General

  • 50-acre site in the grounds of a Georgian mansion
  • Spectacular views towards the Vendlaw Hills
  • Bar and restaurant, TV room and food shop

Peeps – and pooches – you should come to Peebles. As it's a sure bet you'll find something to feast your peepholes on round these parts, whether that’s the 50 miles of mountain bike trails at Glentress Forest, piles of lovely wares in town – Peebles was named Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland – or the artsy attractions and several festivals.

Nearby River Tweed is internationally famous for salmon fishing too: the Peebles town motto and crest even has three salmon a-leaping up the water. All in all, rather fab.

Right on the edge of Peebles to also feast your eyes on is Rosetta Holiday Park too, an attentively manicured family and dog-friendly site set over 50 acres with spectacular views towards the Vendlaw Hills.

The park is in grounds surrounding a Georgian mansion and includes an old stable block converted into the Hayloft Bar and Restaurant which dishes up home-cooked meals (during the busy season only) and free evening entertainment including karaoke (weekends only). The stables building also has a TV room with a few games to keep the family occupied.

Outdoors, there’s a playground for the kids to swing, slide and climb around; additional facilities include a food shop, a launderette and a handy café in the bar area.

(Please note that food is no longer served from the end of September and that the bar is closed on weekdays. Entertainment is minimal outside high season.)

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Please note that after 29/09 the Hayloft bar and restaurant is open on weekends only and does not serve food. The entertainment programme after this time is also minimal.

Location was lovely, services were easy to use and campsite was peaceful. Lovely place to stay hassle free with no major draw backs.

    Disliked:

Not serving food on a Sunday was irritating as we arrived tired and would have happily paid for the restaurant.

It's such a shame as this place has real potential but needs a good clean and some level tent pitches.

    Disliked:

Tent pitch in a slope. Shower/toilet block smelly out dated and no toilet paper in any of the toilets, my husband said the men's we're also disgusting. Dogs barking through most of the night.

friendly staff who worked hard to keep the site clean 20/08/2017

  • Liked:

Had a pebble road in the tent field so cars didn't churn up the field and make it muddy as in previous camp sites.
Liked the bar and court yard, there is also a wildlife field which is like s maze, they children enjoyed exploring there

    Disliked:

Booked an electric pitch but there was not much space between the tents, the tent field hardly had any tents on it but they allocated pitches and rather than spacing the tents out they were all very close together

Well drained site with all the facilites you need. 18/08/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom zoe d. Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass trailer tent or tent pitch

  • Liked:

The tent are is well laid out with marked pitches. Pitches drained well. Bar, games/tv room and small restaurant on site which gave somewhere warm and dry to go to on an evening if necessary. Large toilet block with showers. Indoor dishwashing facilities clothes dryers and washers available. Also a freezer on site.

    Disliked:

The site is a little dated and could do with a bit of updating. For example 2 of the ladies toilets were out of order and one of the others I went in had a large crack on the cistern.

Tent pitch was in very wet grass, more in mud.

Local attractions

One of the many highlights of the Scottish Borders is that, while the region is rightly popular with savvy holidaymakers, it remains off the mass tourist track so you can gleefully pursue your pastimes without areas becoming overcrowded.

Fishing is one of the most popular pursuits in the area is because of Peebles’s proximity to the River Tweed, on the top scale of salmon fishing rivers in the world. Go out on your own with your rod license or bag a trip/course from one of the many local angling centres nearby; the Tweed and its tributaries yield wild trout and grayling too. Elsewhere in the area, anglers have acres of lochs for coarse fishing and the Berwickshire coast nearby for sea angling – and views – off Eyemouth, Burmouth and St Abbs.

The mountain bike trails of Glentress Forest three miles away is another big draw for active visitors – the Tweed Bike Festival is held here in May and June and Glentress/Innerleithen are part of the world famous 7stanes mountain biking trails. The award-winning centre at Glentress has trails of all grades and a most modern visitor centre with bike wash, bike hire and a bike shop.

The Tweed Love Bike Festival is held at Peebles in early summer, but if you miss it/aren’t a mountain biker, several other festivals cover several other tastes such as arts, jazz, food (nom), Highlands Games, the Rugby Sevens and the traditional week-long Beltane Festival.

Dramatic highlights like shows at the Eastgate can be had at any time of the year, as can sampling fresh local produce in the town’s hotels and restaurants (nom again), park and river walks by the Tweed and the prerequisite till-ringing at the Old Town and School Brae.

As well as Peebles, the Borders has plenty of other characterful towns to seek out such as Selkirk, Jedburgh, Galashiels and the Borders’s biggest town Hawick; those looking for even brighter lights can make their way to Edinburgh, just 20 miles away.

Must see
