General

  • Activity campsite overlooking Swansea Bay
  • Abseiling, orienteering, bushcraft, archery, canoeing, assault course
  • Free wifi

It's really just as well there are spectacular vistas from Clyne Farm Centre overlooking Swansea Bay and a couple of miles from the Gower beaches – for you'll likely want to sit and stare at the scenery while recovering from whatever activities you've been up to that day.

This is a site for active sorts: the farm surrounding the campsite has been used by keen Scout and Guide groups since before World War II, and these days the centre attached to the campsite can see you sorted for a dizzying array of outdoor options.

The activities on offer at Clyne Farm Centre include horse riding, archery, gorge walking, indoor climbing, body boarding, surfing, Segway racing, mountain biking, outdoor survival courses' and 'the muddiest assault course in the world – as we say, you'll likely want to sit and stare at the scenery of an evening while you recover.

The campsite itself is nicely spacious – the Clyne Farm Centre team limit the number of tents on site at any time so things don't feel overcrowded – and has a pick of pitches in either the main camping field, or the woodland area accessed via a steepish stone drive through fields. Don't fret if you get rained out either, a stone barn is on site for emergency rainy use.

A decent range of facilities is on site including newly added solar -powered shower rooms with communal and family rooms, loos, changing rooms and – possibly our Clyne Farm fave – a washing-up room in a restored railway wagon; the hot water here is solar-powered too.

The main office building comes equipped with a pool table, table tennis, vending machines and free wifi; guests can buy sweets, drinks, food and milk at reception. To line stomachs properly before a day's activities, the 'Mabinogion Feast' fry-up or cereal and toast are both available to buy in the main centre (book in reception the day before).

Car parking is available for both sets of pitches about 50 yards away from each: you can drive to the entrance of the main camping fields to unload your kit.

Basic camping that needs some attention. 21/08/2017

Fabulous views. Helpful Staff. Close to Swansea and surrounding countryside. Very cheap I paid £38 for four nights mid August, very good price.

    Disliked:

Pot wash facilities very poor no running hot water, hole in roof, so during the very heavy rain during my stay the place was nearly flooded. Outside the shed, or old railway carriage once charming now sad, the solar panel is smashed with glass in a very dangerous state. Before using the sinks etc. I had to clean with a spray cleaner to feel comfortable.
Showers ok but need a little attention, new shower heads and hoses.
My main criticism is that the campers' facilities could do with a little overhaul a couple of days work fixing the wash hut, fences around pitches, picking up the broken posts and odd patch of rubbish, and attending to the showers would make me feel they were not just taking my money. Pitches could become over crowded, they are a lot smaller than the website would lead you to believe and if it rains (it did, a lot) they are very muddy. The website photograph is not an accurate representation.

Some areas needed some TLC. There was some old glass doors leaned up against one of the cottages, not child safe. Old glass window in camping field just left.

Proximity to Swansea, it's very close to the city. But also feels very rural. Fantastic views all around the bay.

    Disliked:

There was no one around when I arrived at 6.30 on Saturday evening but someone did get back to me quickly when I rang the emergency number and told me where I could camp. You can't park next to your pitch, you have to leave you're car in the car park, which to be honest is only a short walk away. I didn't see anyone from the campsite the whole time I was there! The shop wasn't open when I went out in the mornings and was closed again when I arrived back. The camping fields aren't brilliant, quite bumpy, and we had a bit of a slug problem where we pitched. We even found them inside our shoes in the morning. Showers and toilets are ok when they were clean which wasn't all the time, they're quite dated, but OK for farm camping, I've seen worse. It's also quite noisy in the morning with escaped sheep bleating right next to the tent and cows mooing! But it's a farm so it was expected.

Poor, dirty campsite with poor maintenance and facilities 05/08/2017

The fact that this site was close to Swansea and the mumbles.

    Disliked:

Very poor campsite with a website that does not in any way represent the reality of the place. It is dirty, poor facilities, small fields surrounded by animals that get into the pitches in the night which is terrifying including a horse and sheep. The toilets are a long way from some of the pitches and are poorly signed and with just warm water but mostly cold. If it is wet and of course you cannot control the weather the fields do not drain and you will be walking in a waterlogged field and down muddy, dirty lanes covered in horse manure which is not cleaned regularly. The place seems to operate mostly as a horse stables and trekking place. The whole place is badly signed and fields

Nothing to like at all on this filthy site

    Disliked:

Nearly 30 years camping, mainly as a backpacker, this is the worst and filthiest campsite I have ever seen. So bad we decided not to even set up tent. The reception and shop not only empty of provisions, apart from a few chocolate bars, stank of rodents, and possibly not only ones in a cage. It was also filthy dirty and could have posed a health hazard if provisions had been available
Fences around pitching area, which we eventually found down a track covered in horse mess, were broken down and gates held together with baler twine. Grass had neither been cut for years, or had some dubious rubbish cleared away. Certainly not big enough for 60 pitches.
Water supply was a hose and tap tied to a fence, with no drain or other means of disposing of grey water. Looked briefly at toilets, 2, and decided not to venture into washing area as smelt and looked dirty.
Decided to waste money we had paid for 2 nights, £10 for a dog to stay for 2 nights!!!!

