Pentwyn Dingle Rural Campsite: Space for motorhomes and tents

General

  • Peaceful, simple site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye; canoe hire five minute away
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of two local pubs

Rural, you say? Why yes indeed – it’s a fitting term indeed for Pentwyn Dingle Rural Campsite, a peaceful Powys Site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and at the foot of the Black Mountains. There’s a properly middle-of-the-countryside feel here, with trees all around and a brook running through the site, but it’s also in a handy spot a mere 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye.

As you may guess, this is a fab location for folk looking to check out the stunning scenery nearby: there are plenty of walking and bike routes to follow locally, and the owners also recommend days of canoeing on the River Wye and horse riding in the Black Mountains. Fancy mixing that up with a bit of town time? Brecon, Crickhowell and Talgarth are all nearby, and of course there’s some excellent pottering to be done in the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye.

Back at base, facilities have been kept very minimal – just a drinking water tap and chemical waste disposal point (you’ll need to bring toilet facilities with you, and you’re kindly asked to take all rubbish away with you).

Keeping things simple means more space to focus on the fresh air and enjoy a bit of birdsong. Being a laidback kind of place, dogs are welcome to join you – they’ll probably enjoy a paddle in the brook, as indeed you might at the end of a long walk. Campfires and barbecues are permitted if you’d like an alfresco meal, or you can stroll over to one of two local pubs within a mile of the site.

This was a great stay that we booked last minute.
The site was lovely and well maintained. The site is very basic ie no shower / toilet facilities but this was perfect for what we wanted.
Everyone was courteous of each other and kept the noise to a minimum. And the owners came round to take payment and stopped to chat with us for a while and were super friendly.
The running stream next to site was beautiful and was so relaxing listening to it flowing at night.

    Disliked:

The only thing about the location of the site was that we had our child with us and there were loads of public footpaths near the site but none that were suitable for a toddler and definitely wouldn't have been pushchair friendly either so if anyone is travelling with younger children and wanting to walk we couldn't find anywhere suitable and had to drive elsewhere to walk the dog etc.
Having said that because of the location of the site, there was plenty within easy driving distance so not a total negative.

Amazing views! Lovely field to pitch in.
Spent the evening watching the sunset and gazing at the views of the black mountains close by with gospel pass prominent and pen y fan in the distance. Firepit crackling away and cold beer. What more can you want!
We had a small campervan - would recommend ramps as some slopes (although there were some flat areas) and obviously need to be self sufficient as per the description on pitchup but drinking water taps and chemical disposal points easily accessible. Worth noting there is a good 4G signal.
Some fab walks from the site - nice pub about 1 mile away. Numerous cycle routes from the site. Highly recommend Talgarth nearby (10 mins drive) - lovely little village/town with river to paddle in and fab waterfall walk. Also Hay-On-Wye 15 mins drive always a must visit. Plus the views from gospel pass are sensational.
Site owners couldn't be more helpful and friendly - coming round to collect the fees and providing local tips on walks/pubs.

The Dingle is very secluded and peaceful with a babbling brook running down the length. The facilities are very basic just fresh water and a place to empty the toilet and grey waste. Martin the owner is lovely and came round regularly to make sure everything was ok. He has also added another field higher up with great views of the mountains. I spent two nights in the Dingle and one in the Lodge field. This field has the same facilities but fantastic views. Both sites have slight slopes however I was able to find flatter areas on both. The sites are only a 10 minutes drive from Hay on Wye and there are pubs and a lovely garden centre with farm shop within 5 minutes drive.

Local attractions

The walking possibilities around here are many and varied, ranging from gentle circular walks that stop at the pub for all-important rehydration to uphill clambers at Pen y Fan – the highest peak in south Wales is about a 40-minute drive from the site.

If you fancy a different way to get out and about, check out the local canoe hire place and the activity centre that’s got options for caving, rafting, paddleboarding and other outdoor antics – both places are about five minutes’ drive away. Llangorse Lake (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine pick for a day out whether you’re after walks or watersports.

Time for something less energetic? Perhaps head to Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) to see the castle and poke your nose into all the bookshops, or make a break for Brecon (20 minutes) for a march around the regimental museum. Also within a half-hour drive are pretty Crickhowell and the flower-flanked pathways of Brobury House Gardens.
