  • Dog-friendly bell tents surrounded by the Monmouthshire countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Raglan Castle; 25 minutes from the Wye Valley
  • Pubs and restaurants in Raglan, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site
If the name The Walks isn’t already a giveaway, you’ve landed upon a site that’s in a top spot for a Monmouthshire getaway involving plenty of getting out and about. It’s not a basic place where you’ll be setting up camp on the ground, however – bell tents are the hiking hideaways here. They are luxuriously kitted out with a kingsize bed, electric points and minimalistic décor, with shower and toilet facilities a short walk down the drive. The well-maintained grounds are a peaceful setting indeed, surrounded by gorgeous countryside. A bit of a foodie? The nearest pubs and restaurants are in Raglan, which is 10 minutes’ drive away. Raglan Castle is the same distance away (what a feat the Welshmen who built this grand fortress managed). With the A40 10 minutes’ drive away, getting out on your explorations is easy enough. The road goes all the way up to Ross-on-Wye (half an hour’s drive), which has 19th-century walls to explore and paddleboarding, canoeing and rowing available on the river. In the opposite direction, the road travels down towards Cardiff and Newport. When not out doing your walks or watersports, you might want to chill out on the grassy spaces around the site or amble around Abergavenny (25 minutes’ drive), a fabulous foodie destination with local produce and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal nearby.

Local attractions

Kids can act like an apprentice farmer for the day at Raglan Farm Park (15 minutes’ drive), which has ride-on tractors for an extra buzz. Welsh capital Cardiff (45 minutes) has heaps of entertainment for actual kids and big kids too, including boat rides at Cardiff Bay, an ancient castle and plenty of buzzy bars, restaurants and activities like escape rooms. Grab your tasty goodies from the market town of Monmouth (20 minutes) – it's a great place to source some picnic grub for walks in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes). The Devil's Pulpit (50 minutes) is one such hike, along part of the Offa’s Dyke Path and with a stunning view over the Wye slopes and Tintern Abbey. Take in extra scenery by canoeing down the river Wye too, or find more gorgeous views along the trails over the Sugarloaf and Usk Valley (half an hour). And of course, Clydach Gorge (half an hour) is excellent for scenery too – think a river with waterfalls, caves and old railway lines.
