General

  • Scenic site steps away from the Offa's Dyke path
  • Pods on the bank of the River Alyn
  • An hour from Snowdonia with many activities close by

Bryn Dwr Camping Pods is a gorgeous site with just two well-maintained pods snuggled in dappled shade 50 yards from the Offa's Dyke path on the banks of the River Alyn, both with their own deck extending out over the water.

The pods have their own lighting and heating, with showers, toilets and dishwashing facilities just a short stroll away in the main house. There’s plenty of parking and safe storage for bikes.

Please note

As we are in the heart of the countryside and beside the river it is advisable to bring a torch, wellies and warm clothing for the evening.

We really liked the setting and nearness to trails and mountain walks. The pod was cosy and comfortable. Julie welcomed us warmly and provided us with comfortable matresses and the use of her kitchen and bathroom. We had a meal in the village pub which was very good. Altogether a very enjoyable stay.

Julie was so lovely & extremely helpful. Fabulous pods & site. Julie kindly lets you use her kitchen if you need to also the bathroom in her house off the kitchen. It's comfier than camping & fun. Stop moaning about her kitchen, it's lived in & it's very good of her to let people use it! We had very nice people in the pod next to us & enjoyed toasting marshmallows on the fire pit, thank you Julie x

We really enjoyed our stay in the pod. There are 2 pods at the end of the garden by a river, so the situation was lovely and we had some great neighbours. We enjoyed the use of the fire pit and with a little cafe just up the road breakfast was easy too. We were snug in the pod, but we knew we were going to be, with just enough room for 2 adults and our 17 and 14 year old children. We would happily recommend a stay here.

Location, hospitality, quality of the pods, equipment outside...

We lost the key of the pod in our car and had to bother Julie at 11 pm. She was very kind and gave us another key (the original key was found the next morning).

    Disliked:

Frankly, it was difficult to use the kitchen as untidy as it was. Julie told us that she was reorganizing it, but reading other comments, it might be something to take into account when packing gear and food. We just used the microwave oven the first night.

One of the beds was very bumpy (it had some pilows under the mattress to compensate the bumps). However, we do not complain about that as we didn't expect beds, but just mattresses.

We had a lovely night's stay at Bryn Dawr pods. The location itself is wonderful - nestled between a small wooded area and the banks of the river in the idyllic village of Llandegla - and very peaceful.

I wondered beforehand how it would quite work, with the pods in the owner's garden, but it does - the owner Julie has a guest bathroom which guests have access to with a code, and if you do not have bedding she provides you with mattresses, pillows, towels etc. We had brought sleeping bags but may not in the end have needed them. The pods themselves have a couple of power points, a heater and light, with a decking area, large benched table and garden chairs. We were lucky with the weather, so were not confined to the pods, and they have just enough room to sleep 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 small children.

Strictly speaking this isn't a B&B - the owner lets you have access to her kitchen but we used the community owned cafe/shop virtually next door which serves breakfasts. For evening meals the Crown pub is about ten minutes walk away. All in all, this was one of the most enjoyable nights of my time walking the Offa's Dyke Path - excellent value for money too.

Local attractions

Bryn Dwr is in the village of Llandegla, with lots of activities right on the doorstep, including stunning walks along the Offa’s Dyke Path, clay pigeon shooting, mountain biking, canoeing and fly fishing. At the nearby bird gardens in Pen-Y-Ffrith, you can watch the birdies while you meander among woodland streams, pools of trout, waterfalls and a lake and goggle at the lovely views of the Welsh landscape.

It’s an easy trip from here to the brilliant Chester Zoo, whose 110 acres are home to thousands of animals (and if it’s raining, you can always take the monorail tour).

Nearby Llangollen is lively even outside of Eisteddfod season, and well worth a visit too: daytrippers can take a short chug through the fresh green hills on the steam railway, or go for an old school narrowboat ride, pulled by a horse.
