View over Evie

General

  • Peaceful, family-run park with views over Eynhallow Sound
  • A 15-minute walk to Evie Sands beach and 25 minutes’ drive to Kirkwall
  • Bistro serving pizza from 'the UK's most northerly woodfired oven'

For beaches down the road and a bistro on site, you’d best be making your way to Eviedale Campsite on Scotland’s Orkney Islands. A peaceful place sheltered from the winds that whistle across this archipelago, it’s in a prime position on the western Mainland looking out towards the scenic Eynhallow Sound and over to the Isle of Rousey.

Keep eyes on the ocean to spot seals swimming and whales wallowing, then get back to that bistro: sitting in the site’s old croft, it has cosy vibes and home cooking including sourdough pizza and freshly baked bread made in what the owners reckon is the UK’s most northerly woodfired oven. If for some (inexplicable) reason you don't fancy that, drop by for an artisan coffee and a warm up beside the log fire. (Please note that booking is essential.)

Picnic provisions (post-pizza, of course)? A small village shop is down the road and a supermarket is in Dounby 10 minutes’ drive away.

The small toilet block has separate facilities for men and women, including a shower and toilet; there's also a charging point for phones and hairdryer use (small contribution to electric requested). The site has limited basic facilities so please bear this in mind when booking. Wifi is only accessible at the back of the bistro and does not extend to the camping areas.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

First experience of staying in a bell tent as we loved it. Very spacious and had useful basic equipment for food preparation / bbq’ing. Delicious pizzas and relaxed vibe in the restaurant. Friendly hosts.

    Disliked:

Not much phone reception or WiFi unfortunately but on the plus side that added to the solace :)
Also, even though it was midsummer, it got quite chilly at night so bring extra blankets.

From the manager...

I would like to point out that we are a very basic rural site, but we are fortunate to have fibre broadband, the best on the island, which is excellent which can be fully accessed at the back of our bistro, near the router. As you would expect this does not extend to our camping fields which have no electricity or router nearby.
We are on a remote island and sometimes the broadband is affected by forces outside our contol, normally when there is heavy rain or wind, so to give the wifi such a low score is unrealistic and not our experience or any previous guests.

Local attractions

Suitably fed, warmed and caffeinated, hightail it over to the golden sands and paddlable shallow waters of Aikerness Bay less than a 10-minute drive before strolling to the Broch of Gurness Iron Age settlement on its eastern side.

If cycling’s your sport, Evie’s right on the Northlink route so you can ride towards Barony Mill and the Brough of Birsay (50 minutes) to see the puffins puttering about; more twitcher times can be had within a five-minute drive at the RSPB’s Birsay Moors, where winged critters like hen harriers, short-eared owls and arctic skuas are regularly seen.

The main Orkney town of Kirkwall’s 25 minutes’ drive from the site for Viking themed venturing to the 12th-century Norse cathedral of St Magnus. If you’re hot on history, drop by the Bishop’s and Earl’s palaces as well as the Orkney Museum or simply use the area as a starting point for ferries to Aberdeen and the Shetland Islands.

Stromness town is also 25 minutes away by car; navigate your way here for the Pier Arts Centre and the Ring of Brodgar neolithic stone circle just outside the centre.

Other local attractions of a historical sort in the area if you're still raring for more include the ancient Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn 15 minutes away (dating as far back as 2,000 BC) and the Skara Brae Prehistoric Village (20 minutes’ drive).
