  • Quiet rural location 11 miles from Glasgow
  • A 10-minute drive from Auchinstarry marina and Antonine Wall walks
  • Bird of prey centre and café on site
There are no streetlights to blur your vision at rural Blairlinn Campsite near Luggiebank village in Lanarkshire – all you'll see overhead of an evening is the light of the moon and the stars. But it's only about 11 miles from the city lights of Glasgow, so you're not far from drinks on Sauchiehall Street should you fancy them… You might hoot with pleasure on finding a bird of prey centre and a play area at the site too, along with the Cabin Café where breakfast and drinks can be bought. (Please note that the café is only open when the bird of prey centre is.) To pick up supplies for lunch, dinner and evening tipples, a couple of supermarkets are within four miles. You're also within a 10-minute drive of Auchinstarry marina, where there is a waterside pub plus cycle routes, walks to the Antonine Wall and watersports for all ages. The site is also within a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive of a railway station with regular services to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Peace and quiet, friendly owners, access to the railway station for routes to Glasgow, Edinburgh and more, and a nice rural view. As the site is owned by World of Wings visitor attraction we were even treated to a bird of prey display right by our pitch.

Disliked: I was hoping for starlit skies, but the weather never obliged.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Was fantastic! Really friendly and breakfasts were perfect. The walk to the toilets at night was a big adventure (bring something to pee in at night if you don't want the 2 minute walk, or a good torch), pitch was flat, and plenty of room. Birds of prey being right next door is an added bonus. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Wonderful family run gem. Peaceful and well cared for park up and pitches. Lovely and flat and it’s looks like they are cultivating a young native woodland around. Immaculate toilets with a good accesible option. Lovely cafe, definitely worth trying their excellent breakfast options and visiting world of wings displays. I’m always cautious of paying to see animals in case they are not well treated for my entertainment but world of wings is full of a very wide array of birds housed happily to their needs including successful breeding programmes for some threatened species. The birds have such free reign in fact that on the day of our visit a particularly large one just took to the thermals and went off for a jolly. Far from panicking the staff scrambled off with their telemetry to track it and wait for it to come down. Full marks go to the newest employee who got left to entertain the large crowd who had been coming to watch the flying display. She held together a sizeable crowd through bird handling, keeping everyone calmly at a safe distance that didn’t stress the birds but patiently letting everyone have a wee handle while keeping up a stream of bird facts. For more than an hour with 2 different birds. She just rolled with it. Fortunately Gandalf was home in time for tea and I walked past his enclosure on the way out I noted that it said as his interesting fact that this species if known for liking to fly high! We had a lovely experience here and excellent communication beforehand. It’s a lovely central location and very easy to get to from the main roads

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: A scenic view and peace and quiet made for a lovely stay. We chose Blairlinn for its limited facilities as we prefer a low key venue to a shiny, busy one.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: The view from the field. Its proximity to Glasgow.

Disliked: This isn’t a campsite, it’s a spare field/overflow car park on a small ex-industrial site. The loos you use are part of World of Wings, so a short walk from the field, and there’s no drinking water tap, washing up area or bin.

Local attractions

Campsites by cities are surely splendid, and Blairlinn campsite is well placed for Scotland's two biggest, Glasgow and Edinburgh: Glasgow is around 11 miles away and Edinburgh about 25. Go to the former for those Sauchiehall Street pints after a day among the museums and galleries; the latter for many a festival and other capital highlights like Edinburgh Castle. Staying within countryside locale, guests at Blairlinn could canter around the local riding stables or the country walks near the Luggie Burn or cast off for whoppers at the 150 pegs and seven waters of Magicroft Coarse Fishery. Nearby Palacerigg Golf Course is open to visitors. Pottering around Palacerigg Country Park is a fine family day out among a rare breeds collection, nature trails, play park and treetop walkway. Cumbernauld is the nearest town to Blairlinn: it's one of Scotland's new towns so alas doesn't come with the comely old castles or churches you might expect/hope for, but is much recommended anyway for shopping and an eve at Cumbernauld Theatre. (As a new town, a look at it is also recommended for town planning/architectural geeks – and if you've ever seen Gregory's Girl you might recognise the locale.) The nearby Antonine Wall was the most northernly frontier barrier of the Roman Empire (no, this wasn't Hadrian's Wall) and runs right across Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to Firth of Forth; walk or cycle its local route or stop off at a few of the many museums. You could also take on a day trip to Falkirk, about 20 miles from Glasgow, for more shopping and to see equine sculptures the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel, connecting the Forth and Clyde and the Union canals.
