General

  • Riverbank glamping with mountain views
  • Fish for salmon and trout on private stretch of the river
  • Heated amenities block with free hot showers

Might you want some luxury glamping on a riverbank location in pretty Perthshire, with striking mountain views and a scenic section of bank from which to cast off for salmon and trout? Go on, you’ve Earned it.

Find this – and a fair bit more – at on the banks of the River Earn, ten minutes’ walk from Perthshire’s market town of Crieff and listed as a spectacular scenery site for its mountain and river views. You can pick up a permit at reception to fish on Braidhaugh’s own part of the Earn, or use the park as a base for touring Perthshire and other top Scottish sites. Gentle canters on horseback or foot are nearby too: walks of all levels are all around the Crieff area and horse riding is available at Braidhaugh’s sister site in the area, Loch Tay Highland Lodges.

Facilities on site include a heated and clean amenities block with free power showers, toilets, a wash area, shaver points and hand and hair dryers. Facilities for disabled guests are in the main shower block.

Clothes can be washed, dried and pristinely pressed in the launderette (get the other half to do it, you’re on holiday), and the games room with table football, dartboard, air hockey and TV should keep the kids occupied on rainy days.

Top up essentials and toiletries at the onsite shop, or head into Crieff for more substantial supplies, restaurants, pubs and hotels.

Pitch space was more than adequate. Quiet site Well maintained site overall though some pitches appeared to be still under refurbishment.

    Clean toilet block.

    Disliked:

No power points in ladies toilets for hairdryer and straighteners etc, i.e. away from the sinks

Shower cubicles a bit tight, shower curtain sticks to you, could do with the curved shower curtain pole set up, and no bench to sit on too put your socks and shoes on.

Near town and shops if needed, facilities and site were well maintained.

    Disliked:

The site manageress, in my opinion, had a very poor grip on things, we arrived around 12 noon to find the site was closed 12 - 1 pm, no trouble, we were a bit early, we sat and spoke to another couple who arrived 5 mins after us, and looked about, it was then we discovered they had been allocated P50 through the site they booked with. Having looked at the layout in the fully serviced pitches we were always going to ask to be allocated something which suited our operational requirements. At around 1pm ish, a woman with 2 dogs walked past the 4 of us and proceeded out of our view, 5 mins later she came and addressed us by saying "we were backing up the site and causing an obstruction at the entrance", EH!!, at no time when she passed us, did she say she was a site official, or invite us in to complete our bookings, the 4 of us looked at each other and lots of head scratching took place, relationships went downhill from that point. Our caravan is 6.3 meters long, and when we explained the pitch allocated to us (P27), was too small for our c/van, porch awning and car (Discovery 4), she replied all pitches were 28ft in depth, not the case, most are less than 24ft, and some only wide enough for caravan and awning. She then told us to look at pitch seasonal 5 and we did, but we also looked at 4 more pitches 10,11,34 & 36 which would have suited our requirements, when we asked to occupy the pitches mentioned, she told us the site was full, and more or less "take it or leave it". The couple behind us were allocated pitch P50 as previously stated, which they were unhappy about also, and guess what, they were re allocated in pitch P34 Hmmm!. Logistics is not her strong points as the majority of the larger pitches were occupied by small to medium size motor homes (Vivaro's and VW Transporters etc) with loooaaaads of room, while myself and 2 other customers were situated in the smallest pitches, having the largest caravans, and no room to park our cars, these were left obstructing the sites one way system, and we had too move from time to time to allow access for others to set up. When booking it asks all your details Caravan, Motor home, Car and all dimensions, "A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME FILLING IN", as no attention is paid to the details supplied. Further more the site wasn't full, there were a number of pitches vacant, including some of the ones we asked for. I would suggest if booking this site, you call the site and make it abundantly clear what your requirements are, otherwise you may be disappointed. All it takes is for some attention to detail, and that thing some people can't do these days "Communicate by means of speaking to each other". It's a shame, as the site could be so much better, we stayed at another of Largo Leisure sites at "Crail" in Fife 2 weeks ago, and it was tremendous, site was superb and the people who run it were so helpful and friendly, foolishly we assumed Crieff would be the same, not he case. Sorry but won't be back, after all it's our money were spending, and a LITTLE help or thought could have made a BIG difference.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, points taken on board
- Your booking was allocated via Pitch up who have 6 pitches to choose from 25-30.Your caravan 6.3 metres (20.66ft) fitted on your allocated pitch and normally if the customer isn't happy we try our best to relocate them.As this was a very busy weekend all we could offer was an empty seasonal pitch (Pitch 5).Pitches 10 and 11 are workers pitches and 34 and 36 were allocated to other customers at the time of your arrival.pitch 34 cancelled so we able to offer this to the other couple. Please accept our apologies

