General

  • Spectacular scenery next to the River Blackwater
  • Hill walking in the Munro mountains just minutes away
  • Reiki, reflexology, massage and workshops available

River and reflexology, mountains and massage, whiskey and waterfalls, red kites and fishing and a remote location with easy access to roads for urban day trips… some places really do have pretty much everything.

Or almost – you won’t find a clubhouse, pizza joint or noisy entertainment at family-run Riverside Caravan Park, but if you’re camping in the Scottish Highlands we’re going to assume you’re erring on the quieter side of peaceful. And that you’re up for some stunning Scottish scenery – have a look at the site pics to see of what we speak.

Riverside is next to the River Blackwater, flowing into the River Contin, a popular pull for salmon and trout anglers from Scotland and further afield. (Fishing is available too on the Blackwater from the campsite – just be sure to catch and release.)

The Munro mountains rise minutes from the park for hill walking and 'Munro bagging' (climbing all the Munro mountains in one fell swoop/tired-legged trip), and mountain bike trails start just over the road from Riverside if you prefer to go at a more breakneck speed.

Also nearby are the Rogie Falls rushing downhill a couple of miles away, and we’d bank on almost every guest seeing a red kite overhead when staying at Riverside – if not, viewing points and nature trails are not far away at the RSPB’s Tollie Red Kites reserve.

To sort supplies, the well-stocked and reasonably priced village shop and post office is right at the site entrance and fresh bread and pastries are sold on site most mornings during busy seasons. A garage/petrol station and hotel with bar and restaurant are about a mile away.

Catch a bus just outside the Riverside Caravan Park entrance to Contin village and on to Inverness for exploring; if you do want to drive, Riverside Caravan Park has good access to the main roads for Inverness and Loch Ness, and is centrally based for other Scottish attractions like the malt whiskey trail, Aviemore, Ullapool and the Isle of Skye.

And you’ll probably need a rest now. Which is why we say some places really do have pretty much everything: there’s an on-site holistic therapist at Riverside, offering reiki, reflexology, holistic massage, Karuna and metamorphic technique, and occasional workshops in drumming, meditation and more. It's a hard life.

Beautiful setting. Shop close by where everything Wes available. There was a wood directly opposite the camp which was great to take our dog.

    Disliked:

Did get rather crowded and no set pitches. The day before we left we had two camper vans park either side of the tent very close and we had no privacy. Shame as otherwise a great site

Simple site, but everything worked and helpful manager Jason lives on site in his funky camper van. Friendly chap, fixed problems quickly, and very diligent. Village store just on the entrance drive, so bit more in it than your usual camp shop. Showers are electric, so no hot water shortages. Good location bearing in mind how far away everything generally is in the Highlands.

Regular flyovers by Red Kites a bonus.

    Disliked:

Although we had plenty of space, site description suggested unlimited which I think is stretching the facts if you intend to have lots of pup tents/shelters etc.

Lovely location by the river. We were on an overnight stop to Ullapool so didn't spend much time there but explored a little of the woodland walk on the other side of the road. Very quiet. Toilet blocks adequate and kept clean. Friendly welcome and well organised bookings.

    Loved location by river
    Grass only, no gravel
Small site which attracted tents and small campervans only, and consequently lots of social interaction between users
Jason the warden, very welcoming, caring and informative
    Camp fire hub
    Facilities basic but perfectly adequate
Very relaxed, no dictatorial notices Essential ones were polite and pleasant.
Good opportunities for walking and cycling direct from campsite
Shop at entrance very well stocked
    No midges!
    I will be back!
On a bus route to Inverness, Ullapool and Dingwall

    Disliked:

Maybe some control where vigorous ball games should be played. It got a bit scary we 3 teenage boys playing for a place in the World cup!

From the manager...

Thanks for your review , midges seem to be staying away this year !

Normally we would ask anyone to play their ball games over on the football field that is next to us , so apologies if nobody took care of that.

Thanks
Martyn

    Electric points all huddled together
    Uneven ground

From the manager...

Thanks for your review.

Normally there is no issue with electric hook-up points as most people have cables that are at least 30 metres in length , this allows for good separation of pitches ( we do not have defined pitches as such ).

The ground is pretty flat in actual fact but there are obviously some uneven patches , again with good cable length this is not a problem , it should be possible to place appropriately . It is not something anyone has reported before to be honest.

Thanks
Martyn

We loved this campsite. Jason met us when we arrived and was very welcoming and friendly. We got to choose our pitch. Lovely quiet site with clean facilities. Shop excellent and froze my freezer block for me at no charge. River running along bottom of field adds to the ambience. Excellent price and would definitely recommend this site.
    Excellent walks in the area.

Thanks for such a positive review and we have given your feedback to Jason also.

Directions

By car (from Inverness)
Take the A9 from Inverness over the Kessock bridge, passing the ICT football stadium. You will reach a roundabout after about 6 miles: take the second exit onto the A835. Follow this road until you reach the village of Contin. Continue through the village until you see the village shop on the left-hand side and also the signs for our campsite. Turn left into the shop car park and continue past the shop to the right-hand side and into the campsite area.

Local attractions

If you’ve any time left over after whiskey trailing, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, wildlife watching or being massaged (really, it’s a hard life), there’s still a load to do around Riverside and the Scottish Highlands.

Strathpeffer, Riverside’s nearest town, is well worth a look for its somewhat gorgeous golf course and the toys/exhibits of the Highland Museum of Childhood.

Walk from the west end of Strathpeffer along the forest track to the hill of Cnoc Mor via the Pictish hill fort of Knock Farril, or drive a few miles from the town to visit Castle Leod originally a Pictish fort and now seat of the Mackenzie clan.

A 24-hour mountain bike challenge starts each January from Strathpeffer too (yes, probably the one you saw on the news while you sat on the sofa polishing off the Christmas mince pies).

And if you’re Loch Ness monster spotting on a day trip, pause for a few hours to Urquhart Castle on the loch’s shores, a medieval fortress and one of the biggest and most visited castles in Scotland.

Must see

  • Black Isle Wildlife and Country Park (12.4 miles)
  • Jacobite Cruises (14.5 miles)
  • Culloden Visitor Centre (14.8 miles)
