Glangwdi Glamping: The view of the stunning Brecon Beacons.

General

  • Small family-friendly site in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons
  • Just off the main A470 road, a five-minute drive from Brecon town
  • Views out across the mountains; pygmy goats to meet at the park

Get to Glangwdi Glamping for bell tent breaks at a fantastic family-run site in a first-rate spot for bumbling around the Brecon Beacons National Park. Days of hiking, alpaca walking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, gorge walking – and pretty much any other activity you're up for in this part of Powys – are a doddle to organise while on a hol here.

Taking on pursuits of a more leisurely sort is also an option at this scenic site, either by simply sitting down and admiring the views out across south Wales’ most sizeable mountain range or by wandering over to meet the pygmy goats, chickens and ducks at the farm.

Barbecues with a backdrop of the Brecon Beacons are of course a brilliant way to arrange dins on site (firepits are available and there’s wood to buy). But if you're not in the mood to cook, let someone else do the work by ordering meals at one of the pubs, coffee shops or restaurants up the road in Brecon (five minutes’ drive). You could also wangle a takeaway delivered straight to your pitch...

Work up an appetite for eats with a walk around the Brecon Beacons, whether a gentle hike in the woods or while getting stuck into scaling Pen-y-Fan (20 minutes), the area’s highest peak.

This is a back to basics type of park but it does have portaloos, showers and a washing-up area.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The super fab tent, the hot water bottles, comfy bed, squeaky clean loos, fancy shower, the fire pit, the table under cover and the table in the sun, the vintage tractor for the kids to sit on, the view, ease of access to Brecon and Pen-y-fan, the lack of WIFI was a selling point as got the kids away from screens, we were so impressed with our fantastic hosts, Jo and Andrew, and LOVED the goats and dogs.

We enjoyed the animals that were in the pens. They were a great way to get out when there was nothing to do. Everyone enjoyed the goats there and the children especially enjoyed feeding and petting them. The owners of the campsite were really polite and gave us everything we needed. The tents were also really nice and pretty. The beds were really comfortable and the hot water bottles were perfect for the cold nights at the site. There was everything we needed such as gas for cooking, wood for the fire, cooking equipment and much more and it made it so much easier to do things

Our stay was sensational. From the moment we arrived it was a 5 star experience. The attention to detail was second to none. The tent was fantastically comfortable and and cosy. The kitchen facilities had absolutely everything you can possibly need.

Both our children loved helping with the goats, chickens and ducks. Jo and Andrew are the most welcoming and thoughtful hosts you could ask for.

The toilets, shower and washroom are beautifully finished and spotlessly clean.

There are so many little touches that I won’t go through so they come as a surprise.

Everything, the hosts Jo and Andrew had considered everything. It looked amazing, was super comfortable and clean and the friendly atmosphere they’ve created is perfect for a family escape. They were around camp at all times bringing essentials, handy tips for days out and getting the most out of the local area and had bags of patience with my 2 daughters who fell in love with the goats. They allowed the girls in with them each morning to get them out of the pens for the day, teaching them about the animals. It really made there trip. We will certainly be back again as soon as we can!

We had an amazing week at Glangwdi Glamping which is definitely underselling itself with the "back to basics" description. It's a small, family friendly site in an idyllic setting (with views of Pen y Fan in the day time and clear skies for stargazing at night) which is an easy walk into Brecon town.

The tents are cosy inside and have their own private kitchen areas outside, with all equipment provided. Ours even had a wood burning stove but we didn't need it because of the glorious weather. The shared toilets, shower and washroom are all lovely and very clean.

Jo and Andrew are fantastic hosts and were brilliant with the children, taking them in to feed the pygmy goats every morning and letting them back in for cuddles with the goats throughout the day! (It was the pygmy goats that convinced us to book and they proved to be a real hit with our 7 year old, who was rarely seen without a baby goat in her arms!)

We almost didn't want to review because we don't want everyone knowing about this gem of a site! We'll definitely be back soon.

    Disliked:

We should have read the info more carefully and seen that there wasn't electricity for charging devices (although Jo and Andrew were happy to charge things for us in their house). Next time we'll remember to bring more charging packs!

The tent was super comfortable and stylish. Jo and Andrew are extremely welcoming and helpful. The wash and shower room are very luxurious for a camp site. It's a perfect location for lots of amazing walks as well as the showcaves. We had a wonderful surprise when we went walking through woods near the site to see some waterfalls. We had a really fantastic time and definitely want to return as there is so much more to explore in the area.

    Disliked:

Our children were a little bit disappointed that there wasn't any electric or WiFi, however Jo and Andrew were happy to charge phones in their farmhouse.

Local attractions

Horse-riding sorts might like to saddle up at the nearby stables (10 minutes' drive), while mountain bikers can satiate their need for speed on the top trails at BikePark Wales (half an hour).

And the outdoorsy antics don't end there… Brecon is something of a hub for such things with activity centres around town for rafting, canoeing, high ropes courses and gorge scrambling adventures. All sound too exhausting? Take a more leisurely ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway (half an hour) before heading home via the Penderyn whisky distillery (30 minutes) and sampling some locally made tipples.

Break out of the Beacons for trips to some of the area's other attractions: Llandovery Castle is half an hour away, as is the literary town of Hay-on-Wye, a settlement lined with bookshops. A little further north, but well worth a trip are the lakes of the Elan Valley and the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader; both are around 50 minutes drive.

Must see

  • Brecon Mountain Railway (10.0 miles)
