General

  • A serene site with beautiful views of the Clwydian Hills
  • Easy reach of the beaches, heritage and hikes in the area
  • Great on-site facilities, within a short drive of nearby towns

Care for a chilled-out break a quick drive from the coastline and within easy reach of the castles and heritage of north Wales? Settle yourself at Caer Mynydd Caravan Park, a serene site near the hamlet of Saron and with cracking views towards the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the Clwydian Hills.

If you’re planning to stay on site, there’s a play area for the kids to make friends at while you sit back and relax, but Caer Mynydd is also within easy reach of the beaches, heritage and hikes of this part of north Wales, with the Denbigh moors and Llyn Brenig reservoir close to hand and Snowdonia National Park within an hour’s drive.

The essentials are well looked after, with a centrally heated utility building with loos and showers, a private wetroom for disabled guests and a food shop to pick up essentials for the campfire. More provisions are available at nearby Denbigh and Ruthin, and there’s a pub in the village of Cyffylliog three miles away.

Firepits are allowed on site for responsible folk: please dispose of all residue correctly and leave the area clean and tidy.

There was plenty of space for tents. The people were very helpful. We have a young child and was given the disabled key so it was a litle easier for me to wash in the one room.

    Disliked:

Toilets disabled and Normal were a bit too basic. I accept they are used by everyone but they were not clean and toilets were blocked with no locks on all the doors. I found this very off putting as I don't expect out of this world just clean and tended too. The wash house for dishes also had no running hot water so resort to washing at the tent .

The pitched areas for tents were very good.

    Disliked:

The toilets were not regularly cleaned. There was two showers for male and two showers for female. Only one electric shower worked in each one. As the other shower ran of the hot water system and there was no hot running water at all. To wash your dishes you had to fill a bowl with the electric shower!

All of it! The site is on a hill, next to a busy road no gate on the field. The toilets are in the caravan field across the road. This road is national speed limit. Constant tractors up and down and cars at high speed. Ehu is positioned in the middle of the field so cables can be tripped over. We lost our electric during the night because of this. The ehu kept tripping for no reason. No warning that you require a long extension lead either. The facilities were shocking. No hot water in the shower yet the taps burnt me when I washed my hands. Someone had used the shower and there was grass everywhere in the bottom and it was walked through. No squeegee or mop to clean up. There were no locks on 4 out of the 5 toilets and one of the showers had no lock. The kids playground was run down and a joke surrounded by kids from in the caravan park who screamed til late on the Saturday night. The tent field was used as a dog walking area with dogs off the lead. One owner was throwing a ball with the dog off the lead at our tent. There is very poor lighting at the shower blocks and all around the site apart from the main shop building which has a high beam security light. The tap for water is not signposted. We finally had someone confirm we were on site the next morning. The regulars decided to have a party in the hall on the Saturday night there was music and someone had the microphone and was singing until 12am. There was no view unless you walked towards the entrance of the site, even then it was blocked by trees. All in all a rubbish site very disappointed. I very rarely post a review but wouldn't want anyone with young kids to turn up and expect a good site. It isn't.

The open space that the children could run in

    Disliked:

▪️No one even came to greet up or was there when we arrived. We walked around aimlessly trying to figure out where to go or what to do, only to find a little note on the door of a hidden cabin that the static caravan residents had to direct us to.
▪️The shop that was there had barely anything in and was only open for the odd hour, 3 times a day and even then we had to ring the bell a few times and wait for quite a while
▪️ Only 1 shower of the 2 had hot water and the other was freezing
▪️The toilets either had broken flushes or broken locks on the doors
▪️The games room is just a room with chairs that look like they've been stored from an 80's village pub with broken tables etc. No room to move and the pool table had a tiny TINY pool cue with no end on, no black ball, no white ball, a green snooker ball, only 4 yellow balls and the rest were red. Strangest game of pool ever. Other than that, the room wa a dive.
▪️There is a long road that runs between the tent field and the area with the toilets, park and caravans. Cars come zooming down that road so fast so even older kids have to be walked across and can't just play on the park or go to the toilet
▪️ The electric hookup was in the middle of the field only so the kids were constantly having to be careful of wires when playing and this was during a quiet period!
▪️The park was small and whilst it was ok, the swings (2 in a row) would only swing side to side so kept bumping into each other or spin round in circles
    ▪️No wifi
    ▪️Rubbish view

Local attractions

Hike the Denbigh moors and head to Gwylfa Hiraethog, the ruins of an old shooting lodge that’s rumoured to be haunted; less hair-raisingly, the moors also have fishing, canoeing and sailing on the reservoir Llyn Brenig, where there’s a visitor centre, café and info on the local area.

The coniferous Clocaenog Forest is also on the moors and has several clear walks with views to Snowdonia and the Berwyn range, and a walk to the highest point of the forest, The Mast. Clocaenog is one of the areas in Wales to see red squirrels, and an enclosed area in the forest has rare Przewalski wild horses.

Caer Mynydd is 15 miles from the north Wales coastline and the seaside town of Rhyl, with its sandy six-mile stretch to neighbouring Prestatyn. The Sun Centre at Rhyl has adventure pools, surf pools and waterslides, and there’s a SeaQuarium on the seafront with an underwater tunnel, sea lion show and tropical reef zone for curious little squirts. Two other seaside resorts, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay, are within easy driving distance from here.

Golfers will find several courses in the area including courses at Rhyl and Prestatyn, with the closest at Denbigh Golf Club a couple of miles from Caer Mynydd. Prefer to cast off rather than tee off? Take your tackle to Llyn Brenig for fly fishing or to St Asaph’s River Elwy to land trout and Atlantic salmon; Denbighshire’s River Dee is famous for its salmon too.

There are three castles near Caer Mynydd: Denbigh Castle with its triple-towered gatehouse; the thirteenth century Rhuddlan Castle built by Edward I, and Bodelwyddan Castle with maze, formal garden, woodland and World War I practice trenches. Elsewhere for Denbighshire history, there’s Ruthin Gaol with displays on the Victorian prison system, pretending to be a Cistercian monk at Llangollen’s Valle Crucis Abbey or taking the old steam train Llangollen Railway along the River Dee to Carrog; if the kids like steaming about, there’s a miniature railway track around Marine Lake in Rhyl.
