General

  • 50-acre site in the grounds of a Georgian mansion
  • Spectacular views towards the Vendlaw Hills
  • Bar and restaurant, TV room and food shop

Peeps – and pooches – you should come to Peebles. As it's a sure bet you'll find something to feast your peepholes on round these parts, whether that’s the 50 miles of mountain bike trails at Glentress Forest, piles of lovely wares in town – Peebles was named Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland – or the artsy attractions and several festivals.

Nearby River Tweed is internationally famous for salmon fishing too: the Peebles town motto and crest even has three salmon a-leaping up the water. All in all, rather fab.

Right on the edge of Peebles to also feast your eyes on is Rosetta Holiday Park too, an attentively manicured family and dog-friendly site set over 50 acres with spectacular views towards the Vendlaw Hills.

The park is in grounds surrounding a Georgian mansion and includes an old stable block converted into the Hayloft Bar and Restaurant which dishes up home-cooked meals (during the busy season only) and free evening entertainment including karaoke (weekends only). The stables building also has a TV room with a few games to keep the family occupied.

Outdoors, there’s a playground for the kids to swing, slide and climb around; additional facilities include a food shop, a launderette and a handy café in the bar area.

(Please note that food is no longer served from the end of September and that the bar is closed on weekdays. Entertainment is minimal outside high season.)

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Please note that after 29/09 the Hayloft bar and restaurant is open on weekends only and does not serve food. The entertainment programme after this time is also minimal.

Very disappointing 19/09/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Carol B. Confirmed

  • Liked:

the fact that I was given my choice of pitch but was concerned about the reasoning, "its so water logged and we've not done anything about it, so just take whatever pitch you like - if we give you one you don't like, you'll just come back and moan"

    Disliked:

The lady in reception (not sure of her name but it clearly wasn't Sue, who I had talked to on the phone before arrival and was VERY helpful) had no interest in guests:
    - couldn't tell where the local shop was
    - did know how long it took to walk into town
    - didn't have a map of the site as "don't think anyone has bothered to print any"
    - did know information about facilities on site ie opening times of bar, restaurant
    - we went on Sunday night for a drink in the pub only to find it closed with no opening times noted anywhere

    Disliked:

Hard standing was a gravel pit, not really what I would describe as a hard standing

Warned on arrival the bottom block of showers were not very strong due to water pressure and to use the ones at the top, quite a walk to the ones at the top

The ladies on reception were very helpful. The pitch was well maintained and quiet.
The ladies toilets were warm and clean. The sites location to Peebles and Glentress Trail centre cannot be bettered. We also travelled to Edinburgh for the Tattoo and we parked at PremiAir and took the tram in which was very easy & very cheap.

    Disliked:

Whilst the shower was warm and clean, the water pressure was poor. The toilet blocks could do with updating but they did not impact on my stay.
Most sites have WI FI included these days or at least the option to purchase.
We could not pick up any satellite reception. The price seemed a tad expensive compared to others in terms of facilities but location can't be beaten for trail centres and Peebles.

Local attractions

One of the many highlights of the Scottish Borders is that, while the region is rightly popular with savvy holidaymakers, it remains off the mass tourist track so you can gleefully pursue your pastimes without areas becoming overcrowded.

Fishing is one of the most popular pursuits in the area is because of Peebles’s proximity to the River Tweed, on the top scale of salmon fishing rivers in the world. Go out on your own with your rod license or bag a trip/course from one of the many local angling centres nearby; the Tweed and its tributaries yield wild trout and grayling too. Elsewhere in the area, anglers have acres of lochs for coarse fishing and the Berwickshire coast nearby for sea angling – and views – off Eyemouth, Burmouth and St Abbs.

The mountain bike trails of Glentress Forest three miles away is another big draw for active visitors – the Tweed Bike Festival is held here in May and June and Glentress/Innerleithen are part of the world famous 7stanes mountain biking trails. The award-winning centre at Glentress has trails of all grades and a most modern visitor centre with bike wash, bike hire and a bike shop.

The Tweed Love Bike Festival is held at Peebles in early summer, but if you miss it/aren’t a mountain biker, several other festivals cover several other tastes such as arts, jazz, food (nom), Highlands Games, the Rugby Sevens and the traditional week-long Beltane Festival.

Dramatic highlights like shows at the Eastgate can be had at any time of the year, as can sampling fresh local produce in the town’s hotels and restaurants (nom again), park and river walks by the Tweed and the prerequisite till-ringing at the Old Town and School Brae.

As well as Peebles, the Borders has plenty of other characterful towns to seek out such as Selkirk, Jedburgh, Galashiels and the Borders’s biggest town Hawick; those looking for even brighter lights can make their way to Edinburgh, just 20 miles away.

Must see

  • Royal Scottish Academy (19.7 miles)
