General

  • Peaceful site on the Afon Dewi Fawr river, two miles from St Clears
  • Friendly helpful team, firepits, picnic tables and spotless amenities
  • Birdwatching and stargazing haven

Small... but perfectly formed? If this is the style of site you fervently seek, you'll very much like Lakeside Leisure in Carmerthenshire. This lovely little site is regularly hailed by guests for its spotless amenities, excellent facilities and friendly team, all in a lush setting centred around a lake and bordered by the Afon Dewi Fawr river.

As you might reckon, this all makes for a mighty peaceful and rural setting suitable for all ages and tastes of holidaymaker to pitch up. It's in a wildlife haven too, where buzzards and kites often fly overhead and Canadian geese land on the lake – see how many of each you can spy during your leisurely picnic at one of the site's plentiful picnic tables.

And by night? Spark up your campfire or barbecue and lounge back under the dark sky; there's stargazing aplenty from your pitch too because of the area's lack of light pollution.

Although it's in a quiet and secluded spot, restaurants, pubs and a supermarket are within easy reach at St Clears two and a half miles away. It's a cinch to get to all sorts of south Wales attractions from here too: Laugharne and the Carmarthenshire coast are a short drive away and the outdoor activities of splendid Snowdonia National Park are within 40 minutes north west.

Please note

Facilities/activities including kayak hire are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The private and secluded island pitch is accessible by boat only. Please take this into account when booking.

Lovely site with minimal facilities 19/09/2018

It is a quiet, remote, beautiful location and close to neighbouring towns/amenities. We could choose where we pitched. Use of firepits for no charge is a bonus.

    Disliked:

It took me quite some time to make contact with the owner via telephone and only received a brief text back to say we could pitch anywhere.
Only 1 toilet and shower which was fine with just us on site but could be annoying if site was full.

Stayed on the private island. Was well covered so me and the group did actually feel cut off from the surrounding campers. We were still able to enjoy the lake and campsite around us.
The pitching space on the island was big enough for our tents with enough room for a seating area around a fire and an impromptu swing-ball area.
I would highly recommend staying on the private island for anyone who has the opportunity to.

    Disliked:

There is only one toilet and one shower, between 15 pitches. Advertised as having fire pits but there aren't enough to go around and they'd all already been baggsied by the time we got there.

Loved the tranquil, small campsite, the clean facilities and the fire pits. The sound of the stream running past the tent was calming. The layout of the pitches meant everyone had a good space between them. The location was great for visiting nearby beaches.

This is a lovely site for those wanting to get away from it all. 27/08/2018

  • Liked:

Peaceful surroundings, relaxed atmosphere. Lots of freedom for children to play. Within easy reach of some attractions, and plenty of wet weather activities in Carmarthen. Although toilet and shower is basic it is clean, and the water is hot.

    Disliked:

Entrance best approached from Meidrim as it is impossible the other way. Grass is long so wellies are needed. No phone signal.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
Due to the wet weather for the last two weeks cutting the grass has become a small issue and I can only apologise for the grass being slightly longer than it should be. I can assure you this will be rectified now we have a dry spell.
We hope you consider us for the future.
All the best

Lovely site, spacious pitches, by a stream and a beautiful lake with reeds and water birds. The road is quite near and fairly busy at times but the site is nevertheless a very peaceful place to be. Facilities were clean and well cared for and there was lots of hot water. Helpful and friendly staff on site.

    Disliked:

One toilet seems a little inadequate for the number of pitches and the washing facilities could do with a bit of improvement.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. During the winter months we will be working on updating the facilities ready for the spring. We hope you visit us again in the near future.

Local attractions

Stroll, cycle or drive the two and a half miles to St Clears on the River Taf to potter around the town's pubs or to take the free St Clears guided trail, a walk of a mile and a half guided by audio commentary (pick up handsets at the Gate on Pentre Rd from Monday to Saturdays).

From St Clears, it's five miles' or about 10 minutes' drive to Laugharne, famed as the last home of Welsh bard Dylan Thomas. The Dylan Thomas Boathouse, where Thomas lived for the last four years of his life, is now a visitor attraction and museum, and includes a tearoom said to have among the best afternoon teas in all the UK.

For active days, the seven-mile stretch of Pendine Sands beach (25 minutes' drive) is a top spot for surfing, kayaking and paddleboarding for all ages, while coasteering, archery, ziplining, caving, abseiling and other activities can all be sorted from Morfa Bay Adventure within the same distance.

If you'd rather soar above ground than go underneath it, the National Trust's Colby Woodland Garden (also 25 minutes) just over the border in Pembrokeshire has rope swings to monkey around on, as well as regular activities like campfire building and den building to try.

Must see

  • National Wool Museum (12.8 miles)
  • Pembrey Country Park (13.9 miles)
