  • Award-winning and green site in Snowdonia National Park
  • Direct access to the Mawddach cycle trail and footpath
  • Five minutes' drive from the beach at Fairbourne
Whether you want to wander around on foot or pootle about by pedal power… you’ll find Graig Wen in Snowdonia National Park an excellent pick for activities and views. This award-winning park has direct access through its fields to the Mawddach cycle trail and footpath, the waterside trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth. The trail is only eight miles long, so it's easily doable – but you should pedal to the local pub for a celebratory drink anyway (on a bike hired from the Graig Wen team if you don't have one to bring). Access to the Mawddach trail is very steep, so be prepped for both downhill rolling and the haul back up. Those bringing their own two wheels can be rightly geared up for some top mountain biking: Cadair Idris is just behind Graig Wen, and it’s 15 minutes' drive from the site to the mighty mountain biking centre and trails at Coed y Brenin forest. Feeling faint at the very thought? Basking on the beach at Fairbourne is five minutes' drive away. Guests looking for wild camping can leave the car at the main site and head down to the lower fields where campfires are permitted and facilities have been kept simple (just a couple of composting toilets and a couple of unisex showers). These fields, crossed by streams and edged by drystone walls, are worth the walk for some of the best views and wildlife spotting on site. The excellent amenities at the main site include well-maintained and clean toilets, free hot showers, a washing-up area and a shop with local produce: take a picnic to one of the communal benches on site, also with stupendous views. Takeaway breakfasts (coffee and croissants) are also available.

Stopover electric optional hardstanding campervan pitch (no awning)

Liked: Toilets were spotless and smelt lovely the views from the 2 pitches over looking the estuary are stunning , I had a flat pitch with hook up easily in reach , shop on site which I had no need to use and you can also buy books and ice cream from a sheltered cabin , steep walk down to the estuary with lots of other camping pitches

Disliked: I disliked the 2 shared showers and that the screens don't go from the floor to the ceiling and I can understand why people wouldn't use them I didn't like the position of the showers as well as I felt as I was on parade walking up the drive past the other accommodation

Empress shepherd's hut

Liked: I honestly can’t fault Graig Wen! I booked a glamping holiday for my dad’s birthday in late October 2023. It was just him, my dog, and me :) We stayed in the Empress quarry wagon and were so impressed by it! It was so warm, even without the heating on. Having the en suite was an added touch of luxury. We had all we needed kitchen equipment-wise and really appreciated the eco-friendly washing up liquid. I slept on the lower bunk bed which I found to be very comfortable. Overall, the wagon was welcoming, comfy and cosy. We were pleasantly surprised to find a “welcome spread” on the dining table upon arrival. The hosts had left a bottle of apple juice and 6 Welsh cakes with jam, both of which were locally-made! They’d also left a bar of salted caramel chocolate (made in Powys), some dog treats, and a welcome note with specific info for guests with dogs. The online info guide and info left on laminated printouts around the site were so helpful. The walk down to the Mawddach trail was very peaceful and scenic. About halfway down the path is a little uphill side-trail to a beautiful spot on a hill top- the bridge view! Because of the trees it was a bit difficult to see the full bridge but nevertheless a stunning setting for pictures, with a bench for a nice rest to catch your breath. It only took about 1 minute to climb the hill, but was fairly steep. The campsite was so well maintained, and all facilities were clean and tidy. We really liked that there were recycling and waste bins on site, tucked away out of sight but easy to access. Graig Wen was easy to find for us, but if you’re not looking the turning into the drive can sneak up on you a bit. Be sure to keep an eye on your sat nav or screenshot the directions in case you run out of mobile data! I’ll certainly be returning, and recommending Graig Wen to family and friends :)

Disliked: Not necessarily something we disliked but if you are with Vodafone or O2 you likely won’t have any signal on site. There is Wi-Fi available in the lean-to near the quarry wagons, though, and that was fairly strong- as long as you don’t stray too far. However, if you’re like us you’ll appreciate the lack of internet as you can get more engaged with the surroundings and stay present throughout your stay!

From the manager: Thank you so much for your thoughtful recommendation of staying in Empress wagon - that's really appreciated. So glad you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Stopover electric optional hardstanding campervan pitch (no awning)

Liked: Well what can I say, other than what a fantastic site. We hired a van for our travels up to north wales, arrived later than the latest check in. We called the campsite to let them know and it wasn’t a problem but they appreciated the heads up. Arrived in the dark, to wake up this morning to the most amazing views and scenery. The site overlooks the most beautiful lake and mountains, truly breathtaking. But what we really loved about this site was the impeccable service. We packed up ready to set on our travels again around 10.30am, only to realise we had a COMPLETELY flat tyre. With no pump to hand, we went down to reception to ask for aid, and they couldn’t have been any more supportive. Lots of reassure from the lady at reception even though it was passed check out time (really sorry we didn’t catch your name) and even gave us some recommendations for beautiful walks in the area while her husband rang around several tyre garages for us (most are shut on a Saturday). After finding us a garage with a tyre, he then followed us up to the van with a pump to help us. Once we got to the van, he could see that the tyre was completely blown and beyond repair. He then assisted us to jack the car safely and replace the burst tyre with the spare. Honestly cannot thank you both enough, you’ve literally saved our trip. Nothing was too much trouble. I’d also like to add that we tried giving the gentleman £10 (all the cash we had on us) as a thank you, but he would not take it and explained that they were happy to help. Honestly the best, most friendliest campsite to date and we will definitely be returning some day. Spacious clean toilets, beautiful campsite surrounded by breathtaking views and the friendliest staff who cannot do enough for you. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts ❤️

Route directions

For larger caravans and motorhomes, don't follow a sat nav, but follow these instructions instead. Approach from Dolgellau, turning off the A470 Dolgellau bypass at the junction signposted Tywyn/Fairbourne onto the A493. It is exactly 4.5 miles from the junction, on the brow of a slight hill on the right-hand side. Keep your eyes open for the sign, as the left turn from the Fairbourne direction can be difficult. By bike or foot: There is direct access to the site from Mawddach Trail. Use the signposted stile from the Trail about a mile east of Morfa Mawddach station, just after the large, concrete tank traps, or about tthree miles west of the George III pub. Walk about 600 metres up hill through a field, past a house then across another field and up a steep track through woods. Reception is at the furthest double glass doors on the side of the building nearest the road. By train: Morfa Mawddach station is 1 mile away with direct access along the Mawddach Trail. The Graig Wen team can arrange pick-up (including mountain bikes) or drop off at the station: please give them a call a couple of days before arrival using the contact details provided in your booking confirmation. By bus: Buses run between Aberystwyth/Machynlleth and Dolgellau (no. 28): ask the driver to drop you at Graig Wen between Penmaenpool and Arthog.

Local attractions

There’s sno lack of things to do in Snowdonia National Park as well as walking, cycling and mountain biking: scale the summit at Snowdon to the visitor centre for ideas (or take the steam train if you’re out of puff). Wildlife watching is all around too: have a squint at the RSPB reserve between Arthog and Friog, or take a trip into Coed-y-Brenin after mountain biking to get a glimpse of otters, deer, badgers and foxes. Beach horse riding is available within minutes of Graig Wen, and fishing and watersports at the beaches of Barmouth and Fairbourne: Barmouth Harbour is a popular spot to hire a boat for sea fishing trips, while Fairbourne is famed for its windsurfing and surfing. Start off at Fairbourne, as its Fairbourne Steam Railway puffs gently along from here to Penrhyn Point, where the passenger ferry leaves for Barmouth. Harlech, Portmeiron and the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth are all about 45 minutes’ drive away.