The view from the car park where there is no where to sit and take it in.

    Disliked:

Thoroughly disappointed at the campsite on arrival. No staff to greet and take to pitch. Spent 30 minutes in the rain looking for the camping ground as the map wasn't very clear. Was even more disappointed when I realised it looks nothing at all like the pictures and a lot of the camping ground was damaged. The fence to the pond which appeared to be considerably deep was broken which was a health and safety issue. I then attended the area which was provided to wash dishes. This was flooded and covered in food however there was no one else on the campsite at all. Then thought I would give it a go regardless of all this but had difficulty putting the tent up as the sheep decided to follow us wherever we went.
I then went back to the reception to attempt contacting the emergency number as needed to put tent up but couldn't move sheep, what a surprise no answer. Then managed to move the sheep myself only to realise the whole of the campsite was covered in either sheep mess and had holes in the ground from where animals had been on pitch. Decided not to pitch up as didn't want to damage tent in anyway.
I have grown up on farms and it can be a dangerous environment especially for people who do not know what they are doing. I did not feel it would be safe for my children and did not want the added cost of damaging my equipment. I understand from the add it was on a farm but surely there are health and safety issues that need to be addressed.
Complained to the campsite and was informed that the issue was the weather. As we camp every weekend and this is the first campsite I have encountered issues I did not consider the rain to be the problem but rather the health and safety issues and cosmetic wear. There were also no other campers which was an indication as to how good this campsite really is.

Directions

The site is just 3 miles from the centre of Swansea.

If you travelling west (eg from London), leave the M4 at Briton Ferry (Junction 42) on the A483, signposted Swansea. Pick up the signs for Mumbles and South Gower as you enter the city. Continue straight ahead on the A4067. This is a main road which follows the path of the shoreline of Swansea Bay with the sea on your left.

If you are travelling east (eg from Pembrokeshire) on the M4, leave at Junction 47 and take the A483. Pick up the signs for Sketty and Singleton Hospital. After 3 miles, pass the hospital on your left and turn right at the traffic lights signposted Mumbles, onto the A4067 - pass the playing fields before Blackpill and then follow the instructions below.

After 3 miles, pass the university on your right, then the playing fields on your right and a 9-hole golf course on your left. You will then enter the small village of Blackpill. There is a children's paddling pool lido area on the left. Here you need to be in the right-hand lane.

Just past the Woodman Pub (on your right) and the Murco Petrol station (on the left), turn right onto the B4436 Mayals Road at the part-time traffic lights (right turn only as you are in the right-hand lane), following the brown and white tourist signs for South Gower and Clyne Farm Centre.

Follow Mayals Road up the hill. You will be passing Clyne Gardens (behind a walled area) on your right. Take the first turning on the right (after about half a mile) into Westport Avenue. (If you start to drive into an area with common land either side of the road then you have gone too far!)

Drive through the houses to the top of the hill and turn right where you see the green Clyne Farm Centre sign. The office and reception area is on the left of the farmhouse.

From Mumbles
If you are coming from Mumbles, drive along the main coast road (A4067) towards Swansea for about 2 miles. Turn left onto the B4436 Mayals Road (left-hand filter lane) and follow the directions above from that point.

Local attractions

If you've any energy left after taking on the challenges of the activity centre, you'll find a good amount locally to tire you and the kids out.

The coastline a couple of miles away is a beauty: Gower was the first ever Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain and is known worldwide for its wide sandy beaches including Rhossili Bay, voted Britain's best beach and one of the top ten beaches in the world. (It was also once voted the UK's best picnic spot, so bring a basket).

Hitting the cities, Swansea is about 15 minutes away and buzzing with very lively nightlife as well as loads of other indoor attractions like shops, ten-pin bowling, the National Waterfront Museum and the LC Leisure Centre and waterpark.

If you're a footie fan, cheer on Swansea City AFC at Liberty Stadium: they're in the Premier League so you should see some top teams taking them on.

More into rugby? The Ospreys, part of the RaboDirect Pro12, also play at Liberty Stadium, and international teams including Wales can be cheered on at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium about an hour away.
