Why visit Dolgellau?

Southern Snowdonia

Right in the thick of the southern section of Snowdonia National Park, camping in Dolgellau gives you access to exciting expeditions. Use the town and its surrounds as a base for scaling Penygader – the top of Cadair Idris, Wales’ second-largest peak – or take on less challenging hikes with views up to the mighty mountains of this splendid region.

Brilliant biking

Whether you want to cycle on a former railway line or go on mountain-bike adventures, Dolgellau campsites are prime for pedal pushing. Take a leisurely ride to Barmouth beach on the Mawddach Trail or zoom down the MTB paths at the world-class Coed-y-Brenin centre. The latter spot also has a high ropes course and a kids’ adventure playground. Slightly north are the slate quarry cycling routes of Antur Stiniog in Blaenau Ffestiniog, around half an hour’s drive

Stone-built splendour

When camping in Dolgellau, it’s likely you’ll want to stay a touch out of town in the countryside. But it’s worth venturing to the urban centre for a look at all the listed buildings – there are around 200, more than any other Welsh town. Park yourself at one of the pubs with outdoor seating to watch the world go by or dip in and out of the boutiques in search of a trinket to take home.

Things to do in Dolgellau

Aside from scaling mountains, there’s plenty to do in this former centre of Wales’ wool industry:

* Hunt for the mythical monster in the Llyn Cau lake

* Get distracted from a game at Dolgellau Golf Club by the Mawddach Estuary views

* Learn about the persecution of local Quakers at the heritage centre

* Try the instruments at Tŷ Siamas, the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music

* Have a picnic among the pretty ruins of Cymer Abbey

Gentle jaunts

Scenic strolls in southern Snowdonia include the Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk, the latter of which will get you views out over the Llyn Cynwch lake and the Mawddach River valley. And even if Cadair Idris’ 893-metre peak sounds too much of a challenge, you can still soak up the scenery by wandering halfway up the mountain via the Pony Path without having to huff and puff too much.

Ride on the railways

Chug through the local landscapes – without needing to figure out where to park – on the Fairbourne Steam Railway or the Talyllyn Railway, both of which are easily accessible from Dolgellau. The former runs along the coast, while the latter starts at the seaside and spins its way through the Cadair Idris foothills to Dolgoch Falls and the villages of Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol.

Family-friendly fun

Whisk the kids to King Arthur’s Labyrinth in nearby Corris for subterranean sailing trips with a side of storytelling. In Machynlleth, a half an hour drive from Dolgellau, there’s also the Centre for Alternative Technology, an immersive attraction that teaches visitors about sustainable living, clean tech and organic gardening. But the star of the space? A water-balanced cliff railway – one of the steepest on the planet.
