of miles awayt for a heady introduction to Welsh watersports: the windsurfing and sailing centre here offers instruction in both as well as kayaking and powerboating for all levels, or boat charters and trips are available around the Dale and Marloes peninsulas to try deep sea fishing. Also take a boat out on a deep sea safari around Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm islands for some of the best wildlife spotting in the land.

If you're more into padding gently along sands, several are within a few miles of Slate Mill: isolated, quiet and spectacularly scenic Marloes Sands with first-class swimming and surfing; quiet Musselwick Sands with stunning views to St Davids; the sheltered bay of Dale, popular with families and yachters; and sandy Druidstone Haven, where you'll find not only rock pools but a waterfall.

And for walks, the 30-mile Broad Haven to Milford Haven stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is about 15 minutes' drive from Slate Mill Lodge: the team can arrange pickups, dropoffs or packed lunches as required.
