General

  • Spacious and peaceful site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye

Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common?

Answer: they’ll all be beaming from ear to ear at Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye.

If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a supremely suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area: thanks to a winning combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms, and a laundry with washing machines, dryers and irons, you can emerge from the hills looking pressed and clean enough for a literary luncheon, or a dapper dinner in town. (If you prefer your dining alfresco, barbecues are allowed on site.)

With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

Good site with clean facilities, friendly staff but pitches sloped24/09/2020

  • Liked:

    - Washing/Toilet Facilities were clean and modern, 3 cubicles containing toilet, shower and basin for men. Presumably similar for women.
    - Helpful, Friendly Staff
    - Hot Showers were not metered
    - Site was clearly very well maintained, pitches attractively mowed.
    - Hay-On-Wye a 10 minute drive away

    Disliked:

    - Car had to be driven onto grass pitch across field. In wet weather this may have proven difficult, although being on a slope natural drainage may render this point void). An area of hardstanding for cars upon entering the camping field would perhaps improve this.
    - Tent pitches were on a slope. Costly to flatten fully, and also more difficult to maintain/mow, but would improve site for tents.

From the manager...

We are grateful for your positive comments and we are sure your review will assist others who are considering booking a pitch with us.

As per numerous previous reviews, the pitches in the Wild Camping field are NOT 100% level. Fortunately we have not had issues with vehicles getting bogged down or stuck in that field in the past. We also "shut it down" as it were from the 1st October each year to ensure that we do not encounter that issue.

Thank you for reviewing your stay with us.

The area had beautiful views and is quite spacious (looked better in real life than in pictures). The staff were friendly and very helpful.
The facilities (showers and toilets) were very clean and were cleaned daily. There was plugs available near the toilets to charge our phones etc. and a freezer to keep our drinks cold. There was also grass protectors to allow us to have a bbq which was great. I highly recommend going there.

    Disliked:

The only thing I would say that was a little inconvenient is that we got mixed information about things like being able to have a fire and being able to pitch more than one tent in one pitch (both turned out to be not allowed). I personally think they should be allowed because it makes the camping experience more enjoyable.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments on views, staff, facilities etc, they are greatly appreciated.

To clarify your "disliked" comments :-
We permit barbeques, if they are raised off the grass (we provide breeze blocks for this purpose). We do NOT permit firepits unless they have a spark guard.
The reason that we do not allow more than one tent on a pitch (as explained whilst you were with us) is for safety reasons, it is a fire regulation that tents should not be pitched within 5 meters of each other.

We want everyone to have the best & most enjoyable experience whilst on our park but, "safety" is of paramount importance to us.

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries.

If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury, 10 minutes' drive away, to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire.

If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Beacons’ highest mountain, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes).

To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping.

Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.

Must see

  • Brecon Mountain Railway (21.7 miles)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (21.7 miles)
  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (21.9 miles)
