  • Family-run park over 11 acres, 15 mins' walk from Criccieth beach
  • Views of the Snowdonia mountains and over Cardigan Bay
  • Public footpaths in the surrounds; Porthmadog three miles away
Crikey. It may be small, but the Welsh seaside town of Criccieth has a cracking array of active options around it for all sorts of hols: on beach, in sea, up mountain, down mine, on pony, with fishing rod/golf club, or crisscrossing the many miles of footpaths in the area… And not that the best of all these is the famed Criccieth Cadwaladers ice cream, but well, Cadwaladers ice cream. Criccieth lies on the scenic shores of Snowdonia, as do the 11 acres of nearby Eisteddfa Caravan and Camping Site, a family-run Gwynedd site with views on one side of the Snowdonia mountains and over Cardigan Bay to the other. If you prefer to stay fairly local, a network of public footpaths crisscross the countryside immediately surrounding the park, the beach at Criccieth is 15 minutes’ walk away, and the town of Porthmadog is within three and a half miles; if not, Eisteddfa is on the A497 for easy access to days’ worth of other sights to see and things to do. The clean and tidy amenities include toilet blocks, hot showers, a launderette and electric shaver points and sockets for hairdryers so you can look your best for a day’s sailing or mountain climbing; a playground has also been added to keep the kids busy while you plot what you’re planning to see and do next. Criccieth is the nearest place for supplies and has petrol stations, shops, pubs, cafés, restaurants and a post office.

Local attractions

After sampling the first lot of Cadwaladers ice-cream at Criccieth, make for mighty 13th-century Criccieth Castle, set on the headland overlooking Tremadog Bay, Snowdonia to the north and across the entirety of the Llyn peninsula to the west (you’ll see the castle towering above the town as you drive into Criccieth). Cadw, which now manages the site, has added info on it and other Welsh castles, a visitor centre and gift shop. As you’ll see when peering down from the headland beside the castle, Criccieth also has two rather smashing beaches: the sandy beach of East Shore to the, er, east, and pebbly Marine Beach to the west. Sea angling can be had at both: mackerel, bass, whiting and dogfish are good bets from either side and anglers also wrestle pollock, conger and evening mackerel from the stone jetty under the castle. The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways line can be picked up at Porthmadog for a seriously scenic trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog; the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis will puff you sedately up to Snowdon’s peak via viaducts and a waterfall; and the Welsh Highland Railway steams along a 25-mile route from Porthmadog to Caernarfon.
