General

  • Family-run farm welcoming guests since 1976
  • Private fishing lake and private bathroms
  • Access to an 18-hole parkland golf course

With the kids out of bounds, a little birdie might tell you that guests at adults-only Wernddu Farm Golf Club could be in for a treat. Owned by three generations of the same family, not only is the long-established and welcoming site (which first opened its field back in 1976) right next to a golf course, but its private fishing lake also makes sure things are perfectly above par for grown-ups seeking some relaxing and quiet activities on their holiday.

Guests can swing to Wernddu Farm Golf Club to take advantage of a range of facilities which the managers have got down to a tee: private bathrooms with toilets, showers and wash basins, and separate areas for him and for her with mirrors, plugs for hairdryers and shaver points.

The undercover dishwashing area is well maintained, while the laundry room with a coin-operated washing machine and tumble dryer will ensure your best pair of checks are pristine each and every day when teeing off.

Alongside their handy amenities, Wernddu Farm has access to an 18-hole parkland golf course, a driving range and a nine-hole pitch and putt course (extra charges apply) - all of which are just opposite the park, so all you need do is secure yourself a reliable caddy to keep up.

The on-site clubhouse is open all day and serves hot food over lunchtime. A little word of warning – the views from the site over the Black Mountains and Usk Valley may just distract you from beating your par, but you'll probably think it’ll be well worth it…

lovely site, two halves to the site, those staying long term and tourers. Huge pitch bounded by hedges and small trees with electric and water. Spotless facilities. Washing up facilities and lashings of hot water, take your own plug to be on the safe side! Peaceful and relaxing.Planning a repeat visit which says it all! No WIFI apart from at the club house which serves hot food in the evening and offers a takeaway service.

Location was good. Clubhouse nice and also convenient.

    Disliked:

No hairdryers in the ladies shower block. Never encountered that before. Was lovely and peaceful on Friday. Then on Saturday, about 30 people turned up in tents together. I thought groups were discouraged on sites these days. They completely spoiled the rest of the weekend. Screaming, shouting, swearing, drinking all day until 11 0 clock at night. We were forced to go out of the camp site which we did not want to do as we wanted a restful weekend. The disappointing thing was there were no Wardens around to witness what was going on.

We liked the location of site, a cycle ride from Abergavenny. The way the site is split up by hedges makes it feel quite secluded, until you walk around you don't realise how many units are there.

    Disliked:

The amenities! There is no barrier matting at the doors so all the mud from the site tracks right into the shower rooms which as they are wet rooms mean it never feels clean, plastic shower shoes/flip flops a must. In some of the rooms the water tracks out into the corridor and not all campers use the brooms to brush the water away. The cleanliness wasn't the best, a little training and some decent kit (not just cheapo wilko stuff)would better reflect that they are a business.

Local attractions

They may be called the Black Mountains, but we’d say that with with just one quick glance across these spectacular hills, you’ll be feeling more than all-white, positively bright and breezy in fact.

Spanning part of the Welsh-English border, the little town of Abergavenny not only sits at the 'Gateway of Wales’ but also at the foot of the mountains, and to get to this interesting little town from the site will take just over five minutes by car, or around a healthy 45-minute walk if you’d rather explore by foot. Ten minutes by car from the site and you’ll reach the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Foodies, shoppers, historians or ale-samplers... the area has something to for all. From toys to wool to old-fashioned sweets, the independent craft shops, boutiques and galleries in Abergavenny will satisfy those looking for a gift (for themselves or for others) to take home, while the gastropubs, fine dining options and cafés are so tempting you may just need to sample all of them – well, you are on hols after all. A popular food festival takes place in town too.

Just over 20 minutes’ drive south-west will take you to the World Heritage Site at Blaenavon Ironworks, the setting for BBC’s Coal House, and where you can explore the remains of the furnaces and the restored Water Balance Tower. Reconstructions and exhibitions will ensure the kids are kept busy taking in a fair few facts too.

Roam about to the Roman baths, fortress and amphitheatre at Caerleon, about half an hour by car southward from Wernddu Farm, or step back in time 900 years at the Tretower Court and Castle which has been home to many a well-to-do Welsh family over the centuries, about 13 miles north-west of the site in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Cast your eye over the many castles of the area, including the remains of the Norman castle in Abergavenny itself, which is also home to the Abergavenny Museum (family activities are available at the castle to keep mini explorers thirsty for more). And, if it’s you that’s feeling parched, the town and surrounding Monmouthshire area has some country pubs serving a range of locally brewed tipples.

Skirrid Fawr? Blorenge? Or Sugar Loaf? Nope, not the result of sampling one too many brews, but some of the walks that ready-to-go ramblers of all levels can embark upon from Abergavenny and around the hills.

The gently sloped Skirrid Fawr takes you through pretty woodland; Blorenge is one for those after a tougher hike, but the views over Abergavenny at the end will be well worth it; and the (relatively) short and sweet walk up the Sugar Loaf mountain, which is just two miles from the centre of Abergavenny, also treats strollers to some corking scenery.

The Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail can be reached from Wernddu Farm - drive south to Chepstow to start the trail from its beginning, or hop along it as it passes Monmouth.

There’s 177 miles in all, which take you up to Prestatyn at Liverpool Bay, but however long or short your pursuit, the varied landscape will no doubt take your breath away, and the wildlife to spy will be sure to entertain those on littler legs. Well-behaved pooches can take to the trail (just keep them on a lead in areas close to livestock), and while the path isn’t suitable for bikes, there are plenty of other opportunities for cyclists to ride around the area from Wernddu Farm.

There’s a tourist information centre at the halfway point of the walk in the village of Knighton - here you’ll find a mini exhibition about the history of the trail and other spots in the town for stocking up on any much-needed snacks.
