Why visit Conwy?

King of the castles

The imposing ruins of Conwy Castle dominate the town’s skyline, with its eight towers looking out over the River Conwy, the Irish Sea and the peaks of Snowdonia. There’s much to explore at this 13th-century site (including some splendid restored spiral staircases that really make the most of those views), and it’s really worth leaving some time to explore the rest of Conwy town too – especially the circuit of the ancient town walls.

Outdoor adventures

Almost half of Conwy county’s land area is covered by the eastern side of Snowdonia National Park – and that means lots of scope for days out in the fresh air. Head to walking hotspots like Capel Curig or Betws y Coed for a good choice of hiking routes, or set your sights a little higher by planning ascents of Carnedd Llewelyn and Glyder Fawr. Or maybe you’d like to try the unusual activity of inland surfing at Adventure Parc Snowdonia?

Seaside days

The Conwy stretch of the North Wales coast is a great place for a day out, whether you fancy strolling along the Wales Coast Path, taking a paddle on the sandy Conwy Morfa beach or seeking out Michelin-starred food in Colwyn Bay. The elegant Victorian resort town Llandudno is a popular base for visitors too: it’s the kind of place where you can either take a gentle stroll along the longest pier in Wales or take to the waves of West Shore beach for a day of kitesurfing.

Essential Conwy attractions

  • Ride the cable car or the tramway up to the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno for great sea views (then take the toboggan on the way down if you’re feeling brave…)
  • Explore the colourful plant collections at the National Trust’s Bodnant Garden (where dogs are welcome too…)
  • Meet exotic animals from around the world at the Welsh Mountain Zoo – tigers, chimpanzees and penguins all live here
  • Experience the adrenaline rush of the woodland toboggan, the zipwires or the giant swing at ZipWorld Fforest

Unexplored Conwy

Underground exploration

Lots of visitors explore Llandudno’s Great Orme Country Park, wandering around the nature reserve in the company of wild Kashmir goats – but did you know you can explore under the surface as well? The Great Orme Mines date back about 4000 years to the Bronze Age, and the site is now thought to be the largest prehistoric mine discovered anywhere in the world.

Mini house

From a huge space to a tiny one… While you’re in Conwy town it’s very much worth popping into The Smallest House in Great Britain to marvel at the idea of living in such a compact space. Intriguingly, the last resident of this little place (measuring less than two metres wide and three metres tall) was a man who was almost two metres tall…

Secluded Snowdonia

Some of the popular spots (Snowdon itself, for example) can get pretty busy in high season, but there’s plenty of other parts of Snowdonia to explore if you’re after an altogether quieter experience. Moel Siabod is a less-visited peak for keen hikers, and there’s generally space to breathe on the trails around Gwydir Forest Park.
