General

  • Riverside location in a secluded countryside setting
  • Close to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean
  • Well-equipped play area with climbing wall and play deck

Pitch up by a Welsh river in Monmouthshire's clean, friendly and well-maintained Glen Trothy Caravan Park, in a secluded countryside setting near the village of Mitchel Troy about a mile and a half from Monmouth.

You'll be nicely placed here for traipses around the Wye Valley and the lush Forest of Dean – and as it's Wales, the area as a whole is full of ancient castles and abbeys, spectacular scenery and miles of walking trails.

Kids will be kept occupied on site at the well-equipped and centrally set play area, with swings, climbing frame, play deck and cabin, ladders, a climbing wall and a sand pit, and grownups are well sorted with the site amenities: Glen Trothy has a launderette, a washing-up room and a toilet and shower block with showers, hand dryers and hairdryers. The facilities are suitable for guests with disabilities.

Propane, butane gas and campingaz are also available, as well as a chemical disposal point.

Please note

A charge of £0.40 applies for the use of shower.

the fact it broke up our journey

    Disliked:

we stayed here last night, for one night. All we wanted was to be able to pitch our small overnight tent, have a bite to eat and get some rest before continuing our journey, not too much to ask you may think. haha. The site is very overcrowded, the toilets where dirty, three out of the six ladies toilets where unusable, one of the clean ones the door didn't lock, whilst I attempted to wash my hands in filthy sinks a woman came in walking her dog, amazing. At the end of our tent was a fence, I looked over and saw a lake which was really smelly. whilst trying to settle to sleep we endured, children playing hide and seek, shouting and screaming around our tent, the parents seemed not to care and the children thought it was funny to disturb us, lack of consideration, people walking their dogs allowed them to pee up the edge of the tent, dogs where also roaming about off their lead. people walking to the nearby tap walked straight across our pitch. then a dog fight started at about midnight, which lead to two men shouting at each other, while the dogs where continuing fighting. we couldn't complain as there was no one in the office till the next morning, we seriously contemplated going to the nearest service station and sleeping in the car it got so bad. I am sure it would have been quieter and cleaner. we had been travelling 6 and a half hours and we where in desperate need of sleep as this was the halfway point of our journey, there is a very busy road nearby,( more noise to contend with) After managing to get approx. 4 hours sleep we decided to leave. another haha. as we didn't have a fob to get out ( we didn't need one apparently as we where only staying the night) and this was 8am, (office didn't open till 10am) we where stuck. a nice gentleman in a nearby caravan lifted the barrier for us to leave. we would never recommend or return. this has to be the worst site we have ever been to. we have been to over 20 campsites in England and Wales.

From the manager...

WOW, lets start at the top, since you didn't include your booking ID on the review, you booked one night at £12, gave an arrival time of 12pm then wanted us to stay on late to book you in as you were not going to make it before we closed, we were at home anyway so booked you in after the office closed. The site was about half full the night you stayed, and you had an empty pitch besides you. We did go out for food at around 7pm and returned at 9 but other than this we were in all night and would have dealt with any complaint you had brought to us. I was also in the office from before 8am, I opened the barrier remotely for you at around 8:15am when you pulled up to the exit and beeped your horn, you were driving a blue Peugeot just to be sure I have the right person. You did not have a fob to let yourself out as you did not want to leave a £10 deposit for one, which is why I operated the barrier remotely for you. I would be very curious to see the 'smelly lake' you refer to, there is no lake on site, there is a river running alongside the site but obviously this is running water, not standing and does not smell. Equally, our facilities are all brand new and cleaned once a day during the week and twice daily on the weekend, there are no cubicles out of order for any reason, all doors are locking perfectly. I must say we had an issue with two dogs loose on site at around 6:30 - 7pm, just before we left, this was brought to our attention, we asked both parties to keep their dogs on leads and they both were put on leads while we were there. I thank you for your expertise having stayed at over 20 sites, we currently run 15 parks of different types, across Wales and England and I am absolutely certain that most, if not all of this review is factually incorrect nonsense, the reasoning behind it I really do not know. It is worth noting for anybody else reading this that we have received two other reviews below from the same night, an 8 and a 10, both giving high scores for cleanliness and mentioning good, clean facilities.

Local attractions

This is walking land… Monmouthshire has over 1,000 miles of public footpaths to investigate, and walks all over the county including a couple around Glen Trothy's local village of Mitchel Troy, through woods and farmland and with views right across Wales and across the border to Herefordshire.

County town Monmouth, the birthplace of Henry V, is these days a Fair Trade town with many independent shops, regular markets, cafés and restaurants alongside chain shops, the Monmouth Museum and the Savoy Theatre, believed to be the oldest working theatre in Wales.

If you'd rather get a bit more active, the River Wye is around for kayaking and paddleboarding (and fishing for more contemplative times), and golf is available nearby. Too tame? Take a tandem paraglide flight off the Blorenge hill in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

If the weather is a bit drizzly, piles of indoor attractions are around too, like the museums of Abergavenny, Monmouth or Chepstow or a castle visit to Caldicot and its country park, Tretower Court, Goodrich or Raglan.

Must see

  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (1.6 miles)
  • Raglan Castle (5.1 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (7.3 miles)

  • The Kymin (2.3 miles)
  • Skenfrith Castle (6.6 miles)
