General

  • Twenty minutes' drive or 40-minute bus journey to Princes Street
  • Next door to Royal Musselburgh Golf Club
  • Local bus to Edinburgh every ten minutes

Don't dither about whether to focus on the accommodation or the location of Drummohr Caravan Park in lovely Lothian, for both are equally topping.

The placement of the park is pretty perfect too, with Edinburgh in one direction and the hikes of the East Lothian countryside in the other – the Edinburgh to Prestonpans section of the 134-mile path John Muir's Way passes within five minutes of the site. More? The sands and shoreline of the coast are a few miles away and there's even a golf club (the Royal Musselburgh) right next door…

Like the accommodation and grounds, the Drummohr amenities are modern, clean and well maintained by William and his team: two tiled shower and toilet blocks, each with chemical disposal and a fully-equipped laundry room with metered laundry facilities. Drinking water points and waste disposal are both close to the spacious pitches.

One final little touch? The playground right in the centre of the site, to occupy the offspring while parents get prunelike in the hot tubs.

Electric points too far away to reach our tent even with a long cable. Toilet blocks need refurbishment.

The campsite is very easy to find and the staff were very welcoming on arrival. Our tent patch was a good size, enough to fit our four man tent, car and table. The facilities were clean and well looked after. The campsite is very close to a bus stop, which is handy for getting into the city centre.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the weather wasn't on our side.

Guter Platz mit ordentlichen Anlagen 06/08/2017

Reviewer's country: Germany Bernd J. Confirmed

  • Liked:

    Gut gepflegter Zeltplatz.
    Ordentliche, gut ausgestattete Sanitäreinrichtungen.
    Netter Kinderspielplatz.
    Nettes, hilfreiches Personal.
Viele nützliche Dinge im Zeltplatz-Shop erhältlich.

    Disliked:

Local attractions

The local bus to Edinburgh runs every ten minutes during the day, every 20 minutes in the evenings, and every hour at night; the journey takes about 40 minutes, and if you decide to drive instead, you should be at Princes Street in about 20 minutes.

You could be there for yonks if you considered all the things to see and do in excellent Edinburgh, but if you're only spending one or two days there, recommended options are Edinburgh Castle (but of course), Holyrood Palace, the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Zoo: climb Corstorphine Hill where the zoo is for first-class views of the city.

Elsewhere, Drummohr's location makes it easy to get to all types of days out around coast, countryside or Scotland's historic houses and stately homes. Very close to home, the Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum has free entry and is a few minutes' walk from the park.

Other recommended trips nearby include Tantallon Castle on its headland overlooking the Firth of Forth, trailing nature at the John Muir Country Park or the Lammermuir Hills, an afternoon among the gardens at Tynninghame House, or taking a boat ride around Bass Rock to see the massive gannet colony (a massive number, not massive birds).

At nearby Dunbar, boat trips are available around its historic harbour, as well as sea angling, boat angling and diving in the nearby waters. The Dunbar harbour kittiwakes are fairly famous: there are about 60 breeding pairs here.

If the kittiwakes and the Bass Rock boat ride get you pondering more about the winged life of the area, the Scottish Seabird Centre is a little bit back along the coast from Dunbar at North Berwick.

Must see

  • Palace of Holyroodhouse (6.4 miles)
  • Our Dynamic Earth (6.5 miles)
  • The Royal Yacht Britannia (6.9 miles)
