General

  • Family-owned and well-maintained site
  • Near Fishguard in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside

Ever been to Cwm Gwaun? If not, gwaun. It's in the Pembrokeshire National Park a mile and a half from the fab town of Fishguard and has been called 'one of the great surprises of Pembrokeshire': this is Wales in proper old school style, and all surrounded by stunning valley and mountain views. (If you're a hiker or biker, you'll want to hike or bike here.)

To stay in these surrounds, settle down at Gwaun Vale Caravan Park, a family-run site at the start of the Cwm Gwaun. It has the fab views you'd expect around these parts, a small play area, a laundry, two dishwashing sinks, toilets and free hot showers.

A small friendly pub serving food within five minutes' walk. Dogs are welcome and the site has a separate area to exercise them.

Gwaun Vale Caravan Park allows barbecues, so perhaps mull on the image of you sizzling up a thick juicy steak for supper amid the splendid sight of a Cwn Gwaun sunset – gwaun...

This site is a member of Gwaun Vale Caravan Park group.

Pretty, remote site on hillside with good views and level pitches. 13/09/2017

  • Liked:

Lovely countryside location with far sea views. Very pretty site with well kept garden and many pitches had a picnic table. The level pitches are staggered on a very steep hillside so everyone gets a great view. Very remote so transport needed but handy for driving into Fishguard and surrounding areas. Very peaceful site, Torch needed at night as very dark so great for star gazing.Good washrooms and adequate showers with separate wash basin in toilet. Very friendly with excellent information room. It was very windy when we were there but the site was quite sheltered......would depend on direction of wind I suppose but not bad considering that most winds are probably from the west coast so well designed.

    Disliked:

The site is on a fast road (though not particularly busy) but would be unsafe to walk along so transport needed each time you go out as too far to walk anywhere safely and we like to leave the campervan and walk when possible so probably not ideal if you don't have transport to use. Not a lot to do on site for families. Wouldn't like to tow a caravan up the steep slope, though many do.

Couldn't fault this quiet small friendly site!
Ideal location in the Gwaun valley, rural yet close enough to Fishguard (ten minutes) to nip into the shops for milk and bread. Great for walking in the Pembrokeshire National Park.
    Wash rooms satisfactory.

The views of the countryside and the sea! The pitches are a decent size with power and water and easy to access, although a large motorhome struggled on the upper tier when we were there.
Facilities are adequate for the size of the site and were clean enough but could do with some updating, however everything worked.
    Dog area very useful.
    Location great.

    Disliked:

Not that we needed it but Reception hardly ever open, I'm sure some campers came and went without paying because no one was there, had to show some late arriving Germans around myself.

Local attractions

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a smashing place for spectacular scenery: head here for hikes or just sit and take in the views. Wildlife is all around too, so look out for cormorants diving into the sea, squawking gulls following the many sailing boats, and porpoises and dolphins in the waters below the cliffs. Grey seal pups will be around from September to December.

For walks, follow the Pembrokeshire Coast Path on its stretch from Fishguard to Newport (have some time in Fishguard first) or follow the coast around Strumble Head, also part of the coast path and among the most remote landscape in Pembrokeshire.

Spectacular beach scenery and more wildlife watching are close to hand at the likes of Newport, Cwm Yr Eglwys, Pwllgwaleod Beach; Whitsands and Newgale Beach are the spots to go for surfing. Or take the kids to Folly Farm or to Oakwood Theme Park, less than an hour away, or to see the tiny city of St Davids and its cathedral.

Finally, anyone visiting the Cwm Gwaun area can't tick it off their travel list without a drop in to the Dyffryn Arms or Bessie's, run by generations of the same family since 1845. You might then also fancy a trip to Bluestone Brewery in the Preseli Hills...