Clean well kept site. It was a very pleasant site with good access to the river for fishing.

    Disliked:

However the turn into the site via the toilet block is very narrow and the overhanging roof hit our caravan. Luckily it just knocked the rubber out of the ridge, but it could have been much worse. We spoke to others and they all said that they found the entry very dodgy due to the overhanging part of the roof. You cannot swing round away from the toilet block as the touring area starts there and you are in danger of hitting one of the caravans on site.
There is no sign showing the site entry is immediately as you turn into the road. The sign is hidden by bushes and needs to be shifted so you can see it as you turn into the road.

Very clean and tidy sire. Toilet blocks small but clean. Lovely river by site and nice playground.

    Disliked:

The waste outlet on the fully serviced pitche's are a fair distance from most caravan outlets. An extension might be needed for it and the water hook up.

Directions

From Perth (17 miles)
Drive straight through Crieff main street then turn left on to the A822 (Stirling). At the bottom of the hill you will cross a bridge over the River Earn. Turn right immediately after the bridge and take the first right to enter Braidhaugh.

From Stirling (22 miles)
Follow the A822, passing through the village of Muthill. Soon after entering Crieff you will see the visitor centre on your left and 100 yards after this, turn left before crossing the bridge over the River Earn. Braidhaugh is the first entry on the right.

From Oban (77 miles)
Travel through Lochearnhead and Comrie until you reach Crieff. Once in the town turn right at the sign for the A822 (Stirling) and follow the A822 until you reach the bridge over the River Earn. Turn right at the end of the bridge; Braidhaugh is the first entry on the right.

Local attractions

Ah, Perthshire…you could spend weeks here and still have to go back for more. More fishing, great golfing, red squirrels, country parks and historical highlights including Scotland’s oldest library and Iron Age hill forts – all here in a heady mixture along with the essentials of whisky trailing and big city shopping.

Nearby Crieff was a wild west style cattle rustling town in times of yore; it’s tamer these days but thrillseekers can check out the Crieff Hydro Outdoor Activity Centre to whirl around an aerial adventure course on tightropes, ziplines and cargo nets, or get sporty at some of the dozens of indoor and outdoor pursuits here including golf, riding, swimming and football. The centre has a reputation for being particularly sprog-friendly, as does the popular MacRosty Park on the west side of Crieff at the bottom of Minlab Street: there’s a good-sized children’s playground here for all ages, beside a café for tired parents.

From MacRosty, set off along the River Earn to see the oak, beech and sweet chestnut trees on Lady Mary’s Walk, one of Perthshire’s most popular strolls for its wealth of wildlife and autumnal blaze. Another top tree-based walk – Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country, after all – is around the oldest managed forest in Scotland, Craigvinean, or the Atholl Estate and its wild tree garden with possibly the biggest Douglas fir you’ll ever see.

Perthshire also has plentiful options for day trips: tracking down the real Macbeth to Dunsinane Hill, Bonnie Prince Charlie to Castle Menzies and graffiti artist Rabbie Burns to the Scotland’s oldest inn at Kenmore; skiing and snowsporting at Glenshee, and indoor karting and soft play at Noahs Ark in Perth.

For rainy days, the sports centre local to Braidhaugh has an indoor pool, and nearby Auchingarrich Wildlife Park is good in wet weather because of its covered walkways and indoor activities. Or drive to Perth and Dunfermline for that shopping recommended above: till-ringing always seems more fun when it’s tipping it down.
