Why visit Drymen?

A handy location

Just 15 minutes’ drive from the A82 edging the west side of Loch Lomond, the pretty village of Drymen is handy as an overnight stopover if you’re heading north and taking the spectacular drive through Glencoe or heading to the lovely seaside town of Oban on the west coast (from where you take the ferry across to the Isle of Mull). The village is directly on the scenic A811 too, so you can be exploring Stirling Castle with around 40 minutes’ drive.

Hiking and cycling central

Drymen sits on several long-distance walking and biking trails, including the West Highland Way, Rob Roy Way and the National Cycle Network Route 7. An overnight stop en route is highly recommended, or you can base yourself in a campsite near the village and hike/bike shorter sections of the trails. There’s plenty of parking for drivers, and Milngavie and Balloch train stations are a short taxi ride away. You’ll never be short of a meal or a drink either, as pubs and restaurants dot the village.

Activities hub

If you’re not planning to fill your days with walking or cycling, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in and around Drymen. Some of the local outdoor activities on offer include golf courses, riding schools, watersports centres, fishing on lochs and rivers, adventure courses and treetop rope challenges. If you're really not into such activities, there’s a shopping mall (great for any rainy days), and kid-friendly ideas include an aquarium and raptor displays, as well as boat cruises on Loch Lomond.

Exploring around Drymen

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park

Whether you’d like to climb Ben More (a challenging munro – the local name for a hill over 3,000 feet), explore the glens on horseback or spend a morning fishing in one of 22 pristine lochs, it’s all possible in this national park. You can also visit towns including bustling Callander, with its range of gift shops and cafés, and St Fillans sitting prettily on the side of Loch Earn. Admire the tumbling Falls of Dochart in Killin and take a traditional steamboat cruise across peaceful Loch Katrine.

Day trip to Glasgow

Fancy a day of culture in the big city? The superb Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (home to work by local boy Charles Rennie Mackintosh) and The Burrell Collection of priceless decorative arts are big hitters for anyone with even a vague interest in art. Learn about steam trains, skateboards and vintage cars at the avant-garde Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel, or spend the day on the interactive exhibits at Glasgow Science Centre. All this is under an hour’s drive from Drymen.

SEALIFE Loch Lomond Aquarium

Book ahead to discover the secrets of the ocean in themed zones with colourful shoals of fish darting through coral. Star of the show here is April the turtle, rescued from The Maldives, and you can get up close to black-tipped reef sharks and stately manta rays in the Ocean Tunnel, or stroke starfish in the interactive Rockpool. Make a full day of it by taking a cruise across the loch or going window-shopping in the neighbouring Loch Lomond Shores shopping mall.
