General

  • Spacious site a few minutes' drive from the Snowdonia mountains
  • A short drive from the coast
  • Covered picnic area, communal bbq, den building and woodland dog walk

This Snowdonia site is a beaut. And so say the generations who've returned to Riverside Camping near Caernarfon in Gywnedd season after season: you'd be hard pressed to pin down just the one reason why, but it'd probably have something to do with peaceful riverside pitches among lots of open space.

And the friendly helpful team, and the many little additions like free wifi, a splendidly-sized undercover picnic area, a volleyball and badminton court, and mini grass football pitch… yes, that's several reasons, but after all, this site is a beaut...

Riverside Camping is in a sheltered loop of the River Seiont that's proved most suitable for fishing, birdwatching, boating and paddling, surrounded by woodland for yet more holiday adventures (short woodland dog walks are accessible on the site).

Apart from its riverside location, the site's setting is also a beaut: a few minutes' drive from the mountains of Snowdonia, two miles from mighty Caernarfon and less than six from the coast. Steel-blooded campers also use Riverside as a base for the Slateman Triathlon and Snowdon Race in Llanberis five miles away, or for mountain biking, watersports and many other heady north Wales activities in the region.

Other thoughtful touches (there are many) are the kids' playground in the middle of the site; pocket-money toys (and sweets, drinks, ice cream and tourist info) in reception; a mini playhouse and a colouring table for the kids; a launderette and a freezer for ice packs; and undercover table tennis and pool to partake of on rainy days. The hot showers on site are free and include family and disabled facilities.

Riverside Camping also has an onsite bistro, The Mill, serving meals using local ingredients, light lunches, snacks, wine, local ales and Welsh breakfasts including laver bread to fuel stomachs before a hike up/race down the nearest mountain. The nearest shop is about a mile away and plenty of pubs, takeaways and restaurants are at nearby Caernarfon.

Dogs are welcome at Riverside, as are group bookings – time to gather your crew for a Welsh riverside stay and a hike to the Snowdon summit…?

Perfect! I wouldn't go anywhere else after Riverside Camping. I received a very friendly welcome. The site is stunningly beautiful, and the river runs all around the perimeter so there is no problem picking the perfect spot.
I didn't get chance to visit the Bistro myself, due to other commitments, but I heard nothing but rave reviews about the quality of the food and great choice. Definitely one for next time!
Showers, toilets etc were spotless, and the showers are included in the price (saves all the messing collecting 20 pences etc).also, the on site shop is very handy.
The family business is well run and they should be very proud.

    Disliked:

There is honestly nothing I can say here. Perfect. Thank you very much. See you in a few weeks.

Sheltered riverside location in a valley. The drive from the entrance to reception is very welcoming with the well tended planting. The welcome continues at reception, we were personally shown to our pitch which was near the play area as requested at booking but also next to the river. The river just attracts children's interest. While we were there it was fairly slow flowing and safe to go in but you need to keep an eye on the little ones especially non swimmers if they are in dinghies as there are a few deep spots. The atmosphere was very friendly and we had no problem with late night noise. The play facilities were good as we're the washing and toilet facilities which were cleaned regularly. We had no queuing during our stay. The free ice block freezing facility was a nice touch.

    Disliked:

The bistro breakfast was good value but there were rather a lot of flies in the building. Perhaps there could be some warnings about the dangers of the river (I didn't see any).

We loved it. The location is beautiful, many of the pitches are right by the river, it is very clean and peaceful. There were a lot of young children playing games, having fun, but so much space that this should not disturb anyone. it is dog-friendly but totally safe because all dogs are kept on leads and there is a dog walk area for them to do their business. The staff were friendly, and there is a personal touch. People put their cars by the entrance so it does not feel crowded with cars. Finally, there is plenty of sheltered space should anyone have a leaky tent! I hope we will go back.

Park, size of pitches, friendly staff. Especially liked the covered area in case of bad weather, the volleyball and basketball court were a nice touch too.

    Disliked:

Weather but the campsite owners obviously can't be blamed for that. They more than adequately provided amenities in case of bad weather.

Right in the middle of the best north Wales has to offer. Snowdon is just around the corner, Black rock sands is only 40 minutes away. Campsite facilities are modern and always clean, toddlers play area is good and the park is also well equipped to keep them occupied. As dog friendly as hoped and well enough provisioned to accommodate without affecting others. River does pose a flood risk so pitches can be moved around depending on weather but if you pick the right week with no rain you couldn't choose a better sight. Will be going back!

    Disliked:

Nothing really. Cant blame the weather.

Riverside camping is for tents.Beautiful pitches if you are in a tent.Disappointing if you are in a caravan or campervan as there are no hardstands or electric hook ups next to the river. If you are in the latter then it is just Camping.Otherwise can't fault the location or facilities.

    Disliked:

Only the weather. It rained all day.Being next to the river would have made all the difference.Thats why I think Riverside Camping is a bit misleading and discriminates against anything on wheels.

Lovely clean site. Stayed at pitchup for caravans at a lovely spot
Very good for dogs as there was walking areas for them. loved the river.
    Beautiful location.
    Friendly staff and very helpful.
Looked like there was things to do for families
I.e. tennis court. Badmington football. Children area .Able to rent out bbq items.

    Disliked:

Although there was a bistro not open everyday. This may be due to not being in season.
Poor tv signal but this is probably due to location but could rent a cable to hook up. This I think is only for the deluxe pitchup though and not available for all pitchup e.g tents

Local attractions

There's simply stacks to do around here as well as Snowdonia mountains walks and climbs, like the beaches and coastline of the (also beaut) Isle of Anglesey and the Llŷn Peninsula, nature spotting, getting active on land or water, or investigating centuries' worth of Welsh history at nearby castles, museums and mines.

The best known attraction of ancient and royal Caernarfon a couple of miles from Riverside Camping is ancient and strapping Caernarfon Castle, but you should/must also make time for its old and lovely pubs or for crabbing from the harbour walls; wherever you end up in this scenic city, take many photos.

North Wales is steam railway country, so if you don't fancy getting to Snowdon's summit (Copa'r Wyddfa) under your own steam, take the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the peak instead from its base at Llanberis.
The Welsh Highland Railway puffs the 25 miles from Caernarfon to Porthmadog (you should make many pub pitstops along the way) and the Llanberis Lake Railway on Tomos Bach is a good option for younger children.

Other faves of the Riverside Camping team are the newly opened Beacon Climbing Centre two minutes' drive away; Colwyn Bay Zoo and RSPB Conwy; Anglesey Sea Zoo; the free Llanberis Slate Museum and the leafy expanse of Greenwood Forest Park.
