  • Pet-friendly site in Snowdonia National Park with landscaped grounds
  • A 10-min walk to Dolgellau; five mins’ drive to Mawddach Trail’s start
  • Barmouth beach and Coed-y-Brenin mountain biking within 20 mins' drive
Hiking boots at the ready: it’s time for a hol in the lush landscaped grounds of Tan-Y-Fron Holiday Park, a peaceful family-run place set in the southern region of Snowdonia National Park and a 10-minute walk from Dolgellau. This centrally located north Wales site is 20 minutes from the beaches of this bountiful area – like Barmouth, sitting in front of the Mawddach estuary where fishing, sea and estuary trips set sail from – and five minutes’ drive to the starting point for an hike along the Mawddach Trail, the tough 13.48-mile long path through low hills and fells. Another famed trek is to the peak of Cadair Idris, the bottom of which is 40 minutes away by car from the site. If you’re looking for more leisurely ways to while away the time, pack a picnic hamper full of produce from the supermarkets and small shops of Dolgellau and bimble over to the Cymer Abbey ruins less than 10 minutes away, where the kids can have dips in the clear waters of the river if the sun’s shining. Pets are welcome here and back on site, so you can easily bring your four-legged friend along for the ride. Plenty more old piles are in this historic area, with the remote Castell y Bere castle a 25-minute drive away and the better-preserved Harlech Castle sitting 40 minutes to the north west on the coast. Riding a bike more your thing? Hire a set of wheels in Dolgellau and zoom over to the trails at Coed-y-Brenin a 25-minute drive away.

Local attractions

If your tired toes are desperate for a paddle after taking on treks in Snowdonia National Park, the glacial lake of Tal-y-Llyn – where boating and fishing can also be pursued by active types among us – is a 15-minute drive away. You can also set forth for the shores of Aberdyfi (home to an excellent artisan ice cream shop) and Blackrock Sands 35 and 45 minutes away, or roam around closer sections of coastline including the dune-backed Fairbourne (20 minutes), next to the Blue Lake quarry where swims can be had in the bright blue water. For dry-land adventures, take a tourist train trip – the railways of Bala Lake, Fairbourne, Talyllyn and Corris are all about a 20-minute drive from Tan-Y-Fron Holiday Park.
