Why visit Blair Atholl?

Highlands sightseeing

Thanks to its handy setting just off the scenic main A9 road between Perth and Thurso, a stay at Blair Atholl makes it easy to explore the central Highlands. The pretty lochside town of Pitlochry, with its famous theatre and salmon ladder on the dam, is less than 15 minutes’ drive away. Several local whisky distilleries are open for guided tours, and an upmarket shopping village sells Highland tweeds and cashmere – all within half an hour’s drive.

Outdoor adventure

Blair Atholl makes a fantastic base for anyone wanting to spend time outside in bracing Highland air. You have the choice of walking, cycling and climbing in the UK’s largest national park and in Perthshire forest, or white-water rafting, abseiling and kayaking on the River Tummel. There’s year-round sporting activity at Cairngorm Mountain and Glenshee, where skiers have fabulous views in winter, and families can enjoy tubing rides and zipwires in the summer months.

Culture and castles

Some of the oldest dwellings in the UK can be found around Loch Tay – at least 18 Stone Age 'crannogs' have been preserved in the cold waters of the loch; to experience life in these ancient edifices, head for the Scottish Crannog Centre, where frequent events and workshops are held. Other important cultural attractions around Blair Atholl include the impressive Scottish Baronial-style Blair Castle – just outside the village – and Castle Menzies, a stark 16th-century fortified mansion; both are open for guided tours.

Exploring around Blair Atholl

Cairngorms National Park

Hike or cycle to peaceful lochs and through extensive forest, or discover the moorland and mountains aboard a Strathspey Steam Railway train. Nature-lovers can (hopefully) get up close to wildlife at Loch Garten Nature Centre – look out for the nesting ospreys or spot red squirrels among the trees – and feed the free-ranging reindeer herd at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. Skiers visit in winter to ski at Aviemore (look for Blair Atholl campsites that open all year), or you can go tubing in summer.

Queen’s View

The star attraction in Tay Forest Park – which also has a sculpture trail and easy family strolls around Faskally – Queen’s View is accessed from a popular visitor centre with displays on local wildlife, a gift shop and a café. From there, you can walk through Allean Forest (alive with colour in autumn) to the famous vantage point via a well-maintained footpath, for views over Loch Tummel to Rannoch Moor and the triangular peak of Schiehallion.

Dalwhinnie Distillery

Book ahead to take a tour of Scotland’s highest distillery, located 1,164 feet above sea level and just off the A9 half an hour’s drive from Blair Atholl. Built in 1897, it produces an iconic whisky with flavours of heather, honey and citrus. Guided tours take in the copper distillation vats and cooperage and finish up with tastings of various malts paired with handmade chocolates – a takeaway option is offered for drivers.
