Why visit Abersoch?

Fabulous beaches

Abersoch’s popularity is mostly due to its lovely main beach, which has gently shelving sands and calm waters that make it a top pick for a family beach day. This sheltered location also makes it a great spot for watersports like paddleboarding or launching kayaks. On top of that, there are also two other equally attractive beaches – Quarry beach and Town beach – so you should never be short of space on the sand or in the sea. And how about maximising your seaside time by booking an Abersoch campsite by the beach?

Scenic walks

The Llŷn Peninsula is often referred to as ‘Snowdon’s arm’ so it’s no surprise to hear that, in common with its mainland neighbour, it too has some fine walks to offer. Most of the routes around Abersoch are rather gentler than those in Snowdonia’s peaks, but there are still uphill challenges at the likes of Carn Fadryn (371 metres). For more ideas, the town’s tourist office has six suggested circular routes (from one to eight miles) and the Wales Coast Path passes by too.

Nature and wildlife

All the lovely scenery around Abersoch also means plenty of opportunities to look out for wildlife – both on land and out at sea. While you walk, look out for badgers, rabbits, weasels and buzzards – and if you’re on the coast path, look down to the rocks for basking seals or out into the waves for passing dolphins. A real treat for nature lovers is the trip to Bardsey for several hours exploring the island’s wildlife and history.

Essential things to do around Abersoch

  • Take your surfboard to Hell’s Mouth beach (Porth Neigwl) – or just find a quiet spot and watch the crashing waves

  • Cross the peninsula for a walk in Porthdinllaen and a pint at the famous Tŷ Coch Inn, right by the beach

Unusual things to do around Abersoch

Hear natural music

Over on the west of Llŷn Peninsula, about 25 minutes’ drive from Abersoch, is an unusual thing indeed – a beach that sings! The specific sand quality at Porthor means that it squeaks or whistles when the grains rub together in warm weather – giving it the nickname ‘Whistling Sands’. Visit on a hot summer’s day and you’ll find people joyfully stamping or running around to create their own seaside symphony.

Meet the tin man

Take a walk up the headland from neighbouring Llanbedrog and you’ll meet the famous tin man sculpture, looking out over spectacular views of Cardigan Bay towards Snowdonia. The three-mile route is fairly straightforward, running through pretty woodland, and rewards you with wonderful views on a clear day.

Bounce on ‘The Blob’

If you’ve ever watched Total Wipeout on TV and thought you might like to have a go, here’s your chance. Glasfryn Parc, 20 minutes’ drive from Abersoch, has a floating obstacle course to scramble your way across – a highlight being ‘The Blob’, a giant inflatable pillow you can jump on to propel your friends through the air and into the water.

Here’s how

As well as being a fabulous place for fresh-air activities and gorgeous scenery, the Llŷn Peninsula also makes a great location for an outdoor break. Abersoch campsites come in all shades, from simple farm pitches to smarter options with lots of facilities.
