General

  • Small rural site six miles from the A1 on the Scotland-England border
  • 15 minutes' drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Royal Border Bridge
  • Half an hour from Lindisfarne Natural Reserve and Holy Island

Making a break for the Borders? What a fine idea. And an equally excellent plan is a stopover at Hunrig Caravan Park in the quiet farming area of West Fishwick.

This is a mighty convenient point for a stopover for those wending their way north or south on the A1 – a six-mile detour from the main road and a few minutes from the Scottish/English border. Those with a bit more time to stick around though will find plenty to fill their days with among the area’s rural attractions, beaches and towns (handsome Berwick-upon-Tweed, England’s most northerly town, is a 15-minute drive away).

Facilities here have been kept to a minimum to give guests a properly peaceful rural retreat: but guests have access to drinking water, hook-ups and a chemical toilet disposal area. Well-behaved pets on leads are welcome to join you on your jaunt and there’s also plenty of space to light up a barbie for an alfresco sausage sizzle under the stars.

The owner was very welcoming, taking us round the site and showing us all the facilities. The site is quiet and the natural planting of the borders and beds attracts lots of birds and butterflies. Watching the swifts flying in the evening and feeding their young was a real treat.
The pitches are a good size and all have power and water. The site was quiet, though as we visited towards the end of the season the site was not at full occupancy and we could choose our own pitch.
The owner is new to the site and has plans for improvements that will only benefit the site and make a great site into an excellent one; most importantly for me she aims to keep the site wildlife friendly. This is a site I will definitely visit again.

Thanks for understanding and having appreciation of being guests amongst nature. We don't want to be a site where you get stressing rules and regulations. We aim to let ADULTS be adults and children to respect others around them. Nature and the peaceful calming holiday going back to basics is exactly our goal.

We were greeted by the owner, shown a variety of pitches, so we could choose the one we liked the most. Friendly, helpful, local information.
On setting up we realised that the electric lead had been left at home. This was no problem to the owner's husband, straight round with a lead for us to borrow for our stay.
We had a pitch with drainage, electricity, water all the comforts of home, terrific.

The site is situated in a delightful rural area, no noise at all, very peaceful. Access to the surrounding countryside and towns is easy. So many places to visit and lots of local walks.

No Wifi but this was not a problem.

We would recommend this site for those wanting to enjoy the beautiful Borders. The nearby village of Paxton has an excellent pub/restaurant, friendly service and wonderful food.

    Disliked:

Only one shower/bathroom & toilet. This though did not affect us as we were totally self-contained.

From the manager...

Glad you were able to get away from it all but still get a chance to access the Scottish Borders with us. Hope to see you again.. Don't forget the lead or the eggs :)

The size of the campsite was ideal and the owner didn't try and squeeze to many people on to the site. Only thing that let it down was that there was only 1 toilet so there was sometimes a bit of a queue forming.

Directions

If you follow satnav/GPS to the site postcode it will take you a couple of miles away. Please use the directions below to arrive at the site the easiest way. You can call the number in your booking confirmation email if you need help getting in.

From Newcastle:
Follow the A1 north to Berwick-upon-weed. After crossing the River Tweed, take the first left onto the B6461 signposted Kelso/Paxton House. Follow this road for approximately six miles. DO NOT TURN OFF THE B6461. The site is on the righthand side after the bend just past the West Fishwick community sign. If coming from Kelso follow the B6461 and continue past Lazy Day Cottages and the site will be on the left at the end of the straight road.

From the south:
Follow the A1 north. After crossing the River Tweed on the A1 Berwick bypass take the next exit left the B6461 signposted Kelso/ Paxton House. Stay on this road past Paxton House at the crossroads. You will reach a junction signposted for Horncliffe and the Chain Bridge Honey Farm. Bear right here on the main Kelso road and stay on this road for another mile. You will see the tall grain silo at West Fishwick Farm on your left; Hunrig is just around the corner.

From the North West or Edinburgh area:
Follow the A1 south to Berwick-upon-Tweed for about 55 miles. At the Berwick /Morrison’s Roundabout take the A1 towards Alnwick/Newcastle. After approx a mile on the A1 Berwick bypass take the next exit right the B6461, signposted to Kelso/ Paxton House. Stay on this road past Paxton House at the crossroads. You will reach a junction signposted for Horncliffe and the Chain Bridge Honey Farm; bear right here on the main Kelso road and just around the corner you will see the 'Hunrig Caravan Park 1 mile on right' sign. Stay on this road until you see the tall grain silo at West Fishwick Farm on your left. Hunrig is just around the corner.

From the west: Kelso and the Central Borders:
Follow the signs out of Kelso for Swinton and Berwick on the B6461. Pass through the villages of Ednam and Eccles, cross over the main A697 road at Orange Lane, and continue on the B6461 signposted Berwick. Pass through the village of Leitholm and once you reach the village of Swinton, enter the village and immediately turn right up the village main street on the A6112. At the bottom end of the village, bear left on the B6461 for Berwick again. After 1 mile you will pass Swinton Quarry on your left and a 'Hunrig Caravan Park 3.5 miles on left' sign. After 3 miles you will come around a corner at the entrance to Winfield Farm; the site is at the end of this, just before the corner on the lefthand side.

Local attractions

Berwick-upon-Tweed a 15-minute drive away is a fab place for a wander: follow in the footsteps of LS Lowry on the Lowry Trail through the town, perhaps, or complete a circuit of the Elizabethan walls for excellent views of the vast Royal Border Bridge.

There are some fine beaches around these parts too – scooch over to Spittal, just outside Berwick, for sandcastle building, strolls on the Victorian promenade and aquatic antics for kids in the splash park. Or wander a bit further south to the Lindisfarne Natural Reserve half an hour away to cross the causeway to Holy Island (keep those peepers peeled for seals and wildfowl as you wander).

Also worth a visit nearby are the 18th-century Paxton House (10 minutes away), Andy Howey’s Birds of Prey (20 minutes) and the Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre (25 minutes), as well as the galleries and museums in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
