General

  • Small rural site six miles from the A1 on the Scotland-England border
  • 15 minutes' drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Royal Border Bridge
  • Half an hour from Lindisfarne Natural Reserve and Holy Island

Making a break for the Borders? What a fine idea. And an equally excellent plan is a stopover at Hunrig Caravan Park in the quiet farming area of West Fishwick.

This is a mighty convenient point for a stopover for those wending their way north or south on the A1 – a six-mile detour from the main road and a few minutes from the Scottish/English border. Those with a bit more time to stick around will find plenty to fill their days with among the area’s rural attractions, beaches and towns (handsome Berwick-upon-Tweed, England’s most northerly town, is a 15-minute drive away).

Facilities here have been kept to a minimum to give guests a properly peaceful rural retreat, but there's access to drinking water, hook-ups and a chemical toilet disposal area. Well-behaved pets on leads are welcome to join you on your jaunt and there’s also plenty of space to light up a barbie for an alfresco sausage sizzle under the stars.

    - Charlotte is very friendly
    - Rural location so feels very calm and relaxed
    - Generous grass pitches
    - Close to Berwick for decent supermarkets and petrol
    - Easily accessible
    - Bathroom is lovely
    - Even though it's next to a road, traffic noise is so minimal that you'd never know

    Disliked:

Shower and only toilet are in the same room so did need to manage when I went to the bathroom if I saw someone heading for it. But this is a very minor dislike as I really enjoying the overall experience.

From the manager...

Thank you for being considerate and managing timing, it is a pain I admit but I felt providing a toilet vs none at all were a better option so we could cater to those in tents and camper vans without those facilities. I don't want you to feel rushed but I really appreciate the consideration for others that you showed. Plus you kept the sunshine here so extra bonus points for you two in my book. See you soon anytime again.

Clean well spaced area with only a handfull of pitches so it’s not over crowded. Very nice wash/shower room with free standing bath. The lady we delt with on site (Charlotte) is fantastic and extremely helpful as she is happy to spend a lot of her time and resources to help you have a very pleasant stay (if help is required).
Superb site and one of the few that I intend on revisiting in the future.

Fantastic site! Loved the bath, facilities very clean and host was lovely. Liked the trees and bushes in between pitches too gave a bit of privacy.

    Disliked:

Only one bathroom for all pitches, would be better if there was a toilet/shower in a separate room from the bath because we did feel a bit rushed in the bath.

From the manager...

Thank you for being considerate with the bath. I dont want you to feel rushed but I really appreciate the consideration for others you showed. I usually suggest off peak hours and quieter A.Ms for a fully relaxed unspoiled bath. We have a regular after midnight guest who swears by her late night/early morning soak followed by a lazy morning in her caravan.
Give me a buzz if you are up this way again and bring your bubbles to properly relax next tine around.

This is a small and peaceful site that has all you need for a relaxing break, without all of the unnecessary additions like onsite entertainment and shops. We were given a choice of pitches and there was plenty of space for the children to run around and explore. The site is close to Berwick, the coast and lots of castles for children to visit. The fact there is a bath as well as a shower was also a huge plus as a parent of young children.

Unfortunately, our trip was cut short after our daughter fell climbing a tree and ended up at hospital, but the site owner was brilliant. She checked in on us at the infirmary and the following morning when she noticed we hadn’t returned, offering to store our caravan safely if we couldn’t get back to collect it.

If you want to be looked after by genuinely friendly and helpful site owners, Hunrig is definitely a place to visit. We will be back again!

    Disliked:

The traditional UK rain is always a risk, but pack some wellies and jump in the puddles :)

From the manager...

Aww thank you so much for the review,
My holiday is ensuring everyone who visits enjoys theirs. It is guests like you that make all the toilet checks, mopping, mowing and trimming to determine what is a weed vs a flower worthwhile. Your family is the very example of what it means to unwind, relax and enjoy lifes simple pure times in an unclear world.
Until your next journey, enjoy your summer.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to enjoy your holiday with us. Having a site that accepts tents but also the facilities for guests who use the facilities and not their own is an important balance. I make sure that the one toilet and shower that we do have is kept spotless and fresh and I try to keep the site under-filled so guests can have less wait times.

Local attractions

Berwick-upon-Tweed, a 15-minute drive away, is a fab place for a wander: follow in the footsteps of LS Lowry on the Lowry Trail through the town, perhaps, or complete a circuit of the Elizabethan walls for excellent views of the vast Royal Border Bridge.

There are some fine beaches around these parts too – scooch over to Spittal, just outside Berwick, for sandcastle building, strolls on the Victorian promenade and aquatic antics for kids in the splash park. Or wander a bit further south to the Lindisfarne Natural Reserve, half an hour away, to cross the causeway to Holy Island (keep those peepers peeled for seals and wildfowl as you wander).

Also worth a visit nearby are the 18th-century Paxton House (10 minutes away), Andy Howey’s Birds of Prey (20 minutes) and the Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre (25 minutes), as well as the galleries and museums in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
