General

  • Countryside park a few miles from the Glamorgan Heritage Coast
  • Three miles from Cowbridge and 15 from Cardiff
  • Immaculate shower block with disabled access

Smile, you’re at Happy Jakes Touring Park! And we’ll tell you a few reasons for why. This lush little Welsh countryside park is peacefully placed in the countryside deep in the Vale of Glamorgan – but is only a few miles from the Blue Flag beaches, cliffs and coves of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, including seaside resort Barry of Gavin and Stacey fame: fans of Uncle Bryn, Nessa et al can book a Gavin and Stacey tour in the town to see the main tellyvisual sights.

Fifteen miles to the east lies Cardiff, capital for days and nights out, or you could contentedly base the family at Happy Jakes to coast around the local castles, bike routes, gardens and activities on/in land and water. That’s tidy, that is.

Family owners Mandy, Mark and (famous) Jake have been honing and adding to Happy Jakes Touring Park since opening in 2011, with disabled access high on the agenda: the wetrooms in the spick and span heated shower and loo block are big enough to take a wheelchair user and carer, or up to four family members.

There’s also a launderette, washing up area with hot water, tourist information room, and a dedicated dog walking/play area for dedicated dogs (who stay for free; happy woof).

Pitches are for tents, trailer tents, motorhomes and tourers: tents in the level centre of the park on seriously spacious open pitches; motorhomes, caravans and trailer tents along the park’s edge on roomy grass pitches with optional electric hook-up.

Looking for nosh and tipples to put an additional smile on your face? Pick up all sorts of fresh Welsh produce at the local farmers’ markets, farm shops and fruit farms. But if cooking on holiday is a thing to be avoided at all costs, Happy Jakes is three miles from ancient market town Cowbridge where hungry sorts will find over a few dozen pubs and restaurants.

From the manager...

Thank you for leaving your review. We are pleased that you found the facilities clean and tidy and the chirldren enjoyed the spacious play area.

We have stocked more produce in the reception room/shop in the past and had only a very small take up of the produce stocked. Therefore in view of sell by dates etc we tend to try and keep non perishable and popular items only such as the cold drinks, ice creams, sweets for the children, toiletries and basic coffee, tea etc. During busy periods we do stock some milk and bread.

We are a very rural location as indicated in the description of the site. However we are within 15-20 minutes of many lovely beaches, walks and towns which have a little something for everyone.

Tourist information is always available in the Foyer of the shower block and in the reception. We usually try and provide local information personally on arrival should we have been on site to welcome you on your arrival. We are always happy to provide tourist information or ideas of places to visit .... just ring the bell on the reception and if about we will pop out and see you.

Thank you for leaving your comments.

We note that you only scored 2 for facilities which if you were expecting a lot more to be on site would be understood.

Happy Jakes has been developed to provide wide open spaces with a play area where children can kick a ball or ride a bike and have a little freedom to explore which unfortunately is a difficult thing to give to children in this day and age.

Many of our campers really enjoy the fact that the children can go over to the play area without them as they can be seen from most of our caravan and tent pitches allowing Mum and Dad to relax and give the children that little bit of freedom and independence.

We hope you have many happy trips in your new motorhome

Lovely site, well laid out, easy signage on arrival to tell you where to pitch, clean washroom.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike but we visited mid-week & outside of school hols, not sure what it would be like in the height of hoilday season.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us.

As you say outside of Bank and School holidays things can be a little more peaceful.

However, even during these periods we look to manage our bookings in order to provide as near as possible a similar experience. Of course as a family site during school holidays the children do enjoy playing in the large play area and can be boisterous and sometimes a little noisy. So if you really do want a stay without to much laughter and fun from the children try us outside of school holidays.

Fine for a short weekend, clean facilities 15/07/2017

Friendly greeting upon arrival, separate parking slightly away from tent pitch area

    Disliked:

Limited size pitches, shower block closed in evenings/doesn't open early morning

From the manager...

