- Peaceful site for families, couples and relaxed sorts
- Well-priced café serving breakfasts, cream teas and off-license sales
- Ten minutes' walk from the beach
Sites with Jurassic Coast views, campfires allowed, a short stroll from the beach and an even shorter one to an award-winning pub always get the Pitchup.com vote. Add in an acclaimed new café on site and we do believe Heritage Coast Campsite is a winner.
Based in Glamorgan's Cowbridge and ten minutes' walk from Monknash beach across public footpaths, the much-liked Heritage Coast comes with the Monks Rest Café, a recent venture from Phillipa, Glynn and team that dishes up breakfasts in the type of belly-busting size of which we thoroughly approve.
Cream teas, Friday night suppers, off-license sales and properly-sized coffees/hot drinks are also on offer, all are at reasonable prices – and the café is quite arty and information-based too, with an art/photography gallery and heaps of leaflets and tourist info about the local area.
The shower, loo and utility facilities are newly built and include disabled facilities and hairdryers; complimentary mobile phone charging is available and there's a freezer for freezer packs.
Campfires are allowed if you want to sort your own nosh – ask Glyn or Philippa about hiring a fire basket – or you could have a meal at the award-winning Plough and Harrow pub two minutes' walk away.
Whichever you decide, take time for sitting back as dusk falls to listen out for the hooting of the local owls: Heritage Coast Campsite is in a wildlife haven too.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.
Large tents/caravans: check the restrictions on unit dimensions to ensure your unit is suitable for the space you will be provided with.

Heritage Coast Campsite is in the hamlet of Monknash three miles north-west of Llantwit Major.
Leave the M4 at junction 35, and follow the dual carriageway to Bridgend. At the fifth roundabout take the sign posted turning to St Brides Major (B4265).
About one and a half miles beyond St Brides Major, a signposted right turn leads to Monknash and Llantwit Major. Continue to the village of Monknash, follow the sign for The Plough and Harrow, take a right hand turn past the front entrance of The Pub, and continue down the lane for approximately half a mile.
Pass three cottages immediately followed by a stone wall signposted Heritage Coast Campsite, enter the drive and turn left into the campsite. Reception is on your right at the site entrance.
Coastal walks and beaches, museums and castles, and heaps of outdoor activities are all around to get stuck into.
If you want to stick to the coast – it's a heritage one after all – try out one of the local surf schools or some fishing nearby at Penarth Beach or Wick. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast runs for 14 miles from Porthcawl to Aberthawl and has some highly scenic walks as well as even more scenic horse rides to be had on its beaches.
Ogmore Castle and Fonmon Castle are two nearby sites to sort some Welsh history (as is the excellent St Fagans National History Museum a short drive away in Cardiff), and the National Trust's Dyffryn Gardens will be a good day out for green-fingered types.
Also nearby, look for the local karting centre; Taskforce Skirmish Paintball and a few rounds of Welsh golf; have a look through the Heritage Coast Campsite info leaflets to get you started.
