General

  • Nearly-wild camping with extras
  • Bar with its own ale, free wifi, TV room and lounge
  • Free brown trout fishing in the site river

Non-campers who smugly say to you that camping is about roughing it should be pointed towards this site. (Forcibly, if need be).

Glan Ceirw in Denbighshire is ‘nearly wild’ Welsh camping at its very peak (Wales has a lot of peaks) – riverside camping on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, but with the very mod-dest of mod cons for all guests. You’ll even be able to cast off for brown trout – free and with no licence required – in Glan Ceirw’s own river; just bring along your fishing equipment.

Owners Pauline and Martin see no reason why tent campers shouldn't be treated to some homely treats (we agree), so Glan Ceirw counts among its facilities free high speed wifi and a snugly warm bar – with its own exclusive ale – adjoining a games room with pool table and football table.

There’s also a TV room and lounge for weary collapsing in front of the log fire after a day investigating the local action: Glan Ceirw is in a valley location between the towns of Corwen and Betws-y-Coed, with mountain bike trails, cycle routes, peak scaling, forest walking and Bala Lake all nearby.

Amenities including loos, showers and a launderette are maintained to spotless standards, and the grounds are kept immaculate to encourage local wildlife (and small human guests). Glan Ceirw has no food shop on site, but a tasty farmers’ market is nearby where you can pick up heaps of homemade and organic produce. You could even bring a jar of jam back to the non-camping cynic…

Beautiful campsite; the owner was a lovely lady who could not have been more accommodating. We had the loveliest time and the bar in particular was great as was very cosy and gave you opportunity to socialise with other campers. All facilities were clean and accessible and everything you could possibly need was provided. Great value for money and overall a wonderful experience.

    Disliked:

It was quite muddy where we pitched our tent, which was in one of the few spaces left when we arrived. Also could get quite cold being so close to the stream, especially in the mornings, and were on a slight slope with quite a lot of tree roots on the ground beneath us. However we understand that this isn't due to any management faults and that, considering all of the good things about this campsite, it was a small price to pay as it really wasn't that uncomfortable. It's quite a distance to the nearest shops but if you drive not a problem at all.

Lovely, quiet setting beside the river with reasonably level pitches. We stayed over August bank holiday weekend but it was by no means overcrowded and there was still plenty of space for children to play. The river is a great draw for them - paddling and fishing were popular. Toilet block was ok - a little bit of a walk from the camping area and comprised one shower + 2 toilets (gents, not sure what the ladies had). Shower was good with plenty of hot water. Dish-washing area also had ample hot water and coin-operated washing machine and drier. Owner was friendly and helpful and ensured guests had everything they required. Small bar on site is the focal point in the evenings if that's your thing.

    Disliked:

I guess if you have young children / non-swimmers the proximity of the river could be a problem unless carefully supervised. Toilet block could perhaps do with a more frequent clean, although it was by no means dirty. Wi-fi was good near the bar but didn't work by the camping area.

Staff was really friendly and always on hand to help and offer advice, great quiet campsite where everyone is friendly and chats away in the bar area at night which is great after a long days mountain biking in the local area. Would highly recommend staying here my only 2 small complaints would be parking and possibly electric hook ups for tents but apart from that it certainly wont put me off coming back.

Local attractions

Bala Lake, the old village of Betws-y-Coed, Coed Llandegla Forest and Snowdonia National Park are all nearby, providing enough sporty activity, family days out and history and heritage to keep you going for weeks.

Start off among the shops, cafés and the Conwy Valley Railway Museum’s miniature railway at Betws-y-Coed, then take a riverside walk along the River Llugwy and on to the spectacular Swallow Falls via the River Conwy; if you don’t fancy the walk, the Pont-y-Pair Falls are in the centre of the village and have picnic areas overlooking them.

As this is an active area, you’ll find activity centres scattered about within easy driving distance, like the one at Wales’s biggest body of water, Bala Lake, which has a huge range of outdoor options including whitewater rafting, zorbing and canoeing.

On land, horse-riding, quad biking and dry slope skiing are all available, or you could follow in the footsteps of thousands (millions?) and scale some of the peaks of Snowdonia (promise yourself a picnic and a Glan Ceirw ale at the top).

Coed Llandegla Forest in the heart of Snowdonia National Park is where mountain bikers go; it has trails for all abilities, even apprehensive beginners, as well as walking trails for the slower-paced.

Both the Llyn Brenig and Alwen reservoirs are top trails for walking too, and Llyn Brenig’s visitor centre has info on other activities around the reservoir such as sailing, windsurfing and fishing (Llyn Brenig hosts the World Fly Fishing Championships each year).

Archaeologists might also rock out at the Llyn Brenig Archaeological Trail around Brenig’s Bronze Age burial and historical sites: it’s only two and a half miles long but has eight or nine cairns, several medieval dwellings and Maen Cleddau, the Sword’s Stone, where a giant is said to have sliced a large section off a local boulder.

If it’s more heritage (and a rest) you’re after, two vintage steam railways are nearby – one at Bala and one at Llangollen – while in the national park the kids can dig into Welsh mining history with trips to Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Llechwedd Slate Cavern and the National Slate Museum.
