Want to sample the sights and sounds of Edinburgh but board with big city hotel prices? The ‘Kocoons’ at Harvieston Huts should fit the bill. Only ten miles from Edinburgh but on a secluded country mansion estate, these private, secure and weatherproof wooden tents have all the ambience of a traditional camping holiday but come with lockable doors, toasty insulation and solar powered LED lights. And there are a couple of Jacuzzis on site too: OK, that might not fall under the umbrella of ‘traditional camping’, but we don’t think anyone will quibble…

Already set up when you arrive so no need to grapple with your tent, the huts at Harvieston will keep you snug and dry against any amount of elements battering down outside, with the added advantage of not hearing canvas flapping and keeping you awake in heavy wind. Well, watching the sunset from the Jacuzzi is probably quite tiring, after all, so you do need your beauty sleep. There’s plenty of headroom inside each Kocoon, and the interior is so thick and padded that you might be tempted to try and bounce off it (probably not a good idea).

All Kocoons come with single bunks and have a window for ventilation. Bring all your normal camping gear along with you – except, of course, the tent…

From Edinburgh city centre, follow signs for the bypass. Once you have reached Sheriffhall roundabout take the exit to the A7 south and follow it for four miles through Newtongrange until you see a sign on the right for Kirkhill Mansion at a white gatehouse. Then follow the track down to the camping pods - kocoons.

Local attractions

The lights and sights of Edinburgh, the UK’s second most-visited city, are only a short drive away; there are far too many to list here, but a few must-sees include Edinburgh Castle, the National Museum of Scotland and the Edinburgh Childhood Museum, described as ‘possibly the noisiest museum in the world’. Whether that’s a good thing or not probably depends on your age; if’s it a ‘not’, soothe your frazzled nerves with a shopping trip on Princes Street or a side trip to sandy Silverknowes Beach.

Even closer to your wooden home is gastropub The Sun Inn, five minutes away from Harvieston Huts and winner of Scottish Gastropub of the Year 2011. For days out nearby, the Gore Glen Woodland Park is half a mile away and the family-friendly National Mining Museum Scotland and Lady Victoria Colliery within a mile and a half for pantomimes, parties and overnight ghost hunting. You can also go ghostbusting at the fifteenth century Borthwick Castle, said to have lingering spirits wandering its Red Room, or just tuck into a banquet at its medieval Great Hall restaurant – ghosts not guaranteed.

In the surrounding countryside, there’s golfing at three nearby clubs – Vogrie Country Park, Broomieknowe and Newbattle – or going a-wandering in the Roslin Glen and along the River North Esk; this river and woodland walk was a favourite of Dorothy Wordsworth and takes in the village of Roslin, setting of the Battle of Roslin in 1303. Roslin also has the fifteenth century Rosslyn Chapel, associated with the Knights of Templar and the legend of the Holy Grail, and the setting for part of the novel and film of The Da Vinci Code.

As well as Borthwick, castle connoisseurs will find many in Midlothian and Lothian, including Crichton, Dalhousie, Craigmillar and Hawthornden.
