General

  • Countryside park a few miles from the Glamorgan Heritage Coast
  • Three miles from Cowbridge and 15 from Cardiff
  • Immaculate shower block with disabled access

Smile, you’re at Happy Jakes Touring Park! And we’ll tell you a few reasons for why. This lush little Welsh countryside park is peacefully placed in the countryside deep in the Vale of Glamorgan – but is only a few miles from the Blue Flag beaches, cliffs and coves of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, including seaside resort Barry of Gavin and Stacey fame: fans of Uncle Bryn, Nessa et al can book a Gavin and Stacey tour in the town to see the main tellyvisual sights.

Fifteen miles to the east lies Cardiff, capital for days and nights out, or you could contentedly base the family at Happy Jakes to coast around the local castles, bike routes, gardens and activities on/in land and water. That’s tidy, that is.

Family owners Mandy, Mark and (famous) Jake have been honing and adding to Happy Jakes Touring Park since opening in 2011, with disabled access high on the agenda: the wetrooms in the spick and span heated shower and loo block are big enough to take a wheelchair user and carer, or up to four family members.

There’s also a launderette, washing up area with hot water, tourist information room, and a dedicated dog walking/play area for dedicated dogs (who stay for free; happy woof).

Pitches are for tents, trailer tents, motorhomes and tourers: tents in the level centre of the park on seriously spacious open pitches; motorhomes, caravans and trailer tents along the park’s edge on roomy grass pitches with optional electric hook-up.

Looking for nosh and tipples to put an additional smile on your face? Pick up all sorts of fresh Welsh produce at the local farmers’ markets, farm shops and fruit farms. But if cooking on holiday is a thing to be avoided at all costs, Happy Jakes is three miles from ancient market town Cowbridge where hungry sorts will find over a few dozen pubs and restaurants.

Very lovely welcome to a clean, well presented site. I was given a nice pitch away from all the families as I was traveling on my own on a motorcycle and just wanted to get some sleep after a very long days riding.
Whenever I am back in South Wales I will be stopping by.

the site was clean, level ground, lots of space. the little one enjoyed the play area with swings slides etc. it is a family type park and so it was nice and pleasant. did not have unruly, excessive noise from young adults. it states quite time after 11pm which is what we liked as would not want to be on a site where people are allowed to make lots of noise after that time with younger adults. Mandy very helpful and accommodating. the toilet/shower block very clean and heated.

    Disliked:

There was not really anything bad. my only point we can make to improve the site is more toilets and showers. there is only one shower for the men and one for the women. There is just two toilets for the men and two for the women. granted there is two large family shower/toilet rooms as well which technically makes up an additional shower room and toilet but still, I would imagine it is quite a queue at busy periods. we were lucky and it was not too busy so there was not a problem with the toilet/shower situation but part from that, great place.

This was our second stay at Happy Jakes and it is a lovely site. Very accommodating as we thought we had booked an electric pitch with hook up but, going through our paperwork the day before we were due to arrive, we discovered that we had booked a non electric pitch but still booked an electric hook-up. Phoned Manby and she sorted it straight away.

Location is excellent for both seaside resort (Barry Island) and city center (Cardiff). I would recommend using the train for both bur especially Cardiff centre and the bay (£14 return for 2 people) as parking is expensive (£10 for 6hrs) add that to the price of petrol to get there. Added bonus of getting the train is its free to park at Llantwit Major.
Also great location for any Doctor Who fan as there is lots to see and do related to the doctor. Places to visit include Cardiff Bay (Ianto's shrine and Eddie's diner) Cardiff Castle (you can pre book a filming location tour) and the natural history museum of Wales.
Also Barry and Barry Island is where they filmed Gavin and Stacey!

Directions

Please note satnavs or maps may take you down a narrow route exiting at Junction 34. Please follow the instructions below.

From the east (Cardiff)
Leave the M4 at Junction 33 and follow the signs towards Cardiff International Airport. Then join the B4265 towards Llantwit Major.

Pass the petrol station on your left. Continue up a slight hill until you come to the junction for St Athan Village. Turn right at the monument and continue through St Athan passing the military base on your left (approximately 2.5 miles). You will see a brown tourism sign for Happy Jakes. Follow this sign and a further two before arriving at the site.

From the west
Leave the M4 at Junction 37 and follow the A48 towards Bridgend. At the traffic lights in Bridgend turn right signposted for Llantwit Major. Follow the road for almost seven miles, going through the villages of Ewenny, St Brides and Wick. Continue to the roundabout at Llantwit Major and go straight on. Go straight on at the next mini roundabout.

Go through the first set of traffic lights. Turn left at the next set of traffic lights and under the railway bridge. Continue for approximately two miles. At the junction, turn left onto St Athan Road where you will see a brown tourist information sign for Happy Jakes. Follow the next two brown signs turning left. (Do not take a left into the narrow lane at New Barn as it's not suitable for caravans).

Local attractions

What a fortuitous setting has Happy Jakes: close to castles and coast, parks and gardens, villages and vineyards, and active opps like surfing, horse-riding, golf and fishing… all alongside finding out what’s occurring in Barry.

Surf, canter, paintball, go-kart or have a coastal path amble along the nearby Glamorgan Heritage Coast running for 14 miles from Porthcawl to Aberthaw (paintballing and go-karting along clifftop paths not recommended).

There’s so much to see on this part of coast that even long-legged/fit people should take more than a day to do it: after the ruins and stepping stones of twelfth century Ogmore Castle, follow the pathway to the village of Merthyr Mawr backed by a maze of spectacular sand dunes, over 300 species of flower and the Big Dipper, the biggest sand dune in Europe – bring a sledge (really).

Two country parks are on the eastern part of the coastal path – Porthkerry Country Park near Barry and Cosmeston Lakes Country Park at posh Penarth seven miles from Cardiff.

Fancy fossil hunting? The nearby town of Llantwit Major is one of four in the Vale of Glamorgan (Barry, Cowbridge and Penarth are the others) and so ancient you can pick up Jurassic fossils on its Collugh Beach (which has an Iron Age hill fort too).

If you’re a surfer, the Collugh waves are a popular place; also get on board with things by veering west outside the Vale of Glamorgan to Porthcawl in Bridgend.

Have another couple of days in Cardiff to see sights such as Cardiff Castle and Llandaff Cathedral, the very fab open air National History Museum at St Fagans, the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, other city castles and all things Doctor at BBC Cardiff’s The Doctor Who Experience.

Doctor fans might also be interested to know – we certainly are – that Bad Wolf Bay is reachable from Happy Jakes too: it’s at Southerndown’s Dunraven Bay on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
