  • Award-winning and green site in Snowdonia National Park
  • Direct access to the Mawddach cycle trail and footpath

Whether you want to wander around on foot or pootle about by pedal power, we think you’ll find Graig Wen in Snowdonia National Park a wheelie good pick for activities and views…

This award-winning park’s accolades include a Green Snowdonia Award for most sustainable campsite and the Green Traveller Best Forest Escape 2013, and it has direct access through its fields to the Mawddach cycle trail and footpath, the waterside trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth shown off on telly by Julia Bradbury on the Beeb’s Railway Walks. And as the trail is only eight miles long, you’ll no doubt feel chuff-chuffed when you finish it – and after that, you can pedal to the pub on a bike hired from the Graig Wen team...

Those bringing their own two wheels have heaps to handle in the immediate area if mountain biking gears them up: the Cadair Idris mountain range is just behind Graig Wen and it’s about 15 minutes from the site to the mighty mountain biking centre and trails at Coed y Brenin forest.

Feeling faint at the very thought? Basking on the beach at Barmouth is five minutes away; the area around the site is a wildlife haven to spot owls, woodpeckers, buzzards plus a possible nightjar, and Graig Wen’s corner of Snowdonia National Park is peaceful enough that you can wander for miles and meet only sheep (do baa hallo; it’s only polite).

Back at base, it’s all pretty peaceful: tourer, motorhome and smaller tent pitches, many with views of the surrounding mountains and the Mawddach Estuary below; two yurts and a handmade wooden cabin among oak and silver birch trees, both with private firepit/campfire areas.

Guests looking for a really wild camping experience can leave the car at the main site and pitch on the site’s lower fields where campfires are permitted and there’s a composting loo available (just bring your best Scout mentality and be prepared for a rather steep walk to the main facilities, and to pass a fair few sheep who’ll be your neighbours during your stay). These fields, crossed by streams and edged by drystone walls, are worth the walk for some of the best views and wildlife spotting on site.

The excellent amenities include well-maintained and clean loos, new and free hot showers, a washing-up area and an honesty shop with local produce: take a picnic to one of the communal benches on site, also with wheelie stupendous views.
