General

  • Quiet campsite five miles from Edinburgh Airport
  • Shopping locally at Livingston Designer Outlet
  • Next to a country park and the Union Canal

East Calder is calling – and how easily accessible it all is. The county's Linwater Caravan Park is within a five-mile drive from Edinburgh Airport (nip up for the weekend, we say), and is next to the trunk roads of the M8 and M9 – we also say stop over here on your way to and fro north or south.

But you'd also be well placed to stay a bit longer. Linwater's in a countryside location, right next to Almondell and Calderwood Country Park and the Union Canal (we say towpath strolls) and is also a short drive from the Pentland Hills Regional Park. The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena is only a mile away.

All at Linwater is ably run by Katie and Alaistair, who've added a toilet block including a disabled loo, showers, a dishwashing area, laundry facilities and waste disposal for tourers and motorhomes.

The facilities...very basic site but shower/toilets and laundry room are immaculate. Everything was very clean and smelt fresh. Lovely hot water from a proper shower. Pitches are level and a good size.

    Disliked:

The roads leading to site are awful.

From the manager...

Hi Grae_a

Thank you for taking the time to review the site and for your feedback.

We have recently been contacted by Edinburgh city council and advised that the road into us will be getting re-surfaced towards the end of the summer. I agree that this is a much needed improvement and had been in liaison with both our council and our local MSP about this for some time. We are immensely greatful to all reviewers who mention this because is has helped our case for prioritizing this repair with the local authorities.

With regards to the wifi I am sorry that you were unable to use it to it's full potential. We don't have fibre yet so it can be slow if lots of people are using it and/or trying to stream music/films. Again, we have been advised that a fibre cable is being installed into the area soon as part of the Rural Scotland upgrades so we plan to improve connectivity for customers in line with this.

Thank you again for your review. It is always good to get real feedback from people who stay on the site.
Best Wishes
Katie

Well run site with attentive staff. Very clean facilities and the short cut grass is great for us tenters. Very handy for getting the tram into Edinburgh and not so far from
The Helix and the Falkirk Wheel

    Disliked:

Airport close by so rather noisy early and late but that’s the price you pay for being so close to amenities
Noisy three families roaring about in the Saturday until after 10pm in an otherwise very quiet and peaceful place.
Loads of show dogs with their owners, camping near to the Scottish Kennel Club show but they were kept under good control by their responsible owners

Local attractions

Linwater Caravan Park's locale means you're well set for both countryside and city days, or to break up a journey on your way north or south.

Around the area, a mile away in a disused quarry is the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, with the biggest indoor climbing wall in the world (well worth tackling for the boasting rights gained for afterwards, say we). The towpath walks of the Union Canal are nearby and the shows and exhibitions of the Royal Highland Showground are within four miles.

You can also easily drive to the Kelpies, the biggest horsey structures on the planet, and to the Falkirk Wheel, the boat lift connecting the Union and the Forth and Clyde canals.

Must see

  • Edinburgh Zoo (6.7 miles)
  • Linlithgow Palace (7.9 miles)
  • Royal Scottish Academy (9.1 miles)
