- Well-maintained and quiet country park set in a south Wales valley
- Countryside strolls, bike rides and plenty of good dog walking areas
- Near Pen-Y-fan Country Park for fly fishing, picnics and pond walks
Plonk yourself at Pen Y Fan Caravan and Leisure Park for a relaxing kid-friendly break in the middle of south Wales: once you're there you'll be met with smashing surroundings, pleasant views of the Welsh mountains and easy access to wildlife watching spots. The town is 35 minutes' walk and down a big hill, and if you don't fancy the walk back up there are plenty of taxis there that will chauffeur you back up to the park.
Set across a whopping 42 acres in the south Wales eastern valleys, this is a large family-friendly site with a big brightly coloured playground and plenty of space for the kids to tire themselves out in. When they're done running around, you can pick them up a few sweets and snacks at the site's self-service shop – just leave your money in the very trusting honesty tin when you've got everything you came for.
Barbecues being a staple of the British camping trip, there are plenty for guests to use close to the accommodation area should you fancy sizzling a sausage or three. For other food there's the on-site pub restaurant, the Traveller's Rest, which is accessible throughout and serves lunch between 12pm and 3:30pm (Tuesday to Sunday) and dinner between 7pm and 11pm (Tuesday to Saturday). If you happen to be at the park during a festive season, count on special menus, discos and entertainment galore.
Whenever you've finished a good day availing of all the outdoor fun that's around the area, you can come back and sort your sodden togs in the laundry room, equipped with coin-operated washers and dryers, ready for the next day's adventures. Other amenities include two sanitary blocks with toilets, hot showers and a baby change area with nappy disposal, as well as an accessible bathroom with a changing bed.
Also worth a mention is that Pen Y Fan Caravan and Leisure Park is big on safety – the speed bumps and 5mph speed limit that's enforced throughout the park keeps kids (and adults) well out of harm's way.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.

Outdoor explorers will be well catered to here in Monmouthshire, which has plenty of hiking, mountain biking and climbing options within easy reach in and around the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains.
Pen-Y-fan Country Park is a 25-minute stroll from the park and is a popular pick with guests for relaxing picnics, walks around the pond, and fly fishing – just be sure to get your day pass from the leisure centre or the fishing shop in Pontllanfraith. Other activities within easy reach include clay pigeon shooting, six miles south of the site, and a nine-hole golf course, three miles away.
A little further afield in Caerphilly there's an activity centre for orienteering, archery, abseiling, campcraft and obstacle course adventures, while plenty of woodland walks and cycling routes await over at Sirhowy Valley Country Park; follow the flat route that runs along a former railway track, or trek down the trail that takes you through the Flatwoods Meadows Local Nature Reserve and along the Sirhowy River.
Also accessible from the country park is National Route 47 of the National Cycle Network for two-wheeled trips westward to Parc Penallta, or south down to Newport. The park's traditional working Ynys Hywel Farm is open all year round, and close by is Graig Goch Woodland Local Nature Reserve, an ancient mixed woodland that's accessed via steep climb for great views over the surrounding Monmouthshire countryside.
Now onto the history that's around the area. The story of Wales as the world's most prolific producer of iron and coal is told at the UNESCO-listed Blaenavon World Heritage Centre, which comprises the quarries, coal and ore mines, miners' houses and furnaces of Blaenavon Ironworks. The Big Pit National Coal Museum, visitor centre, gallery and their ever-evolving exhibitions all help to bring the area's history to life.
Also worth a visit for a trip back in time is Caerphilly Castle, which covers 30 acres and is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in the Western world.
