General

  • Peaceful family campsite in west Wales and the Teifi Valley
  • Fishing pond and in a wildlife haven
  • Arts, crafts and farm activities available for children

Sick of wrestling the X-box from your little monkeys’ paws and chasing them out into the fresh air? Take them to talk to the animals at this fab and family-friendly south Wales farm site instead, or go along with your other half for some rural relaxation – the owners of quiet and secluded Dolbryn Caravan and Camping near Newcastle Emlyn in Carmarthenshire know what make all sorts tick.

For grown-up concerns, Dolbryn has a small fishing pond on site for a couple of hours’ chilling, or you could just wander around site and watch the wildlife: this is one of our ‘wildlife haven’ sites, with birds, fruit and flowers spottable around the valley, stream, ponds and hedgerows.

Small people have plenty laid on to keep them entertained, including arts and crafts events, helping to feed the chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs and goats every morning, and the Sticky Club for an hour on Sunday mornings in high season (under-eights must be accompanied by an adult).

The amenities at Dolbryn are well thought out: original and refurbished farm buildings with separate heated wash facilities for ladies and gents; a family room with disabled access, a large fridge freezer for guests’ use and a laundry room with two washing machines.

There’s also a small family bar with log fires, open at weekends and evenings in high season, and on Saturday mornings for coffee.

this is one of the best sites we've ever stayed on. Very family orientated, a small site that offers everything you need for all the family. A small holding that has the most adorable pigs, hens and goat which the children can feed every morning. Activities put on for the children during the week, a converted barn/bar where they hold quizzes and games that had a lovely atmosphere and everyone is welcomed in. Lakes (fishing) and fields to walk around, and a park for the children. Facilities are lovely and spotless and every need is catered for with a family room, showers, launderette and freezer and a games room. Very friendly, helpful and pro-active owners, this site is a little gem of a place.

Our recent stay at Dolbryn was amazing :)

This was our first time camping, as a family of myself, my husband, a 14 year old, a 5 year old and a 2 year old. On arrival check in was prompt. Access to the ready tent was immediately ready to unload our car. The campsite had a really good layout and parking next to the tent. Everything at the campsite was signposted clearly with easy access. The toilets and showers were extremely clean throughout our whole stay and at all hours of the day.

My 14 year old was impressed with the wifi access (as all teenagers do)

We felt safe at all times.

The stay at Dolbryn would certainly encourage me to return.

From our arrival up until our departure every moment here was pretty much perfect !
Everything you would want from a campsite, the hosts were very welcoming and the facilities were spotlessly clean.
A small shop on site from which you can purchase bread, milk, drinks and food and last but not least it has very quirky bar, the drinks are so cheap you feel like Dick Turpin.
Perfectly placed for us to use as a base to visit Cardigan, New Quay, Folly Farm and Tenby.
    We will definitely be back.

The animal feeding at 9am every day was a hit with the children and adults! Noah and Meredydd, pigs with very 'characterful' faces(!) were so lovable as was Malarky, the goat. Adorable rabbits, a hamster called Bandit and ex-battery hen chickens with great names were obviously well cared for and provide a few eggs at 30p each.
We enjoyed getting to the top field, Trem y Machlud (literally, 'view of the sunset') to see the sunset, and we weren't disappointed.
Clear and colourful noticeboards were very useful for site information: different cakes available on certain days, bara brith in the shop (yum!), chips every Wednesday evening, a surprisingly well stocked small shop at reception, fishing rods rented at £2.50 for a half a day.
There's a big fridge/freezer that campers can use for free; washing machines for £2.50 a time.
The kids loved playing pool for free in the teens room and fussball for 50p.
Sioned, Matt and their parents have succeeded in creating a real community atmosphere. It felt a privilege to be part of it for a little while :-)
    Diolch (Thank you)

    Disliked:

Hardly anything really. Maybe some extra wire mesh could be put into the ground near the central water tap in The Pines field for those more rainy days. There was a birds nest which was preventing the Teens Room corner seating area from being used; the cute 'Pots and Pans' washing up sinks sometimes had varying 'hot' water and some of the lily pads could be 'culled' from the fishing pond ;-) - but these are tiny things in an otherwise idyllic, well-ordered site.

From the manager...

Hi Elin and Family,
Diolch yn fawr iawn, very many thanks for taking the time to write a review, and for all the positive comments - we appreciate your kind words, and we're thrilled that you enjoyed our little site!
Thanks too for your feedback re: the teen room, the lillies and the hot water; funnily enough they are all points we know we need to address! Dad and I were in a boat on the pond yesterday chopping out some of the lillies (we managed not to fall in!). The teen room and the hot water system for our pots and pans are both projects that we have got ear-marked for this coming winter - we know they need a bit of TLC!
It was lovely to meet you all, and hope to see you again another time.
Diolch etc, thank you,
Sioned and all the team at Dolbryn :)

Directions

Turn south off the A484 in Newcastle Emlyn towards Capel Iwan. After the leisure centre turn left and follow the signs for two miles. The site is on the right after Bronygarn garage.

If you are using a GPS system please ensure that you go to Newcastle Emlyn and then to Dolbryn. Do not go via Capel Iwan (the village) as the route is very narrow.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Dolbryn's location is among award-winning beaches, coastal walks, fishing and more wildlife spotting, as well as waterfalls, steam railways, theme parks and family days out (the Welsh Chocolate Farm should be a sweet hit with anyone).

Start off on the doorstep at the market town of Newcastle Emlyn, on the River Teifi two miles from Dolbryn and with castle ruin, farmers’ market, shops and cafés; a leisure centre with indoor pool is nearby too.

The village of Cenarth, a few miles away on the borders of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, is famous for its small waterfall Cenarth Falls and for its salmon fishing. The National Coracle Centre, a museum devoted to the small traditional boats, overlooks the Falls along with the old flour grinder Cenarth Mill.

Heading coastwards, the coastal paths and beaches around west Wales could be combed for weeks: try the beaches of Newport Bay, Fishguard and Aberporth, porpoise and dolphin spotting around Cardigan Bay, home of one of only two pods of bottlenose dolphins in the UK.

At New Quay, find out all about it and arrange a marine wildlife spotting boat trip at the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, or plunge fully in and take a course at Cardigan Bay Watersports.

More modernly, there are theme parks and farm parks aplenty around here too: the white-knuckle rides at Oakwood Theme Park in Narberth is one of the most popular attractions in Wales, and the Dinosaur Park in Tenby has a maze, adventure playground and, natch, dozens of dinos.

If the kids have the wildlife bug after seeing the animals at Dolbryn, you can take them one of several country parks and animal attractions within about 25 miles: the funfair and animals at Kilgetty’s Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo; horse-riding at Pembrey Country Park, and gibbering with gibbons at Manor House Wild Animal Park.
