General

  • Private streamside pitches in a secluded Welsh valley
  • Close to the coast and Skomer Island
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; breakfasts and dinners available

What a super little site is Slate Mill Lodge, in a secluded Welsh valley with plenty of privacy for pitching up.

Birdwatchers and nature fans – this Pembrokeshire coast park is for you, as it's near the birsdspotting haven of Skomer Island and within a short drive of the wildlife-laden coastal path to regard puffins, heaps of spring and summer wildflowers, and seals nursing their pups at the end of the summer season. (You'll see all sorts of other species soaring and roaming around the campsite too.)

Beach buffs – this is also a site for you: Slate Mill Lodge is within a mile as the crow flies of at least four peaceful and unspoilt Pembrokeshire beaches for plunging into/onto water: kaykaing, sailing, kitesurfing, diving and windsurfing are all easily accessible from the site. As is fishing, and we think this is the place to point out that Slate Mill Lodge allows campfires and barbecues.

The tent, tourer and motorhome pitches at Slate Mill are alongside its lodge, where guests can dig into the big breakfasts of a morn or dinner of an evening, all utilising homemade, fresh or free-range produce from the Slate Mill Lodge organic garden.

Pitches are along a stream and have plenty of privacy from other campers, and the amenities include a modern facilities block with separate male and female loos and showers, a washing-up area with hot water, charging facilities and use of fridges and freezers.

    Friendly and helpful owner.
Well maintained toilet, shower and washing-up facilities (not the best ever but better than most).
The cool quirky landscaped layout with the stream, bridges and numbered individual clearings - so much nicer than a simple rectangular field.
Wildlife (including the owner's chickens who would happily trot right up to our tent).
Pretty, sheltered location. Our friends, camping at nearby Marloes were nearly blown into the sea during a storm whilst we had no more than a bit of moderate buffeting.
Thoughtful touches like free phone-charging points and communal fridge.
Location in general - four nice beaches within a 15 minute drive.
For some, not having a watering hole or eaterie within an easy walk is a disadvantage but I'm also able to see that as an advantage.

    Disliked:

The right turn out of the site (towards Marloes and Dale) onto the bend requires winding down your windows to listen for oncoming traffic (not great in the rain). I tended to always turn left but then turn around in the next drive in order to reduce the "Russian Roulette" factor. I'd agree with previous comments that a mirror opposite the entrance would be extremely helpful.
The only other negative I can think of is that there can occasionally be a tiny bit of road noise, especially on one side of the stream. It's not exactly the M6 by any means but you might be as likely to be woken in the morning by the exhaust of a passing farm vehicle or truck as birdsong. However, the hedges and trees keep this to a minimum.

The entire site and how it was laid out. It would have been nice if the web site mentioned that the bar was no longer open but it did';t detract from the visit.Once we knew what was what we just brought everything in and all was well. The shower rooms and toilets were fine and clean with little or no waiting .
We enjoyed the site very much.

    Disliked:

The area of Wales it's located in but nothing else

    Disliked:

Where do I start. The pitch was nothing but rubble so had nightmare to drive pegs in. The camping area was being used as a car park for other campers. The area was flooded for part of the field so people having issues getting in and out. No hot water at all. Cold showers. Unless you were first in the morning to use hot water nothing else for rest of the day. Might as well camped on the road and when complained about it they did nothing.

Local attractions

Slate Mill Lodge is in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only fully coastal national park in Britain and crammed with cragged cliffs, sandy beaches and estuaries – all most excellent locales for coastal walks, swimming, surfing, fishing and other watery pursuits.

Make for Dale a couple of miles from the campsite for a heady introduction to Welsh watersports: the windsurfing and sailing centre here offers instruction in both as well as kayaking and powerboating for all levels, or boat charters and trips are available around the Dale and Marloes peninsulas to try deep sea fishing. Also take a boat out on a deep sea safari around Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm islands for some of the best wildlife-spotting in the land.

If you're more into padding gently along sands, several are within a few miles of Slate Mill: isolated, quiet and spectacularly scenic Marloes Sands with first-class swimming and surfing; quiet Musselwick Sands with stunning views to St Davids; the sheltered bay of Dale, popular with families and yachters; and sandy Druidstone Haven, where you'll find not only rock pools but a waterfall.

And for walks, the 30-mile Broad Haven to Milford Haven stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is about 15 minutes' drive from Slate Mill Lodge: the team can arrange pick-ups, drop-offs or packed lunches as required.
