  • Four miles from the beaches and funfairs of Rhyl and Prestatyn
  • Excellently-kept amenities and plenty of tourist info on site

One of the newbies, St Asaph in Denbighshire, is home to just three thousand people if you’re curious about this tiny gem, come to Penisar Mynydd Caravan Park, where you’ll be perfectly placed to join in any right royal knees-up that might still be going on in St Asaph, and to visit the classic Welsh coastal resorts of Prestatyn and Rhyl.

Penisar Mynydd Caravan Park is a peaceful rural site with well-kept pitches and with amenities kept to high standards by the friendly helpful team. There’s a great range of tourist information available on site to help you make the most of the local area.

You’ll find a handful of shops, including a convenience store, butcher and chemist in the nearby village of Dyserth (don’t miss out on a stop at the stunning Dyserth waterfalls while you’re there).

From the manager...

Very occasionally, mid week, we do have Duke of Edinburgh groups , perhaps 5 or 6 nights of the year. The day you came we had tremendous thunder storm and rain, the likes I have never seen before. The children all aged between 15 and 16 years had to call off their training to get away from the lightening and torrential rain. They had not had time to erect their tents so sheltered for perhaps one hour in the toilet facilities under the supervision of Duke of Edinburgh trainers and school teachers. Sorry if this has been an inconvenience for you, although we have not had any other negative feedback. I will continue to take Duke of Edinburgh groups as I think this is good training for these children and for later on in their lives. If my children chose to do these courses I would be highly delighted as I would rather them be doing something beneficial rather than them loitering on the streets.

Site was really clean and tidy and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. Lovely views of the hills. The site quietened down nicely at 11pm even though it was very busy that weekend

    Disliked:

Perhaps unlucky in picking a spot which backed onto farmyard with cockerel that welcomed in the new day with some gusto, however we were used to it by the second night. Will clearly vary according to when the sun rises. As regular campers this is a small gripe as other sites have heavy traffic nearby.

Watch out for sat nav getting confused. I had checked maps beforehand so found the site with no trouble but the sat nav wanted to take a different route

Close, easy links to north Wales attractions
Easy to locate off the A55
As we arrived early on the Friday, we were able to select our pitch - which was great (the later you arrived it seemed choice was drastically reduced)
    Clean and tidy site
we were lucky and had nice 'tenting' neighbours...

    Disliked:

Patents got charged for visiting for an hour, admittedly this may have been a mix up TBC
clear defined pitches would make things easier. We found that a number of people (including ourselves) had to organise space to ensure everyone had some room. not so much an issue for us but noticed others struggled.
Not a great deal of room for children to play as a number of caravans were parked in the middle of the field. I can only assume that they were there to make space for visitors in the caravan pitches but this reduced the room for the tenting families.
We did hear that there was some trouble late on Saturday evening, this did not bother my family but felt sorry for families closer to the trouble - I have no issue with people having a drink and being sociable but keep it in check when there are families and especially children about! Not a slight on the site just the people concerned.

From the manager...

All our prices are advertised on pitch up, on our website, in the office window and on our invoice which everyone gets. If people come as visitors how do I know if they are staying for 15 minutes or over night. You saw our pricing structure on pitch up before you booked, don't bring people to this campsite if you don't want to pay for them. If everybody bought two visitors with cars to the site that could be potentially 500 people per day not paying. I would like to hear from any other caravan parks or yourselves if you have any better ideas. I have been doing this for 16 years now and this is the fairest way I see to deal with visitors. The only other way I think it could be dealt with is if we charged ALL PAINTENTS more money but then that would be unfair for people with out visitors. I look forward to how you are going to over come this problem for me, you have my telephone number and email address.

Regards Graham

Very nice lady owner she gave us a credit note which we gave away because we'd never return.

    Disliked:

    Overcrowded
    Noisy
We arrived on the Friday to discover we had to camp in the middle of the field as we weren't on hook up therefore we had a great view of other people's tents. Very large groups were permitted on site ensuing for one long noisy night with unruly kids kicking a football at the tent and car. The noise went on until the early hours and then just as we were dropping off someone decided to start banging car doors from about 5.30 am onwards, dogs barking, women cackling. We went out for breakfast as sitting outside getting a football kicked at us didn't appeal. On our return we discovered more tents were joining the group of chavs so we made the decision to pack up. The lady I spoke to about this was apologetic but only gave us a credit note which I gave away because I'd never return. She told me they allow groups at their discretion. I have kids myself and have been away in a group but this was ridiculous. You might as well go shell island at least you know what to expect, probably get more sleep and nicer views at a music festival. There are plenty of lovely sites nearby this isn't one don't be misled by the good reviews like I was unless ya like festival camping.

From the manager...

Sorry about your experience with us, as you can see from our other reviews we are a very well respected campsite, which people enjoy visiting. After asking around the other campers we have had no other complaints regarding anyone. It seems to me you were not happy from the minute you arrived and were asked to pitch in the middle of the field, if you has spent another £3 and booked electric with your tent you would have been around the outside with the electric pitches.

Local attractions

For families, the safe sandy beaches, funfairs and plentiful tourist attractions of Rhyl and Prestatyn - just four miles away - will no doubt be top of the list. The attractive seaside resorts of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay are also within an easy drive.

Fishing fans can try the trout farm ten minutes up the road from Penisar Mynydd Caravan Park, or head into St Asaph to fish the River Elwy; walkers can saunter through a superb selection of scenery, including nearby Offa’s Dyke, or drive to Snowdonia National Park and hike the mountains and lakes; and golfers will also find that this area suits them to a tee, with a huge choice of courses including Caerwys, Meliden, Rhuddlan, Rhyl, Holywell and Prestatyn.

Other top picks for sightseeing include the village of Betws-Y-Coed and the neighbouring Swallow Falls; the imposing remains of Rhuddlan Castle; and seventeenth century Bodrhyddan Hall, where a 3,000-year-old mummy lurks among the armour and period furniture...
