General

  • Family-owned and well-maintained site
  • Near Fishguard in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside

Ever been to Cwm Gwaun? If not, gwaun. It's in the Pembrokeshire National Park a mile and a half from the fab town of Fishguard and has been called 'one of the great surprises of Pembrokeshire': this is Wales in proper old school style, and all surrounded by stunning valley and mountain views. (If you're a hiker or biker, you'll want to hike or bike here.)

To stay in these surrounds, settle down at Gwaun Vale Caravan Park, a family-run site at the start of the Cwm Gwaun. It has the fab views you'd expect around these parts, a small play area, a laundry, two dishwashing sinks, toilets and free hot showers.

A small friendly pub serving food within five minutes' walk. Dogs are welcome and the site has a separate area to exercise them.

Gwaun Vale Caravan Park allows barbecues, so perhaps mull on the image of you sizzling up a thick juicy steak for supper amid the splendid sight of a Cwn Gwaun sunset – gwaun...

This site is a member of Gwaun Vale Caravan Park group.

Small campsite with level pitches and lovely views. Very well manicured with beautiful flowers. Has a laundry room and lots of information leaflets on local area etc.

We enjoyed our stay there, however it was very quiet with only 2 other tourers and a few seasonal caravans that were empty. I can imagine it feeling crowded if full as such a small site.

    Disliked:

Showers were awful, in my opinion. They are basic, which is not a problem but they are not fit for purpose, they don't drain away and you are left wading in water which then flooded outside the cubicle, this resulted in me returning to my pitch in my towel as I couldn't dry myself in there!!

Also the dog area leaves a lot to be desired, it's a small steep bank of land which is fenced.

It seems to me that they have focussed too much on the landscaping of the place, which is beautiful, however maybe they should have upgraded the facilities.

Oh and we never saw reception open. Only saw owner once on site for 2 mins in his van just checking who we were. Our name was on a board in reception window and said to choose pitch...it remained there for the 2 days we were there!

Gwaun Vale Touring Park is a quaint little site a mile up the B-road out of Fishguard. It has pleasant views of fields and valleys with the sea visible in the distance. It never got busy or noisy when we were there, in fact we took to sleeping with the curtains open just for the view of the sunrise!
The toilet block was always clean and well-kept, and wasn't closed for cleaning at inconvenient times as is often the case at touring sites. There is a washing machine operated by tokens which cost £3.50 from reception and a tumble dryer which costs £1 per 20 minutes.

    Disliked:

The access to the touring pitches can be a bit tight if you haven't got a motor mover.
The tumble dryer coin unit hasn't been modified to use the new £1 coin. Take plenty of old £1 coins with you if you need to use the dryer (or pay for parking in Fishguard!)
We didn't find any coin-operated machines which accepted the new £1 during our stay in Pembrokeshire.
The site doesn't have any footpaths nearby; the only pedestrian route out is along a twisty, steep B-road for a mile in either direction; something to be aware of if you have free-range children.

It was very quiet and we could choose our own pitch. Was a good base just about a mile from fishguard and was about 30 mile from Tenby. Enjoyed our stay a lot.

    Disliked:

The toilets door were propped open 24/7 meaning they received a lot of bug visitors. Spiders moths wasps and all sorts while your taking a shower or using the loo. I did not like this. Also never saw any body on reception at all and was there for a week!

Local attractions

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a smashing place for spectacular scenery: head here for hikes or just sit and take in the views. Wildlife is all around too, so look out for cormorants diving into the sea, squawking gulls following the many sailing boats, and porpoises and dolphins in the waters below the cliffs. Grey seal pups will be around from September to December.

For walks, follow the Pembrokeshire Coast Path on its stretch from Fishguard to Newport (have some time in Fishguard first) or follow the coast around Strumble Head, also part of the coast path and among the most remote landscape in Pembrokeshire.

Spectacular beach scenery and more wildlife watching are close to hand at the likes of Newport, Cwm Yr Eglwys, Pwllgwaleod Beach; Whitsands and Newgale Beach are the spots to go for surfing. Or take the kids to Folly Farm or to Oakwood Theme Park, less than an hour away, or to see the tiny city of St Davids and its cathedral.

Finally, anyone visiting the Cwm Gwaun area can't tick it off their travel list without a drop in to the Dyffryn Arms or Bessie's, run by generations of the same family since 1845. You might then also fancy a trip to Bluestone Brewery in the Preseli Hills...
