General

  • Close to award-winning Pembrokeshire beaches
  • Near the ferry port for Ireland at Rosslare
  • Within walking distance of Fishguard and the coastal path

You might be all of a dither about deciding days out when staying at decidedly relaxed Tregroes Touring and Camping Site on the north Pembrokeshire coast. Its closest sandy beach is a mile and a half away, and, as this is Pembrokeshire, a few weeks’ worth of award-winning sands are a pushover to get to from a Tregroes base.

Eats, shops and sightseeing are sorted at the old coastal town of Fishguard (and the local pubs), within a 20-minute walk. And, although the site is set in quiet countryside, it’s close enough to the A40 that it’s decidedly simple to get to an abundant amount of north Pembrokeshire attractions and activities – St Davids, for example, is less than half an hour’s drive away.

Or you might pick to simply ditch the car and catch a bus or train from Fishguard – and speaking of the old coastal town of Fishguard, Fishguard Harbour is where the Irish ferry departs for Rosslare – a week in Ireland either side of a Pembrokeshire holiday might sound decidedly Tre-mendous too.

Or... you might just decide to stay on base, close to the spectacular scenery and wildlife-rich countryside of the Pembrokeshire coast, and lazing about on an extensively-sized pitch picked right where you please. The kids could run around expending energy in the ample space on site while you kick back under an awning with an aperitif watching the splendid Pembrokeshire sunset.

Please note

Camp fires are only permitted in purpose designed fire pits which are available to hire on site.

    Nice owner, calm camping.

    Disliked:

They had problems with the water pressure (due to external contractors) during our stay so showering was difficult. Showers are a little dated.

From the manager...

Thanks for the review, glad you enjoyed and hopefully, over all you had good value for money. Hopefully see you again some day.

Present owners have only been there for six weeks. Very approachable and extremely helpful. They will be carrying out extensive improvements over the winter. Toilet block will be improved and hardstandings laid down.
Plenty to see and do in the area. Town centre is walkable and not too far from the site. We are looking to returning there, especially if the owners carry out the proposed improvements.
Also very dog and family friendly..

    Disliked:

Water pressure low at present due to electricity board having fractured water pipes on site, but new water pipes due to be laid soon.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, yes we have some things to do over the winter and hopefully our water "issue" is sorted but glad you enjoyed your time with us at TregroesPark. See you next time.
Thanks again,

Colin & Sam.

Location easy to find and get to with caravan compared to some camp sites we passed on small lanes. Very dog friendly, tidy campsite with plenty of space.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but showers were not consistently warm, either went hot or cold but managed for the couple of days

From the manager...

Thanks for your review and glad you liked Tregroes Park. We have had issues with water recently but all is in hand.
Hope to see you again some day.

A very friendly family run site. 27/08/2017

The new owners of this site have only been running the site for six weeks, the site was obviously run down prior to them taking it over.
If they carry on as they are now the sky is the limit for them, how refreshing that their two young sons are involved in the business, what a future they have in front of them in the years to come.
We had a warm welcome on our arrival and the eldest of the two young boys couldn't do enough to help us settle in.
Yes the toilet block needs a face-lift and renovation ( which they intend to do during the close down period) but it was kept spotlessly clean throughout being serviced many times a day.
This was a bank holiday weekend with many activities on in Fishguard and the weather was fantastic, all other sites in Pembrokeshire were full and by Saturday night Tregroes was at maximum capacity, the new owners having not experienced this before coped extremely well and found time to visit all on site to make sure that all was well.
I wish this family every success in their future, they deserve it.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We are humbled by your lovely comments and delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Tregroes Park. As you mention, our two boys are a huge help to us as they carry out their daily chores & they are so chuffed with what you have said, thank you:)
We look forward to seeing you again here at Tregroes.
Thanks & appreciation,

Good flat smooth ground. Toilets were cleaned and worked fine. Owner came to tell noisy people to be quiet when it was gone 11pm.

    Disliked:

Showers were poor - 1 water supply split between 4 meant an ice cold dribble.
Several ladies toilets do not shut/lock.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback. We apologise for the drop in water pressure, this was caused by external contractors fracturing the mains pipe which supplies our site. I hope you will see from our previous reviews that our normal water arrangements are of a good standard. The door lock in the ladies has been replaced this morning too.
All in all, we hope that you enjoyed you visit to this beautiful part of Pembrokeshire, thank you for coming to stay with us and we hope to see you again some day.
Colin & Sam.

Local attractions

Fishguard first if travelling by feets rather than by car: like pretty much all the towns of the Pembrokeshire coast, Fishguard’s a beaut. It’s made up mainly of the old harbour of Lower Town and the town itself set on the clifftop with a fine and dandy selection of shops, restaurants, delis and pubs, a local leisure centre with pool is in town if you fancy an indoor dip, and the town theatre if you fancy films or live events.

Round and about, hire a kayak from a local operator or activity centre and take off a-paddling around Fishguard Bay – as it might be tricky manipulating a camera as well as a paddle, have an additional day sea fishing from Fishguard Harbour for mackerel, dogfish, pollock and whiting and taking splendid shots of your whopping catches as you go.

Fishguard, its surrounds and other Pembrokeshire havens like Newport Bay are among the best in the country to see wildlife, particularly of the watery sort including dolphins, seals, porpoises and seabirds and – if you’re very lucky and hold your camera very still, possibly a minke whale.

Several operators offer wildlife boat safaris around these parts, St Davids Peninsula and the wildlife havens of Skomer Island and Ramsey Island and around the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to see sealife, seabirds and inland critters, and plenty more are on hand for active days out coasteering, cycling, sailing, horse riding, surfing, caving and climbing.

On land, access the 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Fishguard for a 12-mile up and down hike to Newport and then, if you so fancy, the 14 miles to the end of the trail at St Dogmaels. (If you don’t fancy, catch the coastal bus instead.)

And then have a decided delve into Welsh history – the historic buildings of the villages around Tregroes Touring and Camping Site are a simple place to start, as are coastal towns like St Dogmaels with its twelfth century abbey and the Pen-Rhiw burial chambers at Goodwick just along the shore.

Apart from Powys, Pembrokeshire has more Scheduled Ancient Monuments including ancient forts, stone circles and Bronze Age roads than anywhere else in Wales: start off at the Garn Wen burial chamber in Fishguard, then have a historic day or two among the stone circles of the Preseli Hills, the cathedral at St Davids and the long-ago cairns of Carningli Mountain.
