General

  • Family-run farm on the edge of Snowdonia National Park
  • Donkeys, llamas, chickens and more to see on site
  • Well-known walking country with hundreds of acres direct from the farm

Off to Wales to wander? Pitch up at superbly scenic Tyn Yr Onnen Farm, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park between the Moel Eilio and the Elephant Mountains (Mynydd Mawr), for a hiking holiday you won't forget.

Keen-footed wayfarers of all abilities can wander hundreds of acres of heathland direct from the farm including a route right up to Snowdon's peak – although if that thought makes you pale, the Snowdon Mountain Railway with its more relaxed summit accessing is only a few miles away.

Guests also travel to Tyn Yr Onnen Farm and this part of north Wales for the coastline and beaches of the Llŷn Peninsula and the Isle of Anglesey within easy driving distance, and to get down with Wales's mighty heritage at the likes of the National Slate Centre and the castles of Harlech, Caernarfon, Bangor, Beaumaris, all nearby.

On site, llamas, donkeys, pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys and newborn lambs in spring inhabit the farm for the kids to coo at: Tyn Yr Onnen is a working 180-acre sheep farm managed by the Griffiths family for over 300 years. Pitches are sheltered, with loads of room for barbecues, and campfires are allowed in one of the camping fields.

The kids can entertain themselves at the play area with sandpit, or in the TV room with table tennis and pool table if the weather's a bit misty (parental supervision required at all times, of course), while the grownups should be chuffed at the clean and modern amenities in the refurbished toilet and shower block, with free hot showers, baby changing, disabled facilities and a utility room with washing-up area, campers' fridge and freezer, washing machines and tumble drier.

The local village, Waunfawr, is within walking distance and has a village shop open daily, as well as a pub serving the type of good food you want after a hike.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Great site I will be back! 22/10/2017

So I stayed at this site for the first time in 1976 training for a fell race and have loved it and visited it numerous times over the years. As I arrived I was greeted by chance by a person I was with in 1976 who was with his children and grand children who has also been back numerous times over the years.
That says it all, if you want to explore, walk cycle around and have great views then this is the place. The showers and toilets have been improved since my last visit and were excellent.
The pub is maybe 12 minutes walk, and if you have the energy you can walk out of the campsite onto the hills and get to Snowdon via the Ranger path. Best catch a bus back though! Nothing not to like as far as I am concerned helpful reception and no issues with booking.

    Disliked:

The pitches are not flat so just be prepared to use blocks, not that this is a major issue.

A great little weekend break, very quiet with great facilities and clean. Beautiful scenery with many walks close by. Clive is very helpful and freindly, and only 10 min drive from Caenarfon. Lovely to stay on a working farm and see the animals. I didn't catch the farmers name, but he was very nice and told us everything about the animals and about the history. If you are staying on the top feild you will have a great view of Elephant mountain, be sure to take some carrots for the donkeys, they will be outside the pod waiting for you to wake up. We had the pod in the top feild with a play area (swings etc) games room (table tennis, pool and tv and free WiFi) very clean toilet and shower block and well equiped utility room (3 sinks, washing machine and drier and microwave). A brick bbq and fire pit was outside the pod and the reception provided firewood etc and even Marshmallows. You can buy sausages, bacon and steak from reception. The weather was rotten while we were there but we still enjoyed the stay and will hopefully be staying there again in the spring during lambing season. Thankyou Tyn Yr Onnen farm for a great stay.

very good site and with very great facilities. All you need really. Clive was very helpful and showed us around the site and helped us chose an ideal pitch for our tent.

This is a good location and Snowdonia is within easy reach and Beddgelert is just down the road and Caernarfon a short drive away.

The shower block and facilities were functional and the kitchen area to wash up your pots and pans is great.

Thank you for a great stay.

We booked 3 nights camping in September through pitchup.com a week before which was easy to do. We had a couple of questions that Len answered quickly via email. On the evening we arrived we were late having got stuck in traffic. we were meant to have arrived by 9pm. We spoke to Len via phone who gave directions and assured us it wasn't a problem.