Glad you found the facilities clean and tidy and had a friendly welcome.

We do keep the cars outside the tent area in order to ensure that all children in the tent area are kept safe from moving vehicles. The cars are place around the edge and only a short distance from most of the pitches. We do allow the vehicles to come on during extreme weather to provide a little protections for the tents.

The shower and toilet facilities are open throughout the evening and are not locked. However the main shower block may on very rare occasions be locked should the need arise. However the external toilets are always open 24 hours. During your stay they were open at all times. We have amended our welcome pack information to reflect this for future visitors.

Really pleased that you were Happy with your visit.

Our site has just 15 tent pitches and 30 Caravan pitches of which some are taken up by Seasonal visitors. So, yes we are not too large and with our extra large pitch sizes 14m x 14m you should have plenty of room to pitch your caravan, awning and car and still have room to chill in your own space.

Directions

Please note satnavs or maps may take you down a narrow route exiting at Junction 34. Please follow the instructions below.

From the east (Cardiff)
Leave the M4 at Junction 33 and follow the signs towards Cardiff International Airport. Then join the B4265 towards Llantwit Major.

Pass the petrol station on your left. Continue up a slight hill until you come to the junction for St Athan Village. Turn right at the monument and continue through St Athan passing the military base on your left (approximately 2.5 miles). You will see a brown tourism sign for Happy Jakes. Follow this sign and a further two before arriving at the site.

From the west
Leave the M4 at Junction 37 and follow the A48 towards Bridgend. At the traffic lights in Bridgend turn right signposted for Llantwit Major. Follow the road for almost seven miles, going through the villages of Ewenny, St Brides and Wick. Continue to the roundabout at Llantwit Major and go straight on. Go straight on at the next mini roundabout.

Go through the first set of traffic lights. Turn left at the next set of traffic lights and under the railway bridge. Continue for approximately two miles. At the junction, turn left onto St Athan Road where you will see a brown tourist information sign for Happy Jakes. Follow the next two brown signs turning left. (Do not take a left into the narrow lane at New Barn as it's not suitable for caravans).

Local attractions

What a fortuitous setting has Happy Jakes: close to castles and coast, parks and gardens, villages and vineyards, and active opps like surfing, horse-riding, golf and fishing… all alongside finding out what’s occurring in Barry.

Surf, canter, paintball, go-kart or have a coastal path amble along the nearby Glamorgan Heritage Coast running for 14 miles from Porthcawl to Aberthaw (paintballing and go-karting along clifftop paths not recommended).

There’s so much to see on this part of coast that even long-legged/fit people should take more than a day to do it: after the ruins and stepping stones of twelfth century Ogmore Castle, follow the pathway to the village of Merthyr Mawr backed by a maze of spectacular sand dunes, over 300 species of flower and the Big Dipper, the biggest sand dune in Europe – bring a sledge (really).

Two country parks are on the eastern part of the coastal path – Porthkerry Country Park near Barry and Cosmeston Lakes Country Park at posh Penarth seven miles from Cardiff.

Fancy fossil hunting? The nearby town of Llantwit Major is one of four in the Vale of Glamorgan (Barry, Cowbridge and Penarth are the others) and so ancient you can pick up Jurassic fossils on its Collugh Beach (which has an Iron Age hill fort too).

If you’re a surfer, the Collugh waves are a popular place; also get on board with things by veering west outside the Vale of Glamorgan to Porthcawl in Bridgend.

Have another couple of days in Cardiff to see sights such as Cardiff Castle and Llandaff Cathedral, the very fab open air National History Museum at St Fagans, the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, other city castles and all things Doctor at BBC Cardiff’s The Doctor Who Experience.

Doctor fans might also be interested to know – we certainly are – that Bad Wolf Bay is reachable from Happy Jakes too: it’s at Southerndown’s Dunraven Bay on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
