General

  • Family-run park over 11 acres
  • Views of the Snowdonia mountains and over Cardigan Bay
  • Public footpaths in the immediate surrounds

Crikey. It may be small, but the Welsh seaside town of Criccieth has a cracking array of active options around it for all sorts of hols: on beach, in sea, up mountain, down mine, on pony, with fishing rod/golf club, or criss-crossing the many miles of footpaths in the area… And not that the best thing of all is the famous Criccieth Cadwaladers ice-cream, but well, Cadwaladers ice-cream.

Criccieth lies on the scenic shores of Snowdonia, as do the 11 acres of nearby Eisteddfa Caravan Park, a family-run Gwynedd site with views on one side of the Snowdonia mountains and over Cardigan Bay to the other.

If you prefer to stay fairly local, a network of public footpaths crisscross the countryside immediately surrounding the park, the beach at Criccieth is 15 minutes’ walk away, and the town of Porthmadog is within three and a half miles; if not, Eisteddfa is on the A497 for easy access to days’ worth of other sights to see and things to do.

The clean and tidy amenities include toilet blocks, hot showers, a launderette and electric shaver points and sockets for hairdryers so you can look your best for a day’s sailing or mountain climbing; a new playground has also been added to keep the kids busy while you plot what you’re planning to see and do next.

Criccieth is the nearest place for supplies and has petrol stations, shops, pubs, cafés, restaurants and a post office.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

All parties including people aged 18-25 must pay a noise bond of £20 per head on arrival. This will be returned on departure if no disturbance is caused to other campers.

Lovely open area for tents. Lots of room. Facilities such as toilets, showers, freezers etc. were very clean and not too busy. Good location- great views of hills and sea. Town was walkable distance. Relaxing atmosphere.

    Disliked:

Some road noise on our field- but think it would have been better other field. We did choose to be at front for the view!

I must admit I booked this site originally because of the price. Our family stayed 6 days and having two young boys under 5 and a teenage girl of 15 we thought we would have our work cut out for us but how wrong we were. The campsite itself was well kept and toilets/shower block were immaculately cleaned twice daily. Its by far one of the cleanest, modern and highest quality toilet I have ever visited whilst camping. I honestly couldn't fault it. The owners were very pleasant and a fountain of information. The we!come pack gives loads of info on surrounding area and amenities as well as hospitals etc. The scenery is stunning and the only possible downside to our whole holiday was where we had chosen to pitch the tent. We chose the criccieth field as we felt it had the best views of both the sea and the mountains but the field was sloped and as such couldn't find a flat area to pitch the tent but honestly we couldn't have asked for a better holiday couldn't fault the site at all.

Quiet, rural location with fantastic views of the sea and surrounding mountains, yet a short distance from the beautiful town of Criccieth with its beach, cafes, shops and castle. A short journey in the opposite direction is Porthmadog with supermarkets, harbour and Ffestiniog railway. Site was clearly well maintained, including the wooded walk down to the facilities block. The lower facilities block is modern and clean. The 20p for 4 mins shower charge is not expensive but you need to bring a supply of 20p coins as we did or I think the office may provide change. Guests seemed to be respecting others and leaving the dishwashing areas clean. Late night noise was not a problem,
Despite staying over a bank holiday weekend. The owners were friendly and helpful. Checkout time for the upper tent pitches was relaxed which is helpful when you are trying to pack up and keep 2 young children occupied. The adjacent fishing ponds and cafe was good, especially with families being able to turn up, hire equipment and fish. Our 7 year old had his first go at it!

    Disliked:

On the upper tent site it was difficult to find a level pitch but this was more than offset by the fantastic views. The ice block freezers in the lower facilities block were rammed over the bank holiday weekend that we were there, the bottom silver freezer was not cold enough to freeze our blocks overnight- was displaying -9 degrees the first night tried to use it at didn't go much lower during our stay. Kids play facilities were a bit basic in comparison to some other sites we've stayed at but we're in good condition. Games room had a table football and pool table with just one cue. I didn't use either as no prices were displayed. A minor comment is that a small shop sticking some basics would be an improvement.

after seeing the forecast for the weekend we asked if we could change from Saturday to Friday and they did which was really helpful and kind from them because they didn't have to do it. The location is beautiful. The views are stunning of the coast and the mountains. It's really easy to get to and the facilities are very clean and very high standard.

Directions

The site is 3.5 miles from Porthmadog and 1.5 miles from Criccieth on the A497.

Come into Porthmadog and at the roundabout, turn on the A497 towards Criccieth. Follow this road for 3.5 miles, through Pentrefelin. Take the first right after the Plas Gwyn nursing home to Eisteddfa Caravan & Camping Park. Take the first left into the park and the reception is on your left.

Local attractions

After sampling the first lot of Cadwaladers ice-cream at Criccieth, make for mighty thirteenth century Criccieth Castle, set on the headland overlooking Tremadog Bay, Snowdonia to the north and across the entirety of the Llŷn peninsula to the west (you’ll see the castle towering above the town as you drive into Criccieth). Cadw, which now manages the site, has added info on it and other Welsh castles, a visitor centre and gift shop.

As you’ll see when peering down from the headland beside the castle, Criccieth also has two rather smashing beaches: the sandy beach of East Shore to the, er, east, and pebbly Marine Beach to the west. Sea angling can be had at both: mackerel, bass, whiting and dogfish are good bets from either side and anglers also wrestle pollock, conger and evening mackerel from the stone jetty under the castle.

Walk west from Marine Beach towards Pwllheli, the Llŷn Peninsula’s main market town and with another two sparkingly clean beaches, an open air market on summer Wednesdays and Saturdays, and a long promenade with play area and skate park.

Should you be inclined to amble further, Pwllheli is on the 91-mile Llŷn Coastal Path and has a further walk to Caernarfon (21 miles) and its first-class castle, which is a bit of a must-do. (And if you really want to walk further, the Llŷn Coastal Path joins up with the 2012-opened Wales Coast Path, an 870-mile trek from Chepstow to Queensferry.)

Eisteddfa guests might also be chuffed to know there are a few steamy options in this area for railway fans: the Cambrian Coast Line stops at Criccieth and goes to Pwllheli in one direction and onto Porthmadog (two stops), then Harlech and Barmouth in the other.

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways line can be picked up at Porthmadog for a seriously scenic trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog; the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis will puff you sedately up to Snowdon’s peak via viaducts and a waterfall; and the Welsh Highland Railway steams along a 25-mile route from Porthmadog to Caernarfon.

The more subterraneanly inclined can take a journey underground at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns about half an hour’s drive from Porthmadog and near the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, or delve into Bronze Age times at Llandudno’s Great Orme Copper Mines, telling the tale of mining ancestors 4000 years ago and thought to be the biggest prehistoric mine discovered so far in the world. Deep.

For other trips and active days out, Eisteddfa guests will find themselves niftily placed for roams around the odd and Italianate village of Portmeiron, gazing Hell's Mouth in the face from a surfboard at Porth Neigwl beach, and windsurfing, jetskiing and sailing nearby at the waters of Abersoch.