It is a mixed camp site with tents and caravans in separate fields. There was plenty of space to pitch as there were only a few other tents. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean throughout our stay with hot water. There was a good kitchen area with fridge and microwave. There was a games room with table tennis and pool.

We were greeted in the Morning By Darren who was a really friendly helpful guy, made good recommendations for good local pubs!

The site on the last morning was really beautiful once the rain and clouds had lifted. It is a quite sight being accessed by a long narrow lane.

    Disliked:

The only negative was the another group came and pitched very close by and were quite noisy on our last night, but not a reflection on the site.

I stayed in the cabin with 5 other males on a lads weekend. It was isolated from the main campsite, which was good as we made as much noise as we wanted to without disturbing other guests. It had its own gated area park upto 3 medium size cars.

It was almost perfect if it could split the double beds into single. It had 3 bedrooms with 2 double and a single. Also was a double futon. However we camped in the living room to spread out. If it had two more rooms it would have been perfect.

The campsite facilities could be used, which are very clean and new looking. However these are too far form cabin. The cabin it self can cater for up to 7 people. But the double beds are too small for sharing. Again single beds would be better. The cabin had a lot of animal hairs which was inconvenient due to allergies suffers in the party. But other than this no complaints just nip-picking.

It was ideal setting for walks.

We really liked this site and would return without question.

Taxi ride into town was £10.00 for a single trip.

Was met by Darren on site and he was a star. Very helpful and rescued lost mobile phone. Cheers Darren.

There is wifi near the office but non in cabin. For me this was good as the whole point is to get away from all that. So don't put wifi there please.

    Disliked:

Can't really fault this place. But if we was going to do more on site we would say the games room was a little poorly maintained.

Games room poorly equipped. (Should allocate good equipment on a deposite and refund on return).

Being told to leave the games room at 10pm but was in the games room the night before till 0100 the night before?!?!?

Could do with a dart board.

Recommend to pack table tennis bats and ping-pong ball or pool que. otherwise you can ignore the comments above.

Absolutely everything about the site is just wonderful!
I arrived just after a huge storm - I'd originally planned to camp in a tent, but was advised against it due to the atrocious weather. Clive was great, really made sure I'd be comfortable during my stay, and I was really grateful for his advice, especially due to the nature of my visit (family funeral).
The views from the Onnen Pod are spectacular, and I can only imagine how lovely it is when the weather is better! It was a joy to wake up and look out over Mynydd Mawr and the surrounding area. The local pub was great for food - huge portions and very good value for money.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend the site, and will definitely be returning - hopefully without the stormy weather!!!
Thank you for a great couple of days!

Directions

Just off the A4085 between Caernarfon and Beddgelert is the village of Waunfawr. Look for the Skoda garage on the right, pass this and then take the third left. If you pass a church on the right or reach the bridge over a river then you have gone too far. The campsite is on your left about a kilometre from the main village road.

Local attractions

The surrounding area has heaps to see and do alongside the rambles, coastlines and castles: if you get a bit stuck for choice, ask the family for their top picks. Within a short drive are Surf Snowdonia in Conway, Zip World in Bethesda (home to Velocity, the fastest zipline in the world and the longest in Europe), the treetop nets of Bounce Below, Zip World Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog and GreenWood Forest Park a family adventure park in Y Felinheli.

Rather conveniently, one of Wales's top attractions is less than five miles from Tyn Yr Onnen Farm, the National Slate Museum in Llanberis, where kids can get stuck into the story of the country's mining heritage amid talks and demos, quarrymen's houses and interactive play activities.

Llanberis village is where many set out to climb Snowdon as the Llanberis Path begins here, winding up the least taxing route (we'll point out again that the Snowdon Mountain Railway goes to the top too). The village is also a popular place for adventurous activities like kayaking, coasteering, scuba diving, mountain biking, pony trekking and high ropes courses.

Another popular pull of these parts is the Dinorwig Power Station or Electric Mountain: take an underground tour, set the kids free to play in the den, or test your wits in the Genius Corner puzzle room.
