Why visit Anglesey?

Spectacular coastline

As with most islands, the coastline is a huge draw in Anglesey. How you choose to explore it is up to you – you may like to settle down for family days at Anglesey’s best beaches (Rhosneigr and Benllech are a couple of popular spots – or you can check out our recommendations for Anglesey’s best beaches). Perhaps you’d prefer to place your focus on history and hikes with outings to atmospheric abandoned sites like Porth Wen Brickworks and Llanlleiana Porcelain Works. Or maybe you’d like to see the lot with a circuit of the 130-mile Anglesey Coast Path.

Unspoiled nature

Anglesey maintains a feeling of remoteness, despite the A55 and mainline trains making it actually quite easily accessible. This means it’s a real haven for nature lovers and wildlife spotters, who can head to the Anglesey Fens to look for water birds and rare orchids, or keep eyes peeled for red squirrels in Pentraeth Forest. There are lots of sea birds to spot around Puffin Island too, and you can head out there on a boat trip from Beaumaris.

Outdoor adventures

As well as the coast path, there are lots of options for hikes around Anglesey – a particularly spectacular area to explore is Parys Mountain, where you’ll walk through the colourful landscape left by a former copper mine. The coast also has several fabulous sea-view golf courses, along with more intrepid pursuits like coasteering. And of course there’s plenty of scope for water activities too – try the waves off the south west coast for surfing or the calmer Menai Strait for paddleboarding.

Essential things to do on Anglesey

  • Have a beach day at Trearddur Bay, which has a lovely long stretch of golden sand and rockpools to play in

  • Stroll around the grounds of Plas Newydd House and Garden to see gorgeous views over to Snowdonia

  • Head through the sand dunes and walk out to atmospheric Llanddwyn Island to pay your respects to the Welsh patron saint of love

  • Come face to face with seahorses, octopus, starfish and other native British marine life at Anglesey Sea Zoo

  • Head to the very west of the island towards the end of the day for a stunning sunset over South Stack lighthouse

Unusual things to do on Anglesey

A hidden castle

The great unfinished fortress of Beaumaris Castle grabs much of the glory when it comes to historic buildings, but there are several smaller places that are really worth the trip too. One of these is Aberlleiniog Castle, in a nature reserve a few miles further north and with a colourful history to explore, featuring Vikings, pirates and princes.

Ancient treasure

If you’d like to step back in time even further, take a trip to the Neolithic burial chamber Bryn Celli Ddu, a little way inland from Plas Newydd. It’s an unusual place in that visitors can actually venture inside the chamber rather than just looking from the outside. If you can, time your visit for the summer solstice – it’s the one day of the year when sunlight fills the chamber (an amazing feat of planning and construction 5000 years ago).

World-beating train station

Train enthusiasts, trivia fans and people with a penchant for silly words – who can resist stopping to snap a pic or two on the platform at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch station? This is famously the longest place name in Europe… although in fact it was created as something of a publicity stunt back in the 1860s by combining the names of two villages and the pond in between.

Here’s how

Deciding where to stay in Anglesey is an important part of planning your trip, and a campsite makes a great choice for soaking up even more of that fresh air and scenery the island is famous for.

There are some real bargains to be found too, whether you’d like to keep things simple with a traditional tent pitch or up the stakes by choosing an Anglesey campsite with a swimming pool? And we’ve got plenty of excellent spots for Anglesey glamping breaks too if you’d like to mix up your outdoor experience with a little more comfort.

Our tick box filters let you choose exactly the style and features you’d like for your holiday – some folk like a quiet adults-only site with fishing, others love the vibe of a bigger holiday park with evening entertainment. Use the filters to find just the one for you – or get a head start with some of our popular Anglesey campsite collections here…
